This thread, the Tallahassee Neal lovefest thread, and knowing there were other SwanFire fans to talk to is what made me want to start posting here! One other place where I talk with other fans is all about Hook and Emma and the other one is obsessed with Rumbelle (which is their prerogative of course) but I have a soft spot for Neal and Emma and have since their story was told in Tallahassee. I just love them together and totally agree that they are probably endgame, but of course their journey back to each other isn’t going to be easy. Why would these guys make anything easy for us?! They’re going to drive us all totally bonkers, LOL
Fave Neal/Emma Moment from Manhattan: When they first meet in the alley and are surprised to see each other. I swear I’ve re-watched that scene more times than I care to admit and I crack up at Emma’s pouty thing when Neal walks away and at her comment, “HEY, I am the only one who gets to be angry right now!” every single time!
Before I get too far into this essay, here’s some history about me and my general OUAT fandom. I started off watching OUAT right from the pilot so I’m not a new fan of this show. I loved it right from the get go. I’ve actually talked about it in many different places online since I started watching it. I joined up with a Facebook OUAT page that I barely post in anymore simply because I don’t go on FB all that much (and they were the folks obsessed with Rumbelle and didn’t always talk about the rest of the show so I eventually lost interest as I didn’t have many friends there who wanted to chat about the rest of the show). The fandom was SO much fun and I enjoyed talking about this show with so many fans. I lived through the nightmare that being part of the Lost fandom became and figured I was safe watching OUAT since the fans weren’t as rabid as Lost fans were back then (whoops….wrong thinking on my part, LOL). Little did I know what was coming, LOL 😆
At any rate, my favorite character on this show is Emma. It has been since she whacked that bail jumper’s head on his steering wheel. I loved her energy, her sass, her quick thinking, her strength, her resilience, and her warm but very broken heart. I watched her quietly light that candle on her birthday cupcake and lament that she was spending another birthday alone. It just captured my heart and I instantly knew I was going to be rooting hard for her to find her happy ending. I love all the characters on this show but I identify with Emma a lot more than any of the others because I share a sense of that feeling of abandonment having grown up with a very absentee father (even though we live in the same city, he has never been all that interested in me). That does cause a certain pain inside you that never goes away although there are things that can help a person not feel so alone including a puppy eyed thief with a great smile. 😉
Which brings me to how I got to my SwanFire fandom but let me back up for one more thing. I actually loved Emma & Graham so much in season one. He made her smile, he was charming, he treated her well, and even through his cursed persona, he somehow found the strength to stand up to Regina and get himself out of his bad situation. I loved that her affection for him and the fact that she’s true love incarnate helped him get his memories back. I wasn’t spoiled at all for his death so it took me by total surprise when he died in Emma’s arms. That broke my heart and I cried so much for them. It was around this time that I started wondering more about her dating history and specifically about Henry’s father (count me as another who had a feeling Rumple’s long lost son was Henry’s dad after we found out what happened to him later in the season). Emma was so closed off towards love and I wondered why for a long time until we saw True North and she talked about Henry’s father for the first time. I didn’t believe her false story about him for a minute but I also didn’t believe what she told MM either. I figured he fell somewhere in the middle and something had to have happened that broke her heart and helped put up those walls.
Cue Tallahassee. We had met that mystery guy in Broken and I just KNEW he was going to be Henry’s father (and Baelfire too but that’s a whole other essay). I watched most of Tallahassee with a big smile on my face because Emma & Neal were SO charming, so in love, so young, so determined to make a life together, and so hoping to be the family to each other that both of then hadn’t had for most of their lives. I’ll admit that I enjoyed Emma’s interactions with Hook in that episode as well but that was back when I actually liked Hook because he was written as an actual villain and their snarking back and forth was hilarious, but with Neal it was SO innocent and pure and it was just enjoyable to see Emma SO happy. Happy. Emma was happy. EMMA WAS HAPPY! We hadn’t really seen Emma truly happy since the show started so to see her smiling, joking, laughing, loving her life even though they had nothing….it just warmed my heart so much and even though I hate the term shipping because of the negative connotations, I full out became a SwanFire shipper after Tallahassee because I wanted to see Emma that HAPPY again. No one else has made her smile like she does in my avatar since Neal, no one else makes her eyes light up like he does, no one else loves their son like him, and no one else will ever have her heart the way Neal does and it scares the crap out of her. By the time we got to Manhattan, I was fully convinced that Emma & Neal were the real life fairytale and the biggest story that A&E were telling us and I wanted to then and still want to see now where it’s going to go next. It’s special, it’s real, it’s raw, it’s beautiful, it’s painful, and in the words of A&E, it’s POETRY. 🙂
Wow. That was a lot longer than I planned it to be but I’ve been slightly distracted by Grey’s and Scandal tonight so I had to type things up fast during commercials. Sorry if something doesn’t make sense, LOL 😆 😉

#MoreBOOMLessGloomI wanted to write up my “Why I Started Shipping SwanFire” post last night but got distracted by all the shiny new episodes of my other fave shows (Nashville = winning), but hopefully I can write that up tonight before two more of my fave shows come back on (Grey’s & Scandal = winning). I feel like writing that out would be therapeutic for me at this point, LOL

YES YES YESSSS I was just coming in to post this… so brilliant!
And ultimately why I still have #hope. A and E are storytellers first and foremost. They’ve been telling the story of Emma Swan getting her life back since S1. And dealing with Neal and their issues is a HUGE (huge huge huge huge) part of that, so even if Neal dies someday, it can’t be in 316. I mean…come on. How do you go and kill a character before they manage to resolve ANYTHING between him and Emma, him and Henry, him and Rumple even!

