So, did the writers mess up?

Remember, the show writes primarily for the ‘casual viewer’. The casual viewer likely does not remember in so-and-so episode this happened, so when we need to change it for the current story, no one will notice…

I don’t always check out the promo stills, but have they ever released something like that that so clearly centered on extras? Seems kind of odd to me that the only character in the shot is Blue and she’s off to the sideThe old people again! Who are the old people?!
Hi Slurpeez…and RG (I’m sure you’re still having to come on in here to mod, even if you aren’t up for it – I hope we’ve been good for you, we’ve been trying!)
As CS shippers we feel terrible for your loss but we also feel helpless because we don’t really know what we can do to help – there really isn’t anything we can do to help except to allow space for you all to grieve together while letting you know we really do care. But then we are also still amongst the living and unfortunately are unintentionally hurting some grieving people by going on with life. I’m not talking about the people who are being purposely mean or trying to egg people on – that’s just cruel and immature. So we are bound to end up saying some things that might hurt right now because the wound is so fresh but please know we aren’t doing so intentionally and we are trying to keep within our CS thread so we don’t risk hurting feelings unless it is some kind of generalized topic. No one WANTS to write anything that will hurt someone’s feelings but right now I think that writing about the death from different perspectives is bound to be painful.
I don’t think I can say it any better than @RGF – please know that as a group, on this forum, we do realize SFers are not happy, and we are not in any way intentionally belittling you or that pain. Many of us, I’m sure, can say we’d feel the same way about our ship. And we are truly sorry our fellow OUATers are saddened right now.
Many times over the last few days I’ve been remembering a recent conversation that was had in the SF thread – I’m sure I’ve mentioned it here & I know I’ve brought it up elsewhere. The conversation was about Hook/Emma as a platonic relationship and was generally extremely positive. I was very touched by that conversation, because I like to think that’s exactly how we feel about Neal/Emma. Many of us liked Neal & many of us are upset, too, about his death. (But that’s a whole, other, more irate tangent directed at writers and powers that be)
I know a lot of our conversations in this thread might seem insensitive if you are not CS, especially now. But in trying to be respectful, it’s why we’re keeping it here. We don’t want anyone who doesn’t want CS/Hook or even other aspects of the show stuck in anyone’s faces that doesn’t want to see it. I’ve posted a little in some other threads, but don’t want to ignite anything or have anything misconstrued because of some people’s emotions being (understandably) raw. Please understand, too, that this forum is not the same as other forums or social media. Twitter has been even more brutal than usual, on all sides. Tumblr’s probably a pretty nasty place, too (I only follow a few blogs, mostly from people here, so I can’t really speak from the ship/fandom as a whole). But those of us that are here, are here for a reason – that nastiness makes us as upset as any other person that chooses this forum over others, regardless of which characters/ships they prefer. But generally here in our forum, we genuinely care about our fellow OUATers and are thinking of you now.
Since we know Hook and Henry are going to have a scene together (I think it’s next episode), I bet Henry is going to ask Hook about Neal, what he was like, etc
I hope so! I really want Hook and Henry to bond – and in a perfect world, it’s shown as tribute to Neal, not as Hook playing ‘baby daddy’.
With Neal’s death, it’s occurred to me that Hook and Emma have something new in common (and, I hope this isn’t the wrong time to bring this up). Neal won’t be there, but because of Hook and Emma’s close relationships with him, together, they can help Henry get to know his father better (even after he gets his memories back).
I don’t think it’s wrong to bring it up! Yes, I agree. I’m really hoping that they do ‘keep Neal alive’ in spirit if they felt the need to kill him off. I would really like to see and hear more of both SF and CaptainFire as they tell various stories to Henry.
I’m not sure Hook knew how in danger Neal was. I assume the conversations between the were short – I don’t know that Hook could have known about the whole Neal actually succeeding in rising Rumple-but-now-they-share-a-body? I’m still trying to wrap my head around the whole 2nd part of the episode.
I’m guessing the message was pretty much – this is Neal, Emma’s in danger, go get her and left the details up to Hook, knowing Hook would figure something out?

