I really enjoyed this one. It had an S1 vibe about it…maybe because Snow was the focus again.
Liked:
–OMG the outfits for Snow and Regina.
–Baby Snow. Bailee is impossibly good at capturing Ginnie’s portrayal of Snow White–they are seamless and beyond the uncanny appearance, it’s down to Bailee’s hard work as a young actress. She nails every emotional expression perfectly.
–Early Evil Queening. Love it. Fills in a nice hole on the timeline.
–Herc. I actually liked him. And I am so glad they gave him and Baby Snow an adorable puppy-love romance, even if it took away from the Meg relationship.
–That bandit dude…he’s the same one Regina kills years later, isn’t he? Mmm continuity even if it’s just ep to ep is nice.
–The author plot resurrection. I have qualms with it but I love the focus on Henry and I love that it’s not just over because he snapped the quill. Also Cruella is Devillishly fun to watch at work. (And gin.)
–Hades continues to be wonderful. Not sure they could’ve picked a better actor for the part.Disliked:
–Tortured Hook. There doesn’t seem to be much cause for it before the heroes start making trouble, so…I dunno, confused. Also I like Hook and it’s hard seeing him all bloodied up like that.
–Meg. She was a bit of a disappointment after the Disney version…and about as flat and pointless a character as can be. The whole episode could have worked without her, almost. It would’ve worked for me if the damsel in distress thing had been an act…but they didn’t really give themselves time to play with that, since apparently that’s all we get of Herc.
–No Rumple and No Belle. It was a pretty solid ep overall despite their absence, but… (I am SO looking forward to next week when Rumple gets to play with Hades!)[adrotate group="5"]Keeper of Belle's Gold magic, sand dollar, cloaks, purple FTL outfit, spell scroll, library key, copy of Romeo and Juliet, and cry-muffling pillow, Rumple's doll, overcoat, and strength, and The Timeline. KebParticipantOpinions: Cora returned 3 times (so far) to the Enchanted Forest after her banishment to Wonderland.
We know that when Hook brought her back in 209, that was the last time, as Regina believed her dead at that point and the curse was cast shortly after.
In 420, Mother, Cora uses the rabbit and comes back on the anniversary of Daniel’s death. She briefly greets Henry Sr in that ep, which means he’s in the Enchanted Forest (so it can’t be between 512 & 117’s flashbacks). That’s the ep where Regina drinks the potion rendering her infertile. Right now, I have that on the anniversary in 1980, about half a year before Rumple goes Robin Hood hunting…but that places it before the apple, which is in 1981, and shown in the “previously” clips. I think I initially chose to put it where it is despite that because of clues relating to Robin Hood (like, in 1981, he’d have a kid already…)
In 512, Cora returns through the mirror, a portal that Regina seals off after sending her (and her father) back to Wonderland. Given a number of clues there’s only one date that I think works for that, Feb. 1st, 1982, putting it a year and a half before the Curse.
I’m trying to decide whether 420 should come after 117, or be moved to be after the apple but still before 512.

KebParticipantSo excited to see Bailee again. She is such a perfect Young Snow. If only they could keep the kids young forever…

KebParticipantBeen adding the episodes from Out of the Past (the Marvel Comic) and will get to Shadow of the Queen at some point. Found an inconsistency that will have to be swayed in favor of the show’s portrayal…Jefferson and Priscilla met in Camelot, in a castle, before Grace’s birth, and Grace seems to be about Henry’s age when the curse is broken…which places their meeting 9-12 years before the Curse was cast (given at least 9 months for a baby and putting her age within 2 years of Henry’s afterward).
Unfortunately, Camelot’s castle came into being only about 3 years before the Curse, when Guinevere traded Rumple the gauntlet for the sands of Avalon and Arthur used them to fix Camelot. The timing of that is pretty much confirmed by the link of the gauntlet to Belle’s time in the Dark Castle, plus the captions.
No way to really rectify it except to say eh, maybe Camelot had another castle lying around at some point where some rich people lived, I guess.
It’s a minor thing, especially as most viewers probably will never read the comics (though they’re gorgeous!). So, show trumps comic.

