I think part of the Dark One’s manipulation of…well, itself is that it focuses on there being only ONE solution to a problem. No other solution can exist–we have to kill, we have to do the horrible things. It’ll jump to another solution later, but it blinds its host to other possibilities, to hope.

Just let Belle take care of them if she’s going to be relegated to babysitting anyway. She was being protective of Henry and Roland throughout the episode, even though it was in the background. And between her having saved Roland’s life before he was even born and being Henry’s other other grandma…

It was dark (but very early morning) when Rumple stabbed Zoso. When he gets back to Bae, it’s early morning. Given his desperation, which Zoso was preying upon, Rumple was an easy target for the kind of thinking the Dark One instills–like most Dark Ones before Emma, he’d already persuaded himself that becoming the Dark One through murder was the only way to solve his problem to begin with.

So I could believe that an hour or so to ooze out of the vault, figure out how to manipulate space to get back to Bae…could be enough.

(Of course, they’ve proven enough times they don’t care to be completely consistent or make the timeline make much sense–those beans grow pretty much overnight in Storybrooke despite taking a century in FTL–so who knows when they came up with all this.)

I do think the way in which Emma perceives the Dark One within her does mesh with Rumple’s outer behavior as we saw throughout S4 (where Rumple was definitely not succeeding as well at controlling the darker impulses as in the past when he had the system of Deals, which, after Zelena’s cruelty & Neal’s death he mostly abandons, and that I’ve always believed he relied upon to control himself), as well as earlier moments like when he toyed with the idea of killing Henry. It’s very easy for me to imagine his having a conversation in his head about whether or not to do it that parallels what we saw with Emma last night, even as he is slowly unraveling the swing’s rope.

One more opportunity lost by killing off Neal, though: He could have contrasted Emma’s transformation with his father’s.

Ah well. This show is wonderful but it’s an Oregon trail left littered with the graves of lost opportunities to reach its full potential.

In at least one version, Nimue tricks Merlin (who has been lusting after her for ages and following her around) into teaching her a bit of magic. Then she traps him either in a cave under some rocks or inside a tree using the magic (it varies, as do most tales that old).

I was annoyed that they chopped up the Sword in the Stone so much and it didn’t make sense with Little Emma’s entering etc. Not the best Disney movie ever but it has its moments.

Cruella was fascinating in that for once they actually did present a true sociopath on the show. I’m not convinced that means “pure evil”–Isaac says at her funeral that she was good to him in her way, which I think meant that she was able to pull him out of his shell for a bit. But while we’ve seen most of our major villains go through traumas and experiences that explain their evil choices, Cruella started out with no empathy, a desire to watch people die, and an ability to charm and manipulate people–all the definition of sociopathic. Makes it easier to distinguish from, say, Rumple’s behavior which sometimes looks similar (because he has always been ends justify means, but he definitely also harbors love, a desire to accomplish good things as he sees them, and even sympathy for some of his victims).

I’m excited. I hope we see her brothers. I hope the rumors of an adventure with Belle happen. I was sad to learn her father was gone; I like him 🙁 I really enjoyed her in today’s episode.

And I laughed so hard when they had Rumple tease about her accent, especially after struggling to make out some of Bobby’s speech when he’s OOC.

Favorites while still processing all this:
–The Beauty and the Beast Rose (but why didn’t she make it more portable? BUT OMG OMG OMG)
–The dagger/Excaliber connection. Blew my mind.
–Belle’s green dress.
–Zelena’s blue dress.
–Merida everything.
–WISPS!!!
–RumpleDO pulling at Emma–well done, creepy, and effective–and shows some of what Rumple must have gone through in his transformation. The way the demons convince you there’s no way out, or no other way.
–Emma catching Merida’s arrows. It was fun to watch.
–Poor Kay. But it was well done.
–Learning Nurse Ratchet (Ratched?)’s name finally after years of just writing “Severe Nurse” like in the credits.

Least favorite:
–Plot hole with the heart pulling potion. I like continuity, even if it’s tenuous…but that annoyed slightly.
–Robin kissing Zelena again…squicky.
–Belle only having two lines…but at least she was in most of the group shots for once.
–The six week time jump at the end with amnesia…again…? wha?
–Also teasing us with Camelot and giving us not much, but that’s clearly intentional to get us to come back next week so I get it.