I hear you, @Rumplegoldfan. I don’t think people will boycott, @Jennifer. Well…they might. And honestly, if you lose favor with the show, don’t watch, that’s your prerogative, but in the end this is an ensemble show. I like certain characters, love others…except for Pan and the WW, don’t really hate any (and really, I love to hate the WW!) – but I watch the show for the show, not just for Hook and/or CS. If they had killed off my favorite, yes, I’d be mad and sad. But I’d still watch. Because I’m here for the story. I think when you have shows with a large ensemble, you almost have to keep yourself from falling too in love with one character – because anything can happen. It’s not like when it’s the Joe Schmo Show – without Joe Schmo, there is no show…(ok, that’s a lot of rhyming, sorry for that!) I do feel for those that are hurting though. I do hope they come back when they’re ready. I am certainly not trying to belittle anyone’s pain or sadness.
I liked Neal, and I am feeling a little spoiled because my favorite was spared. So I am conflicted. I’ve been angry from the beginning that Neal’s storyline felt the least fleshed out and most contrived. Why did he HAVE to leave Emma and let her go to jail? Never got a good answer for that one. What was Neal doing during the 11 years he was separated from Emma/Henry? Dunno, they never really let us know. How are we supposed to understand that he loved Tamara and intended to marry her but loved Emma and wasn’t going to stop fighting? Ok, that’s just sloppy writing. And I am miserable about not getting some quality CaptainFire!! MRJ acted the heck out of what he was given though.
People are going to hate what they hate and see what they see. But I liked how they handled Neal in relation to CS in this episode. He seemed…to understand CS, and that it is going to happen. Maybe he knew he was going to die – and I’m not entirely sure he knew…? Maybe because he loves Emma and wants what’s best – and realizes there’s too much that’s happened with him and Emma to really ever go back? I don’t know. But I did get the sense that CS will happen, Neal would be supportive of it, and we will see CS respect and honor the fact that Neal was important to both Emma & Hook.
I’m looking forward to Hook & Henry bonding next week…but at the same time, not looking forward to it. You know there’s going to be backlash. But like this episode, I guess you just have to watch out for the hate and dismiss it… I will say, I am quite happy this forum didn’t seem to fall apart at it’s seams after yesterday’s episode. There was a lot of emotion, and it was tense at times, but I didn’t see any real disrespect or accusations when I was on. That made me happy.
I don’t mean to rub salt in the wound to any SF shipper that happens to look into this thread but…..what I found curious is that a lot of people have said that they established Neal and Emma as TL’s this episode and I just don’t see it. I know Belle said something about that but that doesn’t make it so
Agreed… cant go by Belle – this is the smarty pants were barely there shorts and tights in the mountains with snow and then states ‘its cold’… really? you dont say. sorry – dont trust her thoughts on True Love – plus she really doesnt know Bae/Neal from a hole in the wall.
ok shorty shorts just caused me to snort. Loudly. At work. That was awesome…and exactly what I was thinking whenever we saw Belle!
Some SFers would have my head for saying this -and it’s not to gloat by any means- but I think Neal knew the writing on the wall the entire time. He knows who Emma is going to find Tallahassee with – and still he told her to find it. I’ve always liked Neal – thought him ridiculously underused but I liked him- so when he made that statement I wasn’t surprised…but I was quite touched for our pirate.
The next few episodes should be interesting. I think were going to see both Emma and Hook supporting and needing support from each other.
I can see both of them tempted to try to bring Neal back – and even be wiling to work on the one thing they both want back…but I don’t think in the end they will be able to do so. I honestly don’t think the death is a fake out. Much as I hate to say it. I would love that storyline but I just don’t believe it will come to fruition
