Ok, almost finished a huge long post and then with one slip of the hand it was erased and gone! That’s one thing I hate about writing directly on the site – it’s way too sensitive and deletes stuff way too easily! Always draft in wordpad or word, Jenna – you know that!! Argh!
Anyway, HAPPY OUAT DAY!!!! We’re going on a date tonight!!! I cannot wait!! haha, and yeah, that’s all I got right now, not in the mood to retype what I was saying before deleting it!!
[adrotate group="5"]Jenna_BParticipantI don’t get the chance to come visit for 4 days and I have to backpedal 11 pages! I now have my head wonderfully full of pretties and good discussion! 🙂
In regard to the dress – I’m not shocked by the controversy. With some folks in this fandumb, a character can sneeze and people would find a way to twist it into fodder for their anti-whatever agenda. I still love it. Is it completely different than anything we’ve seen Emma in? Yes. But that’s the point. None of the characters on OUAT get the chance to breathe, but many realize you have to enjoy those quiet moments — Emma still hasn’t completely wrapped her head around that thought. But that dress says she’s trying – she’s realizing she has to put herself first sometimes, and allow herself positive experiences to outweigh the difficult ones. So I think the dress is a lovely way to show just how much Emma has grown. Not just in regard to opening herself to a romantic relationship. Her mother, father, and new friend are also there. S1 Emma, if, say Graham had succeeded in getting her to agree to a date, would have shown up in the red leather jacket of armor and I don’t think anyone would know about the date – even her friend, Mary Margaret. But Emma is allowing her parents and friend to be a part of this very huge moment in her life. All of those lessons she’s learned, about family and community and opening up yourself to the good even though the possibility of hurt could sneak in, are finally coming together for Emma.
And I 2nd – 3rd? 4th? 5th? – the comment about CSers understanding Emma’s psychology, and that other shippers’ focus isn’t necessarily Emma (not saying that has to be a bad thing, but I can see, then, why you are devoted to ships that just aren’t happening and frankly, were never going to happen). I see so much SF stuff about family and Henry…which is all well and good but a romantic relationship is not the same thing. Neal and Emma’s responsibilities as parents to their son is one thing – their responsibilities and the way they feel about each other something else entirely. And, yes, they are two different things. I love my son, but my marriage is my relationship with my husband, my family is my relationship with both my son and husband. SQ is a relationship I have more difficulty with. And it’s most certainly NOT because it’s a relationship between two women. (I would love OUAT to explore a same gender relationship, but with two people who love each other, not 2 pieces of canon relationships, or even unrequited love – ie: Aurora and Mulan. But that’s a tangent for a different day/thread!) SQ is the definition of dysfunctional – ALL of Emma’s misery and scars can be traced back to one person – Regina (Ok, some argue not Regina, but Rumple, but I disagree with that assessment.) Regina ripped Emma away from her parents, caused Emma to grow up feeling worthless and alone…and Emma’s supposed to fall in love with Regina? Um…
Luckily, the haters have just reached a point of ridiculousness. I tend to tune out when the whole rape culture thing gets going – and that means arguments made against Hook or Neal and Emma, or Regina and Graham. Because I think it takes reading a LOT into these situations to go from what we’ve been shown and running around in circles shouting “RC! RC! RC!” And I don’t believe it was ever A&E’s intention to suggest any of these relationships were about rape. Studying this topic in college (Communications major, focus on film/tv theory here) there was one example that was always brought up – General Hospital and the marriage of Luke and Laura (and god, am I dating myself here – but I was only 2 when the actual event was shown on tv!!). If you don’t know the reference, long story short Luke raped (like actual rape, not innuendo or heart-stealing-so-she-was-a-rapist nonsense) Laura…then they fell in love, got married and had a couple of kids. And when the marriage was shown on tv, it broke viewership records. People were OBSESSED with Luke and Laura. The whole he raped her bit pretty much got swept under the rug. This is NOT what we’re seeing in OUAT between any of the characters. So as I have huge problems with my Luke & Laura example, I also have huge problems with people throwing around terms like ‘rape’ and ‘rape culture’ or even ‘stalker’, etc in regard to any of the OUAT characters – because 1) nothing has been established in canon and 2) Rape, and ‘rape culture’ is far to important a topic to use it as part of an agenda to denounce or support your favorite fictional characters on a tv show. Sorry – enough of that – end rant!
Onto more positive topics before I end my novel here (hey, 3 days away, right?! 🙂 ) as far as our dear couple goes, I’m loving what we’re getting. Not much is particularly surprising (I refer you back to the ‘we understand these characters’ comments previously brought up) but it is all very in line with what I expect from this couple. One step forward, 2 steps back. Hook supporting Emma, Emma admitting she’s afraid to lose him (HOW HUGE IS THAT?!) – and hopefully, as many suspect, an identity crisis with Hook and Emma taking on the role of supporter in their relationship. I’m still a little on the fence with EM/Ice Queen but I’m loving the Frozen stuff. Almost all of Kristoff’s stuff in the last episode had me either cracking up or squeeing over his attempts to handle his handful of a soon-to-be sister-in-law! And this episode – I think it just might kill us all!! Bring it on – less than 24 hours now!!!
