GenevieveParticipant
Ever since 3B, I viewed Rumple’s character through as someone struggling with PTSD – I unfortunately have some experience with people who suffer from it, and I often compare him to men and women who come back from war missing pieces of themselves, and they and their loved ones suffer for it. I think being resurrected, followed by watching Bae die, followed by a year of having his will completely taken from him broke Rumple in a way that Belle willfully refused to see. Is she to blame for his destructive behavior? No. Does she bear some responsibility for enabling it, and allowing things to pop right back to “normal”after a series of very traumatic events? I think so. I think she wanted that perfect “happily ever after” so badly that she didn’t consider what was the best thing for Rumple.
I’m veering off into headcannon here – I also think Rumple blames Belle in a way for Bae’s death, and that could explain his unconscious sabotaging of the relationship. I could see Rumple thinking that if she had stayed away when he asked her to leave in the EF, or shortly after the curse was broken, Bae might still be alive. Was it her fault? No. We know that she tried to prevent Bae from going through with it, but if Rumple can’t blame Belle, that would mean it was Bae’s fault, and I don’t think that’s a thought he’s capable of handling.

GenevieveParticipantSo, here’s my hail-mary theory:
Hyde made Rumple take the serum when he was under control of the dagger, and we’ve been seeing the duplicate running around being all terrible and macking on the Evil Queen. The other half of rumple is locked away somewhere (maybe with his old haircut to easier differentiate the two) and this will be dramatically revealed that Evil Rumple is the ‘changeling.’
This happened on Days of Our Lives. Multiple times. With the same character. Which I think makes it even more plausible that we would see it here.
GenevieveParticipantReposting a theory from the other thread:
I actually have a far-fetched theory that the shears have to be used willingly – i.e. you can only use them to cut away your Sav-estiny, which is why Jafar gave them to Aladdin, instead of, you know, just waiting for him to fall asleep.
I also have a suspicion that Rumple’s self-loathing is strong enough that he believes Belle and the baby would be better off without him, but that he also knows he would never have the strength to cut their ties himself. So, I think that Rumple’s entertaining the Evil Queen’s attentions are an indirect way to force the issue, since Belle would be mad enough to possibly want to sever all ties to Rumple.
I also noticed, re-watching “A Bitter Draught” that that moment of weirdness between the EQ and Rumple was after the EQ had run the extra through with a sword, wiped her blade clean, and proceeded to dab at herself with the blood of someone she just murdered….if you’re still with me, I think that Rumple’s “interest” was more in line with him realizing the EQ was getting to the point where she would be angry enough to cast the dark curse. I’d also say that’s about 70% analysis, 30% wishful thinking.
GenevieveParticipantIt’s amazing Belle isn’t more fed up with the fact that every time someone discovers something unsavory about Rumple, their first thought is “Hide from Belle and blackmail Rumple!”
I actually have a far-fetched theory that the shears have to be used willingly – i.e. you can only use them to cut away your Sav-estiny, which is why Jafar gave them to Aladdin, instead of, you know, just waiting for him to fall asleep. So Belle would have to want to cut away her destiny, and I think that if she discovered this “romance,” she would be pretty motivated to do so.
I also have a suspicion that Rumple’s self-loathing is strong enough that he believes Belle and the baby would be better off without him, but that he also knows he would never have the strength to cut their ties himself, thus setting this up.
I very much miss Rumple being the smartest guy in the room. It is possible that there was a deleted scene where they couldn’t get his brain back after Zelena needed it for her spell, and they wound up splitting Charming’s so they could each have half instead?
GenevieveParticipantActually, have we seen the Evil Queen actually kill anyone onscreen yet? She heavily implied that she killed the dragon but didn’t say it outright, and then she also implied she killed the oracle, but again, didn’t say it outright.
Is there something about the doppelgangers being unable to lie or kill? Did we see Hyde actually kill anyone either?
