Their friends, maybe. Emma and the Charmings? Their lives and families are constantly in danger. Oh, and Neal? Dead. Belle? Forced to hurt the person she loves most, send him away from her “forever” (we know he will come back, but she doesn’t believe it’s possible), and watch him suffering afraid on the other side of the line.

I think what they’ve set up is for his goal to be to get Belle and his power back, just as his goal before was to get Bae back. Trying to recapture some of the dynamic that worked for him before.

But poor Belle. And nobody comforting her. Again.

It’s interesting that he doesn’t delve more into the similarities between Hook & Rumple because I swear I’ve seen him playing out Hook’s awareness of that this season. Of course, he’s a month ahead of us on where Hook’s mind is.

But mostly I’m giggling because Hook is a CODfish. Yes, I’m a child.

I think that while Rumple is getting sadistic pleasure from torturing Hook, he’s also got no real interest in hurting Emma or anyone else (besides the fairies & the apprentice, whom he already hated) unless it furthers his plans (or keeps them from interfering with them). He only tried to put Emma in the hat because she pretty much begged him to and he couldn’t pass up the opportunity. And, like I said, he’s shown a teensy bit of compassion to his puppet a couple of times–giving him the freedom to go off and kiss Emma goodbye before the spell of shattered sight set in, and reassuring him that Emma & Storybrooke would be relatively safe from All Powerful Rumple. He has no reason at all to be even that generous to Hook, as he pointed out, but the human bit of him (and the bit that remembers how Zelena treated him) gives Hook that tiny bit of compassion.

I don’t think that’s why he doesn’t make Hook hat Emma; I think that’s for the twin reasons that he doesn’t really want to hurt Emma and that allowing the Snow Queen’s plan to go through (for which she wanted Emma) gave him cover to go through with his plan and come out smelling like roses to the people he cares about. So that’s out of consideration for Emma/his idea of protecting Belle & Henry (which involves their believing the best about him).

Adds an extra note of cruelty to how Rumple is treating Hook if he has that ability…on the other hand, he has zero reason to treat Hook kindly (unless it were to prove he’s the better man, which he doesn’t care about right now) and DID still reassure him that Emma and Storybrooke would be safe if they didn’t get in his way. I think that’s the human bit left in him.
