Im very exited for the ep Jenna_B. Loving Z as a a villain more and more. Fairytales ARE dark! It was just Disney that got that part wrong. No one is saying that fairy tales aren’t dark but there are some lines that I didn’t think ONCE would cross–rape, for instance. After the backlash for Regina and Graham, frankly, they should know better. Messing with an infant baby is also getting a little too post-9pm. Fairy tales are dark but there is dark and then there is excessive.
Well I dont think they have crossed the line yet. Ofcourse that will always be a subjective opinion. But I dont think they will either. Its ABC right? they dont do many edgy Things in my understanding of them.
Actually, ABC does have some of the ‘racier’ dramas on network television – Scandal, Grey’s (I suppose, I haven’t watched in forever), Revenge…it’s by no means in the same league as, say, CW, and they look like a bunch of nuns compared to cable tv, but for the big 5, they do have some shows that play with that appropriate for all audiences line…of course, the shows mentioned are also not in the 8pm hour…
I wonder if our minds aren’t taking things further than the show will, though. I agree, the S1 Regina/Graham thing was pretty borderline, but I think it’s younger audience didn’t necessarily ‘get’ what was going on (doesn’t make it right, just saying…) In regard to the Zelena storyline – we were under the impression that Rumple was pretty much completely taken over due to Zelena having the dagger, but we’ve now seen that’s not quite the case. Zelena is driven by the same things many of these characters are – the desire to feel loved. She just happens to be bat crap crazy, too! So I think what we’re seeing in pics and whatnot might actually be Rumple pulling out some of his old tricks and at least attempting to manipulate Zelena. Whether it works is another story, but my point is just that it might not be quite as bad as we’re thinking.
As for the baby…I have no clue. That one is throwing me through a complete loop.
[adrotate group="5"]Jenna_BParticipantOk…so I’m the only one excited for the episode? Yeah, it’s moving away from the fairy tales (the Disney-fied version, anyway) but that was going to have to happen sooner or later or you run out of show. I haven’t read the books, but the Wizard of Oz is not a fluffy movie, so I expected something more along these lines. Zelena’s so creepy I love it.
Jenna_BParticipantStereotypes and archetypes and classics vs modern lit…I get all of it. But for once I’d like to see a story about magic without the cautionary tale. What if good does have magic in this realm? How does a ‘normal’ person handle that? If you have a gift and use it for good then why does there have to be a price to pay?
In Emma’s case, I think she’s paid the ‘price’ 100fold at this point. She was abandoned by her parents, lost in ‘the system,’ believed for a long time that she was abandoned by Neal (No I know, he didn’t but she thought he didand it did contribute), felt forced to give up Henry and the list goes on. For Emma, it would be nice to see magic is actually a gift – for all the things she had to experience before she even knew magic existed.
Jenna_BParticipantThere’s a few ways they can go with Emma and her magical abilities. As mentioned, there’s the blanket “all magic comes with a price,” meaning ultimately, Emma will have to pay a price. There’s the ‘Emma’s the Savior’ and that in and of itself is the price of her magic.
But they could also begin to attempt a differentiation between light magic and dark magic. To date, we’ve mostly seen magic fit into boxes – Dark Magic: Regina’s revenge, Cora being, well, Cora, Zelena (all, notably, stemming from the same source – the Dark One himself). Then there’s Pan, whose magic was dark because at his core, Pan/Malcolm had zero redeeming qualities. They use magic primarily for selfish reasons. And when it comes to Rumple, he may ‘help’ others, but the price is always steep. Because the root of the ‘help’ is coming from darkness. Rumple loses his power with Belle’s True Love because he doesn’t know how to use his magic for good – therefore, the price he pays is always so great.
Then you’ve got the fairies – Light Magic. Of course, their magic is limited, and you could say it does come with it’s own price in that they seem to only be able to function single-mindedly, and are more at the mercy of others than their own individual beings (save for Tinkerbell, the ‘rebel’).
But as Regina pointed out, Emma’s raw ability is strong. Emma is by no means perfect or an angel, or even particularly joyful 90% of the time (!) but in her heart, there is good. Her intentions are to protect her family, and the innocent, and to defeat evil. And those intentions are strong. Her magic comes from the Light, because in her core, she is Light. She is the product of True Love, and apparently this is why she is so special (we’re going to forget a moment about kids like, oh, Cinderella’s baby or Philora’s baby-to-be or Snowing #2 because that’s a whoooole other discussion! 🙂 ). But she isn’t a fairy – she is human. She is not one-dimensional, she has goodness and she has flaws.
So I think there may not BE a price for Emma to pay. I think the more Emma learns about her magic, and the more she embraces who she really is, the more she will see the Savior as a positive thing, and therefore, it is no longer a “price” she is paying. And because the magic comes from Light and Good, and therefore, is not used for Dark or even selfish reasons, there is no price. She gives and protects using the magic she has, unlike those who practice Dark Magic.
Jenna_BParticipant@POM – I see where you’re coming from…but the big thing with Captain Cobra is that Hook and Henry are bonding because of Neal, and not because of Emma. This concept is integral to the intertwining relationships between the three. Because there is so much more going on than just ‘you’re not my father’ or ‘you’re in love with my mother,’ I think though those reactions might be typical for an average 12 year old, Henry is anything but your average 12 year old.
Hook is not taking Henry as a favor to Emma, he’s doing it because it helps Hook come to terms with Bae, and it allows Henry to learn about Neal as a kid. Henry was pretty go-with-the-flow with Hook until Hook explained that Neal lost his father when he was Henry’s age. Neal is central to Hook and Henry’s relationship, not Emma. And Henry is extremely perceptive. He knows something’s going on. Hook acknowledged that, while explaining to Henry that his mother feels it’s for the best right now – Hook managed to support Emma’s wishes while not lying to Henry. Their bond over Neal, and the fact that Hook acknowledges that Henry knows more, memoryless, than anyone else gives him credit for, is why they are bonding so quickly. I think when Henry learns the truth, he’s going to rebel against Emma. Because his relationship with Hook has very little to do with Emma, I don’t think Henry is going to look at Hook in a ‘you’re not my father’ kind of way. Because isn’t trying to be his father. He isn’t trying to take on a paternal role. He needs Henry as much as Henry will need him when Henry learns the truth – and very likely feels betrayed by his mother.
Emma, too, realizes Hook and Henry’s relationship has very little to do with her. And she supports this. Because Hook can do one thing no one else – not Emma, or even Rumple can – tell Henry about his father when Neal was Henry’s age. Tell Henry about Neal’s struggles at that age. Emma, too, knows that Hook is not going to try to replace Neal – in either Henry nor Emma’s lives – because for all three of them, Neal is irreplaceable. So when Henry does learn, and does rebel against her, I think she’s going to lean on Hook to be there for Henry because Henry doesn’t feel he can trust Emma. Completing the circle, I think Hook is going to be essential in helping mother and son re-establish their relationship after what really, is the biggest lie/betrayal they have had to face in their relationship.
Jenna_BParticipantHahaha oh man now I want to see Hook giving Henry ‘girl advice’! No I want to see Henry going to both of them at the same time – hi awkward!
Jenna_BParticipant@HappyEndings – the only other place I really go is Tumblr…but I don’t post – way too confusing for me! But I follow some blogs – including Obisgirl and KJ’s. Good stuff. But this is where I go to chat and share my thoughts.
Jenna_BParticipantWell, the poster Colin autographed for William Shatner’s charity auction is officially out of my price range at $1000! (3rd highest bid in the auction btw…)
