Yeah, he’s had three centuries to learn how people work. He reads people like a book–look at how quickly he taps into what makes Emma run in S1, and then surmises her feelings regarding Nealfire in S2. He’s good at it, and I think that’s experience rather than seeing abilities. He was always intelligent, too, but I think it’s having a chance to test people and experiment on them for a couple centuries that’s made him so good at predicting their behaviors.

My headcanon is that he was constantly looking for other ways to get to Bae. And that’s why I think if he was in NL before, it was in pursuit of Bae. After all, once he had the seer’s power, he knew at least some of the things that had to come to pass before The Curse–Cora’s having a daughter, Snow White being involved. We don’t know just how detailed his knowledge was beyond what the Seer and BF told him and the little hints of what he was setting up, but it was a lot of work (and some of it rather cruel work–I do think at times he’s felt sorry for what he had to do to certain people, including Regina). If there was a shortcut, Rumple would totally take it.

Which begs the question: Why did Rumple want to come to our world (assuming that’s the world he spoke of–a world without magic, and we know from Oz lore that the slippers lead to “our” world, so it’s strongly suggested they’re the same) a good two-three decades before Bae would show up, without the Curse to keep him ageless?

Well, we know he wasn’t depending on The Curse alone to get to Bae. He knew that was going to happen and yet he still hired Jefferson to get the slippers.

…and now I’m wondering if there’s a link in the timeline to when Bae left Neverland. But that would make him much older…argh.

(because that scene happened somewhere near the time Regina married Leopold, which makes it around 15 years before the curse. What scant evidence we have suggests that Bae would have had to come to our world after the curse, possibly in 1991–if the birthdate he apparently claimed of 1977 was remotely close to his physical age.)

Well, Rumple and Felix both say that Pan has the ability to kill Rumple. “We both know that I won’t [survive].”

That means Pan has some power over the Dark One.

Rumple was putting on such a show for Felix though. He did the gestures like he was mocking himself (I think Neal really got through to him), but he was being The Dark One for Felix’s benefit. That suggests that he was in Neverland as an adult, as the Dark One.

I’m convinced now that the doll was Bae’s while Bae was in Neverland, and that Rumple came there but Pan kept him from taking Bae back. And that might flow into the whole “my son has been running for a long time” concept from Manhattan. Maybe the doll is the catalyst that kept them apart back then?
