Depending on what his actual goal IS, I think Rumple -would- still be pursuing the hat’s power with Neal there. I’m not sure he would have given the dagger to Belle in that case, though. His loyalties would be a little more divided between the two of them and he’d get away with less, cuz Neal sees right through him where Belle’s willing to believe in him.

But being free of the dagger? That’s what Baelfire wanted, too–he wanted his father back. If losing the dagger’s power over him might free him from the darkness (but still let him keep the power) (I don’t think so but Rumple might) (and Neal might believe that too, dunno), then Neal might even support that.

Actually, with the time travelling and the timing we’ve been shown relative to Skin Deep, Elsa skipped about 4-5 years to get to the present. And she could not have been in the urn for more than a few weeks, a couple months at most.

I have a theory that Ingrid got out of the urn at least once in the intervening 2 decades from when she was bottled, though. That would explain more history between her and Rumple, among other things.

At any rate, she definitely was free–and freer than most of the EF population–during the curse years.

See, I saw her retreat to the bug as a SF moment too…that’s HOME for her. And it’s her ice castle.

It basically created a situation where Marian was missing & presumed dead for the intervening 4-5 years that Robin lived, and then returned alive and well (and remarkably youthful!).

I’ve been suspecting she planted the hat for a while, even before we knew she had it. They still haven’t revealed whether there’s a reason Belle found that particular house or who it should belong to. I’m hoping they don’t drop that loose end because I think it may tie together what’s going on between DQ and Rumple.

I think the Emma’s magic is becoming uncontrollable is a bit convenient, but here are some consistencies:

    1. It’s never been predictable. Those times when she had guidance from Rumple or Regina, she was able to do more than she could do on her own. It HAS popped up when she was in seriously emotional situations (the first she’s been aware of being when she blocked Cora from taking her mother’s heart). She’s struggled to control it–in Dark Hollow, she had to work hard just to light a candle. That bit feels very consistent with what they’re doing–as we saw with Regina, Emma’s magic is coming more easily to her now because she’s had some training, as well as because her emotions are all over the place.

    2. Snow (along with Charming) has alternated between being concerned and supportive when it comes to Emma’s learning magic. Part of that worry is based in not wanting her to turn into Regina or Cora, no doubt (Snow’s encounters with magical women have not been the most pleasant…). They expressed those doubts aloud in Dark Hollow, though otherwise, yes, there hasn’t been much negative said about Emma’s magic.

    3. You can completely love someone and still have an instinctive fear of them if something goes wrong. For example…our cat, whom I adored (and I love cats) once scratched me over the eye accidentally. My eye wasn’t injured, but it was close…and I had this visceral reaction to not only her but to my aunt’s cat later that week that took me some time to get over. I knew in my head that petting the cat wasn’t going to hurt me, but my body instinctively drew away from it, remembering how close I’d been to a serious injury. I think that’s what’s going on with Snow and her little princeling. Magic took Emma away from her, and already ripped the new baby out of her arms once. It’s completely understandable, even if unfair to Emma, that she’s expressing some instinctive fears of losing him–to anyone with magic, including Emma. I don’t think it conflicts at all with her love for her daughter.

    4. Emma’s reaction: She obviously loves her brother and her parents but in almost any family relationship there are going to be sore sticking spots. That cat? In name, it was my little sister’s. Guess which sister was never given a pet cat despite asking for one her entire life. It comes up every now and then (now as more of a haha they love you more joke than anything else) even 13 years later. The baby is going to get different things from the Charmings because the situation is different, and Emma understands that. It doesn’t mean it doesn’t hurt, or that she has to feel that pain at particular times (though obviously DQ is a genius at playing her emotions like a harp). I’m buying it because it rings true to my experience of being a significantly older sister (okay, by 7 years and not 28, but still).

Oh, I don’t think that’s necessarily what Belle wants (though remember, they are both, so Lacey’s desires are not entirely in conflict with Belle’s). But if you’re Rumple right now and pretty confident things are going your way (save for your son being dead), you might well believe you CAN make it last forever. Unlike most people, he hast he ability, so he doesn’t have to dwell on the fear that he’ll outlive Belle.

They actually established that Rumple CAN make Belle younger as long as needed so she can live forever with him (as long as one of his many enemies doesn’t succeed in killing her first), back in Lacey when she asked. He’s also offered to make Smee & Bae younger again. So we know it’s possible; he doesn’t have to fear that bit.

As for Snow’s reaction, we’ve seen her be hesitant before about Emma’s learning her magic. She’s never been against Emma’s having magic–she loves her daughter as she is–but she’s never been entirely comfortable with it, either. And if it means putting her new infant son in the arms of someone who just proved her hands could boil milk…that’s scary. Especially for a woman who has had two sorceresses come for her children before.

6 and 1 are related and are really bugging me. Will’s advice, which in part followed the same pattern as we saw with Belle/Mulan’s beliefs about fighting for love and works for his own relationship a la Wonderland (assuming they haven’t completely obliterated that with whatever they did to get him on the show), is in its effect just AWFUL.

Marian inspired Robin Hood. What has Regina inspired in him? A belief in a second chance? But now he doesn’t need a second chance at love with her–he needs it with his wife. His story only made me feel more strongly that he belongs with Marian, and choosing Regina is The Wrong Choice. He as much as said it when he said he was throwing out his whole moral code to be with her.

You do NOT ruin your life and others’ lives to be with someone you think is hot. Even if you have a deep, awesome connection (a connection, mind you, that we’ve seen portrayed as mostly consisting of “we lost our first loves, so we can understand each other” and a dash of pixie dust). If the other person loved you, they wouldn’t WANT you to ruin your own life for them, no matter how it benefited them. And if you have to hurt other people to be with your love, you’re doing it wrong. That’s why Lacey was such a terrible thing for Rumbelle–she, unlike Belle, encouraged Rumple’s darker side. And the influence of that was that he strongly considered killing his own grandson.

No matter how much Roland likes Regina or Robin’s over Marian, OQ hurts both Roland and Marian by splitting up their family. And Marian’s done nothing wrong to deserve the man that from her perspective loved her only a few days ago–loved her so much he was willing to face the wrath of Rumplestiltskin–suddenly rejecting her just because he got the attention of a hot queen. She didn’t even have a choice in the matter of being brought back.

I honestly cannot see a way for Regina and Robin to be together at this point that I could accept. If you kill Marian or even have her acquiesce to Robin leaving her for Regina, that just reinforces Regina’s destructive belief that the only way she can have her happy ending is by taking happy endings away from other people (like, all the people caught up in her curse, Snow & Charming repeatedly, Rumplestilstkin when she kidnapped Belle as insurance, Hansel & Gretel & their father, Owen & Flynn, etc etc etc. She’s believed it for a very long time).

My only hope is that they’re going to have OQ crash and burn and Robin eventually realize he was better off with Marian and Regina realize that she’s become too good for a man who would dump his entire moral code to be with her.
