Neal was surprised that Emma was magical, and Snow and Charming’s reactions to it suggest that it’s somewhat unusual. Regina’s claim that she and Rumple are the most powerful magic users ever is also interesting in this equation.
OTH, we’ve seen Cora and Jafar pick it up just out of a desire for revenge, because they wanted to. We’ve also seen Rumple able to pick up a new apprentice within days or hours of dumping Regina.
But we’ve also seen tons of examples of people who presumably aren’t magical (as Neal put it) using magic prepared by Rumple (mainly Rumple) for various purposes: Charming uses a potion to find Jefferson, Snow used the squid ink, and the dwarves were able to use BF’s cure potion. Robin Hood was able to use a magic wand.
And then there’s TL magic which seems to be in its own class: TL kiss is the main activator here, but it seems to have other effects in at least some couples (like Charming feeling pain when Snow ate the apple).
I’ve also got some theories about the colors of magic, though I don’t think they’re fully consistent. Rumple’s magic is usually purple, as is Regina’s, so in my head that’s linked with dark magic, but sometimes (as when he vanishes from Hook’s ship in 204) Rumple’s magic is red, black (as when he took the sheriff’s tongue in 219)…or even blue. BF’s magic is almost always blue, and we’ve seen a few other instances of blue magic–curing, fixing chip, and so on, that make me think that blue magic might be “good” or “light” magic.
But then there’s Belle’s magic. And it’s not entirely true that she’s never used it before 307: She used fairy dust to bring Phillip back, though that might not qualify as a spell. She also used TLK to almost bring Rumple back. I need to go back and look at colors for the Phillip incident, but anyway, in 307 her magic is…Gold. And I love this. I love it to bits. It makes me squee and bounce and dance and hop around when I think about it. I’m trying to think when/if we’ve seen gold magic elsewhere, and I’m not sure if we have. But the two times that she activates a spell here, once with the potion in the mines, and once with the teacup joining its saucer (awwwwww symbolism yeah), the magic is gold. Both times one could argue that she’s simply activating magic triggers that Rumple set up (like the Charmings using his potions), but it seems…special, especially in light of the way she and Blue phrased things in the mine, with belief involved.
And it does seem more like Neal’s “blood magic,” which I hope we see more of, than anything else. Like he has magic not because it’s inherent, as Emma’s is, but because of the relationship (love?) between him and his father. So does Belle have magic because of TL with a magical person? Or is it TL magic itself at work?
There is her “superpower” too…she and Emma are the only ones who have made claims that are generally validated, both in the shows and by the writers/actors, to having some kind of sense about people beyond the ordinary. (Though the TL thing between Snowing seems to be similarly supernatural.) Emma’s definitely got magic. What does that mean for Belle?

Rewatched 307 (cuz I <3 this ep so much, I'm still an ep behind on timelining and need to do Wonderland)...
When they were in Dark Hollow, Neal's calling out to Emma and yelling for her to just leave them and get to safety when his shadow's being ripped from his body. He's just concerned about her--and the one thing she cares about, Henry.
And later he's the one to apologize for being childish with the lighter; his taking her aside parallels Hook's doing so, but he does it only to say that Henry's awesome and worth being their sole focus and even that if she doesn't choose him, it's okay.
Nealfire's so sweet and self-sacrificing and wonderful. Oh, and, as Mulan and Charming (in this ep!) have pointed out...Love is Sacrifice.

Oh you just broke my heart 🙁 Neal just can’t catch a break at all. And I think right now the only thing he really feels went right in his life is Henry (an emotion shared by Henry’s two moms, too, incidentally). And he’s gonna find out about Wendy if he doesn’t already know (and I don’t think he does) and it’s gonna be even more awful.
*hugs Neal tightly* He needs Rumbelle hugs…Belle could help make it all better. And then Emma & Henry hugs too.

Hm. I was thinking it should go with Belle though it’s really both of their magic–he set it but she activates it both times (the potion and the cup). And I think “Belle’s Gold magic” flows better, doesn’t it?

So when Rumple was like, “Jealous?” at Regina I was like, shut up you cruel imp, you totes used the fact that Regina was lonely to your advantage even if she DOES deserve a bit of gloating after torturing you with Belle so much, but this is only going to lead to her doing it AGAIN. (And you um, let her live? Yay?) Though that was fresh after seeing Regina choke VisionBelle to death…
But still, it was so adorable…because it’s like he realizes what a treasure he’s got in Belle. He doesn’t take her for granted at all. He -brags- about her.