I can’t get over how many people think the ‘big death’ happens in 3×16 just because they filmed in a graveyard at night one time. They filmed at night for like a week and a half or something back then so who knows what all was going on with the story. Forget the fact that they’ve actually filmed in that area several times in the past and those scenes weren’t funerals (or even deaths) at all. I remember all of us thinking Granny was a goner back in S2 from set photos and it makes me laugh now how people take things like random pictures (most of which weren’t even taken while filming IIRC) and turn them into something that they might want to see instead of thinking about any other scenarios.
And for the record, I think that there’s NO WAY Neal is dying at all this season if we’re all ready up to episode 3×19 and we still seem to be without any noticeable SwanFire interactions. Emma as a character will come to a screeching halt in the character development department without resolutions to all of the things in her past. We know she still hasn’t totally dealt with her parents abandonment so how on earth is she supposed to deal with her and Neal’s history if he’s not even in the same realm as her right now?! My bet again is that he’s in Oz trying to help his father…seems more and more likely as things start adding up. There’s also no way that can be done in a short amount of episodes either so if he somehow gets back to them in SB before the end of the season (say, episode 3×20 ish), there’s only three episodes left to deal with all that history and given that the WW is probably going to be causing even more drama/destruction than ever by that point, I’m thinking the SawnFire resolution will not be happening much, if at all, this season but their reunion could at least get the ball rolling and set up future stuff for them. I don’t know. I may just be rambling at this point but the more things start adding up from actual FACTS that we know from that first episode, the more convinced I am that Neal isn’t going anywhere. RG is right, these guys are great storytellers, and they’ve used a lot of words to describe SwanFire that aren’t things to be taken lightly nor are they things that are easily resolved in a few episodes. I think the slow burn is exactly what their plan is and although it sucks that we haven’t gotten much in the MRJ photo department, I think the story overall may make that worthwhile in the end.
Random head canon from a bored person at work: Neal has been in Oz for most of season 3B trying to rescue his father but he discovers that he needs help from everyone else (especially Belle) in order to truly save his father from Zelena. In episode 3×19 or 3×20, he figures out a way to SB via some type of portal (maybe he finds the shoes?) and starts trying to find Emma and the others in town. Before Neal can get to them though, Zelena discovers that he’s escaped and sends Walsh, her head monkey, after him to stop him from telling them everything he knows about her and Oz. Walsh bites Neal and starts the process to turn him into a monkey too and once Neal realizes what’s happening, and he sees Walsh’s face after he turns back into human form, he runs away to hide in the forest because he knows eventually he won’t be able to tell them anything now. He decides that if he can’t tell them anything, he’ll help them the only way he can by protecting them from the other monkeys and from Zelena’s plan (which I can’t figure out at this point, LOL). In the midst of a random attack on a crowd of people, one bad monkey goes for Emma but is taken out by Neal who swoops in to save her. She thinks she’s been captured but instead he drops her off on the beach away from the insanity, kind of pats her to make sure she’s okay, and then flies off the opposite direction of the other monkeys making Emma wonder why this one is different from the others. Emma being Emma decides to go find out more about him and once she finds him hiding in the forest, through a series of yes/no questions she figures out that Neal is the monkey who saved her and also sees that he’s desperately trying to hold onto his humanity by helping them out the only way he can at that time. Emma swears they’ll save him but in another random attack the next day, Neal is trying to protect them all again and the other monkeys turn on him (per Zelena’s orders who’s figured out who he is and now wants him destroyed) and he falls to the ground badly injured. Emma runs to him and asks someone to call an ambulance (prompting what could be my favorite line from anyone ever, “I have to call 911 for a monkey?!”). She’s holding onto him and telling him that help is on the way but Neal is shaking because he knows he’s badly hurt and probably dying. Emma tells him to hold on for her and when he starts fading away, she admits that she loves him and while crying kisses his face….prompting Neal’s monkey curse to end in a blaze of yellow light (hello Oz reference) because we all know TLK will break ANY curse. 😉 He realizes that she actually was able to save him and they share EPIC HUG #3 while everyone watches amazed (including Hook at this point if he’s still alive and maybe it’s here he realizes that he has to do right by Nealfire now and make sure he gets to be with his family). Neal fills them in on what he knows (including that Walsh isn’t who they all thought after seeing a photo of him on Emma’s phone) and they all form a plan to defeat the WW and rescue his father which leads us into the final two episodes of the season.
Hopefully you guys are able to appreciate how weird and dorky that felt to write (I can’t believe I used the word monkey so much in this theory, LOL) but DANGIT, it could actually work somehow, LOL 😆
I will now be calling a therapist and set up a session with them because clearly I have totally lost it. 😉