Jenna_BParticipantAaaaand – tee hee:

How about a little script tease from Sunday’s new episode?
” />How so very true is this???
Jenna_BParticipant@RGF – wonderfully put!
In regard to the TVLine article – it is rather spoiler-y but definitely nothing like we got after NYCC (naturally). It definitely keeps me excited about the episode and date this Sunday! It’s interesting, the comments. I usually couldn’t read the OUAT comments on TVLine stories last season because they were so ridiculously anti-Hook/CS (which in and of itself was ridiculous because everyone knows Matt Mitovich practically mans the helm of the CS ship so yeah, his articles are always going to slant pro-CS) but the articles that I’ve read this season directly on the site seem to contain a lot more positive comments. Not sure if people are coming around, CSers are just getting louder and the haters slinking away with their tails between their legs, or what…but it was refreshing. I don’t need others to squeal and go crazy like we do outside CS specific sites/our thread – just have respect for the character/ship, as I(we) try to have respect for others’. I really don’t think that’s asking too much. Yes, here, in this thread, I may lash out about other ships or characters, but even here I do try to point out the merits of that person/couple to balance it. I certainly wouldn’t lash out in other threads. Unfortunately, that’s not always reciprocated.
But whatevs! Because I think we’re getting a nice amount of CS without the writers/show going overboard (bias admitted!) I still think Belle’s way to simply & weakly written but I’ve always liked Rumple when the Dark One’s playing so I’m loving the idea of him doing something to Hook’s hand, because that’s what nasty-Rumple does! I hope the Hook scene calling Rumple out about the dagger and possible ‘retaliation’ by cursing Hook’s does set up some great conflict between the two.
Jenna_BParticipantI did really love the episode, but I have to agree with the comment (Surayya? Maybe it was yours?) that I think I would’ve rather been spoiled by the kiss, for more impact.
“Dairy Queen” – I almost died when Emma called the Snow Queen that. I can’t decide how I feel about the Snow Queen yet. I’m not really a huge Elizabeth Mitchell fan, I admit…I did like her in the season or so of Lost I watched that she was in, but I really did not like her character on Revolution so that might be it. I am very curious to see where they go with her, though. And I still am loving the Frozen addition, much more than I thought I would.
I also liked Killian & Elsa’s interaction. I think they’d make good friends even if it weren’t for Emma. I think they played off each other quite well when Elsa said she wasn’t going to sit around the sheriff’s station and Killian’s response was pretty much “well, DUH”. I can see Emma being very protective of both of them, since having a functional romantic relationship AND friendship are both new to her – and the two of them essentially patting her on the head and doing what they feel they must to keep Emma safe and protected.
I never watched OUAT in WL so I don’t really know what to expect from Will – other than what I’ve seen in gifsets! 🙂 but I loooooved him! I still have no clue what he’s doing in SB but I have a feeling I’m going to enjoy his presence.
The promo – SQUEE!!! I agree – I loved Emma’s outfit. It was really is probably her 1st real date – breaking into an amusement park aside – and it’s definitely Killian’s 1st date in this realm – so I love their clothing choices. It’s a great way to visually show that each of them wants to make a good impression on the other, even though they already know so much about the other. And they probably both do feel a little like they’re going back in time, and finally getting to experience the ‘normal’ things they missed out during their teenage years/20s. (or, 300s if you’re the pirate!) The point of course, being that these two people had to grow up so very fast and so very young – the clothes just allow the audience to see all of that without having to spend 20 minutes expressing those feelings verbally.
Ok, time to get the child to bed! Somehow he managed to get me to allow him to stay up an extra 1/2 hour again…!!
Jenna_BParticipantHappy OUAT Day everyone!! Just a few more hours!
I’m trying to catch up on the last few pages, it’s been a busy week — I’m looking forward to seeing Hook and Rumple’s interaction. I agree with those who said, essentially, Rumple is his own worst enemy. I really don’t think there’s anything anyone – not just Hook – can do that’s worse and more threatening to RumBelle than Rumple himself. Relationships are built on trust – Belle understands that and trusts Rumple (at times, to a fault) but Rumple still hasn’t learned that very basic lesson. I’m guessing that’s a big part of what they have coming up for the RumBelle storyline this season. I think it would be interesting if they have Rumple bond with Henry, and because of Rumple’s relationship with Henry, and Hook’s relationship with Emma/Henry, they find themselves working on the same side – much to their chagrin, initially. So I think while some of their story might include Hook finding out about the dagger and using it as blackmail or whatnot, the core of their story is going to be that they each have to put their past animosity toward each other in the past, in order to preserve the happiness they have in the present.
