LOST had clues, anagrams and easter eggs that actually made a difference in understanding the plot/storyline- the creators intended for people to dig deeper and figure them out. OUAT has that, too, for those who choose to dig deeper, ‘analyze’ the clues and theorize. The difference is, OUAT can stand on it’s own, as well, for those who just want to watch and be entertained. Not catching the nods/clues- won’t make it hard to follow, as was the case with LOST. As far as genre’s, K&H have repeatedly said it’s about ‘stories’. Here’s an excerpt from a recent interview comparing OUAT to LOST:
Question: Okay, I’ll bite — what’s the big Lost-esque twist coming up on Once Upon a Time involving Mary Margaret and Emma?
Ausiello: Remember how Lost would forever find new angles from which to tell a story? And you know how Once already uses flashbacks to the fairytale land that was? Well, you didn’t think they’d leave the narrative as linear as that, did you?Read More at: http://tvline.com/2012/08/28/walking-dead-season-3-death-spoiler/#utm_source=copypaste&utm_campaign=referral

That is also the title of a Joseph Conrad novella, which is also a frame narrative/unreliable author. When it comes to K&H, just about everything is/can be connected. They are heavily into classic literature and film, as well as modern adaptions and epic stories. As you pointed out above, the clue from Archie’s notebook, ‘frames himself as victor in all conflicts’ could very well have multiple meanings…especially if you interpret the words on their own- frame, victor, conflict…
gypsyParticipantThat’s a good observation, Marilou. Henry is holding on to hope. In the beginning, Emma was trying to hold on to reality. Regina is holding on to revenge. Gold/Rumple seems to be holding on to guilt. There is still the element of good vs evil. Seems to be the underlying basis in OUAT as well as LOST.
gypsyParticipantDoes anyone even realize the significance of the literary choices these writers choose to include? Just going by LOST, and the influence the novels that were depicted during the entire run of that show, should give ppl some idea. OUAT may seem like a show about Fairy Tales….well, that’s like saying LOST was a show about a plane crash
gypsyParticipantI meant no line in the sand when it comes to introducing characters from many different genre’s. Of course they have to have ‘rules’, but, rules that they, themselves make.
gypsyParticipant“Don’t tell me what I can’t do!” -John Locke (LOST). K&H are geniuses. They made Rumplestiltskin and the Beast one in the same…..and they did it flawlessly and made it believable. There is no such thing as a line in the sand to these guys….(example: LOST). They haven’t disappointed me yet. I have complete trust in them. If Dr. Whale does turn out to be Frankenstein, I’m sure it will be done in a way that fits in perfectly with the storyline.
gypsyParticipantConsidering these are the LOST writers, and LOST incorporated Science/Faith…it’s not a far stretch for OUAT to incorporate Science into Fantasy. Although, I do agree, Frankenstein, in it’s era, was not considered Science.
September 23, 2012 at 3:32 pm in reply to: 2007?? What is the basis of this and is it still true? #154412gypsyParticipantIn S1E4 The Price of Gold, Emma tells Ashley she was 18 when she had a kid. I think it’s more than likely that she was 17, almost 18 and just rounded up when she said that to Ashley. I mean, like I said, if she was 17 and 11 mnoths, for instance, she wouldn’t say “I was 17 and 11 months…” and being that she was closer to 18 than 17, she would say 18…..
September 23, 2012 at 2:31 pm in reply to: 2007?? What is the basis of this and is it still true? #154393gypsyParticipantOf course Emma knows Henry’s birthday, she’s his mother. Emma told Ashley/Cinderells she was 18 when she had a kid. She could have been 17 and 11monhts and rounded up and said 18. That would make Henry born a month before her birthday and he woukd be 10 at the time he met Emma on her 28th birthday. She could’ve had him 3 days, a week, 3weeks after her 18th birthday. That would technically make Henry still 9 when he met Emma, but he would be turning 10, Regina could’ve rounded up and said “he’s 10″…I know they didn’t acknowledge a birthday for Henry….but then again, they didn’t acknowledge any holidays at all. It seemed to be Fall in Storybrooke and Emma was there for a few months, so in ‘reality’ there should have been some holidays, that would give Storybrooke a time frame, and there is no time frame in Storybrooke because of time being frozen.
gypsyParticipantTallahassee- love the LOST nods 🙂
And, yeah, there are a lot of Frankenstein connections!
