For those watching here for updates, the timeline is now updated through 317 on the site and through 319 on my spreadsheet.

Hm, makes me think of Sofia the First actually. Sofia makes friends with a little witch in one episode; in another episode, it’s revealed that her mother is an unapologetic witch who really likes hexing people, and that’s where Lucinda got it from. Mind you, her “evilness” is basically bullying and tricking people in mean ways; she’s a little kid, after all.

But, inspired by Sofia of course, she decides she’d prefer to have friends, so she tries to be a good little witch.

Well, there’s a lot of rabid love for Regina, who killed her own parents, and her husband, and tried multiple times to kill one of her (step)children…

Along with entire villages along the way. And random guards. And her boyfriend/sex slave.

If people can find her a sympathetic character (ditto Rumple), I should think that, given a good storyline and character depth, we could still love a truly villainous princess.

I’m not sure it could happen for a “family audience” though. Elsa may be the closest we can get if it’s at all deemed “for children.” (I would argue that Disney animation is NOT just for kids in any way, but since that is a major part of the audience that they have to consider, along with parents who will freak out over every little thing…it’s a relevant consideration.)

I agree, there’s TONS of interesting stories out there they could mine for princesses that represent a much wider base than they’ve already got, but my point was that each princess really is an individual with her own story and background–they’re not one story retold over and over. And it’s that assumption that rubs me the wrong way and makes me go, wait, am I the only one who watched these movies? sometimes. And while there are a LOT of cultures not represented (by which I mean more than ethnicity, but that too) yet in the Disney lineup, there are still quite a lot represented within the 13 current Disney Princess line. (And far more if you go to the Disney universe in general.)

That is possible…I need to go back to 313 or so and see how long it’s been, but it seems like they’re still puzzling out the new curse at that point–as though they’ve only been back a few days or so.

And yeah, logically Belle and Neal would have to go post 314…except that the captions explicitly say 9 months in 314 and 1 year in 315, and then 8 months in 319.

Which means, barring other really good evidence, I’m not sure what to do except chalk her appearance in 314 up to random fluke/mistake and just put stuff where the captions say.

You mean like Mulan? (Who saved all of China as a warrior in an actual war, only incidentally falls in love and doesn’t even kiss the guy in the initial film, and was celebrated for her brains, dressed as a man partly because she didn’t fit into her culture’s female mold, and incidentally was not white?)

Or Pocahontas, whose love story in the film was with the guy she doesn’t even end up with (by her own choice in the film to stay and lead her people), is also not white, and manages to STOP a war through her bravery.

Or Tiana, whose dreams of opening a restaurant totally trump everything else in her life, even when she DOES marry a prince? Oh, and she’s not white either. Hm.

Jasmine, who fights to at least have a choice in her marriage if she has to marry (and isn’t white…) (and was the 6th “official” Disney Princess, her movie arriving in 1992, but granted, the first of non-European appearance.)

Merida, who is white, but doesn’t fall in love at ALL and has better fighting skills than any man in Scotland?

Or maybe Elsa, who has no love interest at all even offered in the film, and who maybe doesn’t go full-on evil but comes dang close to destroying her kingdom, killing intruders, and oh yeah, killing her own sister.

Or even Belle, who is white and does find her adventure while falling in love…but who is also the hero of her own story. She certainly isn’t just waiting around for a Prince Charming.

Even if we limit ourselves just to the classic three princesses (1937, 1950, and 1959–Snow White, Cinderella, and Aurora), Aurora’s the only one who really falls into the pure trap of the stereotype. And to be fair…Phillip is pretty much a puppet both good and evil fairies are using to win the day (he doesn’t even talk ONCE after he’s captured in the middle of the film…meaning he’s as silent as Aurora is–honestly, the film’s about the fairies, not them, and they’re all fascinating, powerful female characters).

Sorry. You hit a nerve. That stereotype bugs the heck out of me.

Incidentally, are you sure your sister is watching a Disney film? There are a lot of non-Disney princesses running around out there (including about a dozen princess films starring Barbie, some better than others).

So to spite Eddy, I added a column to calculate the day of the week on my spreadsheet. Obviously, with all the fudging they do and the rough estimates that are necessary to construct the thing, there are only a few dates that I trust to be 100% accurate despite the care I’ve taken.

However, they did commit to several very particular dates.

Emma’s birth & the curse: October 22nd, 1983: Saturday. (Makes sense that Owen & his dad were camping then; score one for A&E.)

Day 1 of the curse: October 23rd, 1983: Sunday.

Emma’s return to Storybrooke: October 22nd, 2011: Also, interestingly, a Saturday. Given the mayor’s usual Saturday routine (at that time, hanging with Graham), we can see how Henry got away so easily. …though it does seem odd that Henry then is supposed to go to school on a Sunday, but hey, time’s been frozen? Cuz the 23rd is Sunday. Time doesn’t start moving again until Emma takes a hotel room that night.

Hm, the “Saturday” when she meets with Graham I currently have as a Friday by the date. Might need to adjust some things if it’s possible to do so…unless (and this is remotely possible) Emma’s birthday should really be the 23rd and people are reading yesterday’s paper in the Welcome to Storybrooke flashback.

ANYWAY: Our next and only real concrete date:

Valentine’s day 2012: Tuesday. Obviously the dates immediately surrounding it are clear in relation.

Then the timeline gets pretty tight–almost day by day from then to where we are now, save for the missing year (which might be only 9 months long)–but again, since they play fast and loose, no guarantees.

Anyway, yes, Eddy, some of us ARE wondering whether it’s Thursday.

So I have found a small issue in the timeline for S3B, one I knew was there but haven’t worked out how to resolve it.

It’s captioned One Year Ago when Belle and Neal are at the Dark Castle looking for a way to revive Rumple in 315. It’s also captioned 9 months ago when Snow tells David they’re pregnant…right before he saves Rapunzel in 314. Belle’s at the reunion ball when Rapunzel comes home. BUT, Belle comes to report what happened to Neal/Rumple with captions that suggest it’s 8 months ago, and clearly after Snow knows she’s pregnant, in 319.

I’m really not sure how to resolve this on my timeline; obviously, A&E can’t tell time (and Eddy’s recently suggested nobody should be watching as carefully as we obviously do), but there’s a definite contradiction there until 9 months = a year and the events of 315 take place after the events of 314.

David actually said HE was the Sheriff in 317 when he’s reassuring MM about giving Henry a driving lesson. So I think he assumed that post (again) when Emma wasn’t there after they came back. Maybe they have two sheriffs? He did act as acting sheriff when she was in the EF with MM in S2, too.

Either regrouping, pondering about Zelena, and making LOTS of tacos…

Or those 2-3 months never actually happened. We do talk about a 9-month school year as “a year” so I can almost let A&E get away with this one. I do think at least 10 months believably happened, and obviously they didn’t do a whole lot that was worth seeing for most of Snow’s pregnancy. So…use your imagination, read some fanfics, fill it in? I dunno.
