Grace HeatherParticipant
I think that Rumple will ultimately be redeemed and learn to be better in S5, but I hate the idea of him waking up a completely new person with a completely blank slate, thus getting the easy way out, essentially not even be the same character, and most importantly not have to struggle to learn anything. That defeats the whole purpose of true redemption. I think that Rumple should initially relapse because it’s the only way that I can see him undergoing genuine character development, and finally learning to accept and take total responsibility for all of the horrible decisions that he’s made, not just because of the curse’s influence, but because of his own selfish cowardice, insecurities, and magic-addiction. That’s the only sincere way that I could start to see him gradually changing by learning to make the braver right decisions more often. I feel that Rumple getting caught in the act of trying to kill Emma to take the curse back before he could go through with it by someone like Belle or Henry would be a perfect way to finally stir up that wake up call of self-awareness in Rumple. Without being able to use the dark curse’s influence as an excuse anymore, he’ll begin to realize the truth about himself, and learn to be braver. We definitely know that Rumple is capable of being strong and brave enough to make the choice if he really makes a genuine effort by really fighting is own cowardice and darkness from his big sacrifice for Henry, Bae’s son, in season 3A. Even if it wasn’t exactly 100% selfless, considering the fact that it was for the sake of his own family, doing that took a lot of courage, and was a momentarily big character progression for Rumple before everything went to pieces for Rumple after his resurrection, Bae’s death, and Zelena controlling him in season 3B. Since then, Rumple really has turned into a true beast this season, regressing back even further from his starting point back in S1 and S2. Even back then, I didn’t really even consider Rumple/Gold a true villain, just a cowardly, selfish, broken, clever, dark, mysterious, magic-addicted, and mischievous imp of a man, who liked to make deals and stir up trouble for fun, personal benefit, occasional revenge, and to ultimately help him get another step closer to finding his son. He didn’t really progress in those seasons, but he was still pretty consistent and had limits. It’s about time the curse was broken for the sake of Rumple’s ultimate character development and redemption, but it will feel like a major sellout and disappointment if Rumple just wakes up magically purified and instantly transformed into a better person. Regina wasn’t, she earned redemption. True redemption for character development should be totally earned through the character’s own, gradual, and gretly struggled for efforts to change for the better before it can earn them happiness, especially for a character like Rumple. He doesn’t have to be a hero, I’d feel disappointed if he really became one, actually, but I’m getting tired of him being the villain, and he should progress more in a similar way that he was initially struggling and progressing to do good and redeem himself in the Peter Pan/Neverland arc, except not getting killed this time around.
[adrotate group="5"]Grace HeatherParticipantI still want Rumbelle back together! No, they aren’t the kind of couple that I would ever support realistically, but I think that Rumple can still be redeemed. However, this is his absolute last chance. I think that in the last few episodes he’s finally started to realize that he can’t have it all, doesn’t believe that Belle loves him anymore, and just wants the author to rewrite his fate so that he can preserve his humanity. I think there is going to be a major twist, and Isaac/the author is going to end up being the true antagonist working against both the heroes and the villains or maybe by working with Zelena. Honestly, if they kill off Rumple Storybrooke will just get way too normal and boring. He’s the only one connected to everything with a long enough history to keep things going on this show.
Grace HeatherParticipantbecome the man he was before the Dark One curse.
How do you mean that? Do you mean that Rumple would lose the curse, lose all of his memories of ever being the Dark One, and just become the old and weak spinner again? Or Rumple would get the curse broken by Belle, keep his memories, and just be a regular person again with studied magic ability, like Regina, or gain light magic? I feel like he would still be capbable of using magic without the curse. He taught Cora, Regina, and Zelena how to use it, so Rumple must have studied it. He might even be able to tap in to light magic like Regina did without the dark curse.
Grace HeatherParticipantI agree but A and E do have a history of introducing magic McGuffins that fix all the things. The plot doesn’t warrant it, but that wouldn’t stop A and E from introducing some sort of fix-it-all at the 11th hour that not only restores Rumple’s heart but also turns him back into the Rumple we all knew from before.
I hope that’s right, or Belle saves him somehow. If this show does another season, and Rumple’s dead I don’t think that I’d be able to watch anymore. Who else is going to make sure that things are never normal and always interesting in Storybrooke?
Grace HeatherParticipant*waves* Hey everyone. So yeah,I’ve said this many times when this convo of RumBelle comes up: This is Beauty and The Beast we are talking. Have A&E ever broken up an official fairytale/disney coupling? I dont think they have and I dont think they will personally. Personally, I think Rumbelle at this point should just..yeah. Its gotten to the point where I am hoping for Rumps death and Belle moving on (not with Will. Maybe not with ANYONE. But still.) Anyway, I think we’ve come too far to see RumBelle eventually settling back in at home together. In my opinion, its death. Maybe Rump lives and Belle dies. Either way, this will not end well for the Rumbellers.
Come on, you’re sinking my ship!
Grace HeatherParticipantSo it looks like for everyone it’s about 50/50 when it comes to is this going to be the end of Rumbelle…
Grace HeatherParticipantI don’t think I’d mind as much if it was Killian to go. He’s hot, and I’d miss him on the show, but he doesn’t contribute half as much to the storyline as Rumple.
Grace HeatherParticipantPlus, Swanfire was never an official couple, Rumbelle is.
SwanFire were an official couple in the past, how else would Henry have been born?
I know that they were a couple in love in the past and had Henry. My point was that when they met up again in the show, it seemed more like Neal was interested in Emma romantically, while Emma (though she never stopped loving him), was more interested in Neal as a good friend.
Grace HeatherParticipantThe thing with RUmple’s heart won’t kill him though, at least not whilst he’s in Storybrooke or a land of magic he can access. His heart going completely black would mean he’d be unable to feel love which he likens to a kind of death rather than it being actual death.
True. Maybe if he does go all dark, Belle can bring him back.
The only thing that bothers me are those promo pics of Emma holding the dagger in the air in 4×21 and 4×22. I might be wrong, but I’m pretty sure Rumple’s name was still The inscription on it.
Grace HeatherParticipantFrom what I’ve read, A&E said that we should have hope for Rumbelle. Maybe, he won’t die, and it won’t be over. I’m hoping they do a Beauty and the Beast sort of thing where Rumple almost dies before Belle breaks the curse.
Adam said the same thing about Neal and Emma, but that was before Neal died. And Neal ‘died’ in S2 only to be brought back in S3a just to be killed off in S3b in the worst, most rushed manner. So, let that be a caution about these writers. Buzz words like “hope” and “redemption” are almost devoid of any real meaning. What happened to Swanfire could easily happen to Rumbelle — and may have already.
I really hope not. Besides, Swanfire was never really together when they reunited. Yeah, they loved each other, and were good friends, but Emma was kind of iffy about their relationship, bouncing back between Neal and Hook. Plus, Swanfire was never an official couple, Rumbelle is.