KebParticipantNeal is part of the warp of the fabric of this show. You pull him out, it unravels.
This isn’t saying they’ll bring him back, just that there’s no escaping, no matter what they try, how important he is to the members of the family the show focuses upon. And the baity titles just go along with that.

March 8, 2016 at 3:35 pm in reply to: FAVORITE AND LEAST FAVORITE MOMENTS IN 5×12 Souls of the Departed #318473KebParticipant…I’m now longing for a flashback to Rumple’s previous time there. And maybe the moment when he was summoned back to the land of the living.

Hook has relationships with everyone, but only his relationship with Emma is one that anyone would go to the underworld to save him for. What we’ve been shown on screen is Henry’s having mixed feelings about Emma dating Hook but enjoying Hook’s lessons in piracy, Regina having a normal covillain animosity toward Hook, Robin having…done stuff with Hook cuz he was there, the Charmings tolerating Hook for Emma’s sake, and Gold loathing Hook passionately with the feeling entirely mutual. Belle actually became friends with Hook while they were working to free the fairies, but when they decided to make her almost entirely OOC for the last three eps of 5A, they kinda dropped the friendship, too. None of them save Emma has a truly positive connection to Hook and half don’t really have a relationship that’s been developed on screen. Which is actually strange considering Hook has one of the highest screentimes out of the regulars.

March 8, 2016 at 12:13 pm in reply to: FAVORITE AND LEAST FAVORITE MOMENTS IN 5×12 Souls of the Departed #318414KebParticipantSo far the best reason they’ve given for everyone to go is “We’re supporting Emma,” save for Gold, who is there because blackmail (and also his blood yadda yadda).
It would have been different had this plotline been done to save Neal at the end of S3 as I had hoped back then. Regina would have come to support Henry, and Henry & Rumple would have come for their own connections to Neal. Robin and the Charmings STILL have kids they should be caring for and almost zero cause to seek either of Emma’s loves (except to support Emma/Regina), but whatever. Actually, after Emma, Belle has the best relationship with Hook at this point out of the whole group and she got left behind (and she also had a good relationship with Neal going, so…). So whatever. Some logic got thrown under the bus to make this plot work.

KebParticipantWell, on the timeline I’m still going with the storm being the wraith in my mind, but I’m open to other possibilities.
I still hope they will wrap up Will’s story somehow. They could have used him better, but they chose not to. His moments on the show (even if I was going WTH about pairing him with Belle and messing with two beloved ships) were still good moments, and he was amazing in Wonderland.
It was a mistake to bring him onto the main show without a better plan for his inclusion. I’m glad he’s able to talk about it and I can’t blame him for being frustrated. I agree that it’s difficult to balance the sheer number of storylines they’re trying to balance, but it doesn’t help when they drop one to seize the next shiny one without finding a way to conclude the first or incorporate it. We’re still waiting on the outright promised tale of Mulan/Aurora/Phillip, and more of Red and Whale (who are now cameos at best, though at least Red has a chance to have more of her story told), and Lily’s search for her father, and…
They do a wonderful job of making us care about these characters. They pick talented, beautiful actors who inspire feelings in us. To just abandon them is cruel to the actors and audience alike, and it’s happened far too often in this show. I’m not sure which is worse, really, between dropping a character entirely (in such a way they can be brought back easily) or underusing a character the way they do Belle and did with Red, Will, and quite a few others. But Socha has very valid points about how underusing the actor affects his real life. It’s hard to hold onto the passion you have for the project if you’re not allowed to be involved.

KebParticipantOne question to think about:
Let’s say that Emma’s plan to split her heart to save Hook works. Hook still needs replacing. Who is going to replace Hook? For every soul that is brought back to the land(s) of the living from the Underworld (or saved from it’s fate of entering the Underworld), another person must die. Will Rumple sacrifice himself , taking all of the Dark One’s curse with him?
I think the logic here is that the cost of the Curse was killing the thing you love most. The loophole was, you could pay the cost then split a heart to revive the price. Well, Hook’s already paid the price–he’s dead. Emma wants to enact the loophole by bringing him back with half of her heart.
Why that requires going to the Underworld is the confusing part. And yes, you get into the issue of soul math which is different from price math.
