The characters definitely do really out of character things, but they also have huge life alternating things happen to them and pretty much just return to exactly the same people at the end of each season. At least, this has been the case for awhile. Emma has looked like she is dying and been worried about being the savior for seasons and seasons. Snow and Charming have done nothing since Season 3. Regina has been on the good side, but sarcastic for awhile. Rumpel has been waffling about whether or not he wants power or family since forever.

Emma and Regina are probably the most different now then they were in Season 1. But it has been seasons since they have had any real growth. Emma was learning to let people in in Season 1 and 2. Rumpel found Neal and started becoming part of the family in Season 2. Snow and Charming have really done nothing since Season 2. Regina made her turn around in Season 2 and 3.

The writers definitely care more about plot then character, so the characters go way out of character in service to the plot for an episode or so and then return to center at the end without having learned or changed from their experience. The characters have good moments at times, but there is no real growth, not anymore.

I think one of the problems with the show is that they don’t really do big character episodes anymore. In the first season, they introduced the characters and did a lot of development with them in each episode. They just don’t do that anymore. The characters have remained static for a really long time at this point.

It is really bizarre. It is like the writers are so afraid of changing their characters and maybe upsetting the audience that they don’t do anything. Character development is key.

I think they said that the guy Nimue killed was some sort of sorcerer. I agree that the dark one mythology was pretty terribly done. Very inconsistent with what was shown before that.

I don’t think the villains are the best characters on this show. They are the worst written and most inconsistent characters on the show and cause plot and character inconsistencies in other characters. I, also, think that making Henry date a villain is more of the same with all the hero and villain couples on this show. Also, i think they need to have a female heroine on this show because they just lost all of their main female protagonists and now have way too many male characters.

I think right now more likely then not Lucy’s mother is the villain; i just think that is boring and repetitive and will not be interesting. Especially if they are going to waste half a season trying to “surprise” us with that information.

MRJ probably just wants to see everyone. I don’t think that Neal is coming back, but it would be the easiest thing in the world to bring him back to life. Much easier then other characters that they brought back.

I am definitely a fan of the grandma Regina and great grandpa Rumpel that could be there. They would actually have to use it though and actually have the characters talk about their past and not just have it be about the new big bad.

They could bring Neal back from the dead very easily.

It would be inconsistent to say that they weren’t aging because of the curse. Time is moving in Storybrooke. People had babies. Cinderella couldn’t have her baby during the first curse because time was standing still. That is not something that is happening in Storybrooke now. They might use something like that, but it would be inconsistent with past seasons.

In Season 1 they had all of these weird cryptic moments where we didn’t know what was going on, like all the hints about who Red was or that weird scene where Rumpel was digging in the forest. There were tons of these things. Then in Season 3B when we meet Zelena we immediately know she is evil and we very quickly know who she is and yet the main characters interact with her like complete morons for half the season. That doesn’t work. It is like they have forgotten how to do mystery.

Oh man that is spot on. How about not knowing if Rumple remembered in season 1. And then he says “please.” Snow being framed by a mystery someone. They do need more mystery for sure. That’s what made season 1 so great, at least for me.

Exactly, and you can do mystery without memory problems. Rumpel had his memories in Season 1 and he was all cryptic and creepy and it was fascinating. I forgot about the please, but exactly, that was awesome. We knew when the character’s knew. They could have Henry and Lucy’s mother use cryptic language about what happened in their past and slowly give us a little bit more over time, until we finally see in the flashbacks what happened between them, especially if she is possibly turned evil somehow. There is a way to build suspense that these writers are capable of, but it has been years since they did it.

I think about the dark swan ark where all of the cryptic interesting things that happened at the beginning seemed to have no relation to what actually happened once we saw the main event of what happened in the flashbacks. If Hook is the dark one, then he should act like it, seeing things that aren’t there maybe, having Emma worried about what he is doing and wanting him to be watched, maybe Emma wanting him to wear a magical suppression cuff, not Emma threatening her family and staying away from them. They could have even used cryptic dark one language where we think they are talking about Rumpel when it ends up they are talking about Hook.

They just need to find that place of mystery and building the story and making the end satisfy the cryptic clues given to us over the arc. They can do it. They just have to remember that they can.