In regard to Hook being killed off or Colin leaving – not even a hint of concern for me – it’s not happening. As mentioned, A&E have been vocal about wanting Hook – not just Peter Pan, but Hook specifically – in S1 but were still working on obtaining the rights. Although it might not seem it if you listen to the anti-Hook/CSers, CS is a very popular ship with the general audience – and ultimately, it doesn’t matter if you watch 500x during the week and obsess (like us?! Nah!) or if you just tune in every Sunday at 8, then don’t give it a thought – every set of eyeballs count to the network, and many of those eyeballs enjoy our pirate and ‘ship. Neal/MRJ is completely different than Hook/Colin. I do also believe that whatever plans they had for Neal/MRJ, it just didn’t come together, for whatever reason. This left MRJ with very little screentime, while giving him enough exposure to get others interesting in having him in other projects – which he couldn’t commit to because of OUAT. The History channel project sounds very interesting (they’ve been putting out some great scripted programming in the last few years) and he’s got a bunch of other projects he’s working on and coming up. So really, it wasn’t worth it for him to stay in a role that gave him little screentime and wasn’t living up to expectations.
Jenna_BParticipantI used to get upset about the hate but now I (mostly) just let it roll off my back. I think because most of the valid arguments against Hook/Emma and/or CS have been blown out of the water. And the whole Hook and rape culture thing – I don’t even want to go there. I think it’s just completely insulting to actual victims to use a vicious, horrid crime for their tv watching agenda. Actually, I don’t know if insulting is really a strong enough word! Anyhow, back to my original thought – most of what the haters come up with is just so out there or stretched or contorted cannon it’s hilarious.
I have to do my rewatch! I haven’t broken my DVR yet watching the scenes of Hook holding Emma in the loft yet…I’m super impressed by that little box! I’m preparing myself in advance for the feels this Sunday because I definitely was NOT prepared last week!
Jenna_BParticipantHaha, Nemo! Baby Neal is officially Nemo!
RGF – awesome thoughts! I, too, loved when Emma held his head but I didn’t even really see it in that context until you pointed it out — I just saw it as the ‘Charming Family Hug,’ which in itself gave me feels to no end, but I love the next level that you brought up.
The hand holding thing just gets me with every rewatch and gifset! I love how they purposely did a close of up that action – that’s how important it was. You didn’t even need to see Hook’s face to know when Emma first moved her hand that he thought she was going to drop it, pull away – but she didn’t, she grabbed on tighter. The looks of utter adoration he gives her from then on just reinforce how that one little action on Emma’s part means the world to him. Feeeeeels! 🙂
Unfortunately…yes, I think a lot of folks have run for the hills, unfortunately. I have to say, I’m not surprised. I’ve mentioned before I used to go into many of the threads but now stick pretty much to this one or some of the least controversial threads. I actually read and posted in the Most/Least Favorite threads for 4×1 & 4×2…but even there, Hook/CS was the giant elephant in the room. But I think a big part of the problem here and elsewhere isn’t in regard to ships, directly. It’s that some people are loving the season (and we can admit it, are spoiled!) whereas others seem to feel the writing has gone downhill. And that divide is getting bigger and bigger. There are those of us that know there’s plotholes and loopholes galore but enjoy the fun the show offers, while others are getting frustrated with those loopholes and plotholes not being addressed as time goes on. Neither group is right or wrong, but it gets increasingly difficult to debate when the problem comes down to how you’re watching the show.
Jenna_BParticipantThe powers that be already said the show’s safe unless something really drastic happens. It’s returned with very strong numbers, so it has a nice cushion before it’s future becomes worrisome. And OUAT holds its own when you think about the fact that it’s up against Sunday Night Football. Yes, OUAT and football are nothing alike, but football draws a lot of American eyes away from programming that would otherwise be watched by the household. Eyeballs are eyeballs – especially when they’re the oh-so-important youngin’ eyeballs advertisers want.
Jenna_BParticipantMy thought is she was only brought back during the second curse; she was off doing whatever those that weren’t caught up in the first curse were doing. I think she’s just emerging now because she’s got her sights on Emma, though, not Elsa. Emma’s powers are strong and everyone is realizing as time goes on just how much raw power Emma has inside her. It seems Elsa & the Ice Queen’s powers are rather limited – I mean, you can only do so much with ice walls and monsters – but Emma’s powers don’t seem particularly limited. Imaging already being quite powerful but getting your hands on even stronger and more varied power. She may have also just realized from Zelena’s silly kissy curse that Emma’s powers can be taken from her…so she’s got Elsa in town, the perfect scapegoat for anything the Ice Queen starts to do….she’s realized she can find the means to strip Emma of her magic…it’s perfect timing for whatever she’s got in store.
