I agree with everything you have to say about Neal & Emma’s relationship. On paper, Mom, Dad & child sounds great. But that’s not always the case. I think that A&E are very deliberately showing us that they all love each other and will always be family, but Emma and Neal just can’t be together. For the reasons you gave. To quote Emma, quoting Henry “a hero would come back.” And he didn’t. Maybe if Emma weren’t the savior, it’d be different. But when you have the life she has, and the responsibilities she has, you need someone you can trust 100%. Neal made the decision to leave. It was a poor decision. I firmly believe Neal could have done things differently. But neither Emma nor Neal can change that fact, and they both have to live with it. The one huge problem I have with the plotholes and whatnot in the show is the whole ‘Neal had to leave or bad things would happen.’ What bad things? Worse than going to jail for a crime you didn’t commit and feeling like you had to give up your child? After spending 17 or so years going from house to house and never having a home?

This is probably one of the arguments I hate the most when someone argues Captain Hook or CS. I think the writers have been clear – Killian Jones was a man of ‘good form’ – he literally walked the line of the straight and narrow. There was good and bad, heroes and villains – and absolutely no grey. And he was likely this way because his father left as a kid, I don’t believe we’ve ever been told about his mother, and was essentially lost but for his brother. Hook became a pirate because he lost that brother, his only family, in doing something for a king he learned was corrupt. Literally his entire life was destroyed.

Why did Killian join the navy in the first place? Because that’s where his brother was. “I would follow you to the ends of the earth, brother.” That’s what this man does. He commits himself to those he loves. When his brother dies, he’s completely lost – he’s going to make a career change? He needs to hang on to what little he has left, and the JR is one of the few things he has to remind him of his brother. He’s not about to give that up.

Does that necessarily mean he wants to travel the seas forever? No. The scene between Hook & Charming in 3×12 is not Hook saying he wants to go home. It’s Hook saying he’s just lost the person that’s most important to him, and being with her family and so many people that remind him of Emma is too painful. So, he’s going to look for the one thing that can give him some peace. His ship. Because if he has a goal, maybe a small piece of him will focus on that goal and not the fact that he just lost the one person he dared to love in 300 years, other than Bae, who was lost to him long ago.

Hook’s idea of happiness is not being a so-called pirate. It’s not sailing the seas. It’s the same thing that Emma’s looking for – family. Home. A place to feel welcome and loved, and to love in return.

In terms of ratings, I don’t think we have anything to work about.  3×13 retained 3×12’s numbers and those plus the demos were very good for this day and timeslot.

I do like tumblr but it seems so much more impersonal than our little thread here.  I do find a good amount of thought provoking stuff there…I’ll have to post them here more… Like I tell myself and then forget to do!  I think now thar they’ve laid down the foundation for 3b, it’ll start giving us more to analyze and analyze and analyze some more!!!

I hear you, RGF. I was thinking the same thing. We need to get CE and her pretties back! Surayya’s rocked (whoever does the ones above is awesome, I haven’t seen one that hasn’t made me laugh and think ‘so true!) but I miss my morning kisses too! I think the hiatus scared some folks away. It got a little heated at times, but RG and MP worked really hard to keep people in line and put the negativity to bed, and I agree, chat has been a lot lighter again. I’ve had a lot of thought-provoking talks there lately, along with a great amount of pure silliness. Even the threads have had some great stuff lately.

I don’t think Zelena & Bae are connected, other than through Rumple in some way (and I’m not sure I’m leaning to Rumple being Z’s daddy either…)

I think Emma’s Dorothy.  I know, A&E said she’s her own character but 1) things change and 2) A&E say a lot of stuff that’s misleading.  From the beginning, Emma’s story has revolved around family and home…she has found her family and made peace with who they are, and 3B will show Emma finding her own definition of ‘home’.

Honestly I really hope CS isn’t the wedding.  As it’s been said, I want to see the pre-marriage relationship. It would be an awesome way to show how these characters will need to adapt to whatever life they choose.  Haha I want to see Hook trying to figure out how people date in this land and Emma reacting to Hook’s Old World sense of courtship. As similar as they are, they’re always in crisis mode. Their day-to-day lives are/were VERY different however.  I want to enjoy that learning curve before they jump into official wedded bliss.

so when Hook was telling his story of the little birdie bringing the note… he said that he was sailing the realms… as in other kingdoms or other worlds? so if its other worlds how was he world hopping and if he was just in FTL and just sailing about the different kingdoms – how did he get to our world. And were the heck is the JR

I was rewatching this morning and thought the same thing!  Sailing the realms?  What?  I thought it was supposed to be so difficult to cross realms and he’s just floating around them?  I thought yes, his ship was enchanted (was it?  How/when?) but needed a portal to get from realm to realm.  WHAT was our pirate doing during that year – besides pining for a certain blonde?!

I’m thinking however he got here, it wasn’t via the JR.  I’m still hanging onto my thought that he somehow lost the ship to Blackbeard in some trade for whatever he needed to get to Emma.  Giving up one ‘home’ for his ‘true home’.  Sigh.  Swoon.  Sigh…….and yes, I know we see it in a future episode in SB, but perhaps he left BB with some leftover vendetta and BB tries to get revenge in SB.  Or something like that.  But still, he traded the JR for whatever he needed to get to Emma.  That’s my headcannon and I’m sticking to it! 🙂

I had to laugh at that! I come from a big old Italian family “right off the boat” who do the same thing. I’m in my 40s and I still refer to some elders that I’m not related to as “aunt or uncle” because that’s the way I was raised. I make my kids do the same thing and they always get this confused look on their faces like “who the heck is this?” I firmly believe that a child’s life in enriched by the people he\she is surrounded by, blood relation or not.

My mom is one of 7 and they are all very close so I grew up with my cousins, and they were virtually siblings.   Haha, we’re all within about 5 years of each other in age, so we were into the ‘bar scene’ at the same time and would go out as a huge group.  People in the city knew we were all related and were fascinated.  Or frightened.  Now our kids are all the same age and love being together!

It’s interesting, I don’t remember if it was here or elsewhere, but I remember seeing something to the effect of OUAT really promoting the concept of ‘traditional’ family (justification of SF, I believe, was the point)…to me, it’s exactly the opposite.  They drive home the fact that ‘home’ isn’t a physical place, home is with your family – and ‘family’ by no means is simple on this show!  The most ‘traditional’ family, I suppose, is Snowing…with the impending baby…?  It’s part of what makes the show entertaining…along with flying monkeys and evil queens, and saviors…!!

Different topic – I noticed on tumblr earlier today people were going nuts about the possibility that CS is the wedding…I just don’t see it.  I don’t know that I see Emma, specifically, being concerned with marriage in general.  I guess I don’t see her feeling like a formal wedding and marriage is necessary; and TL alone is what binds two people together.  I thought this might be an interesting concept, especially given next week’s promo.  It seems we might touch upon Charming’s dreams of Emma’s marriage…I’m wondering if it’s all connected in some way…thoughts about Emma and the idea of marriage?
