I think Belle was left to protect Storybrooke because she was the one person Rumple absolutely trusted. The dagger was left behind in Storybrooke as well and it would presumably be quite an attraction for the people who want to destroy magic: if they knew what Regina’s ‘failsafe’ was, it seems logical to think they’d know about the dagger. (It’s also possible that Ms de Ravin might have scheduling conflicts, as happened with the actors that played Aurora and Mulan.)
I do hope that the writers don’t just drop Storybrooke and the Enchanted Forest in S3: I’m still very much interested in the characters that got left behind: Belle, Ruby, Granny, Archie, August, Gipetto — and I want to see the Nova/Grumpy storyline continued or at least resolved. (I never did buy into the BF’s contention that Nova’s life wouldn’t have been worth living if she didn’t become a fairy godmother. I thought she was an interfering old bat who, for all her moralizing, had no qualms about manipulating people into doing what she thought was good for them.) Ntm I’d like to see what happened to Aurora, Mulan and Phillip — and dropping Baelfire/Neal would definitely lessen my interest.
All that said, my favourite moments were Belle coming back to herself — a lovely little ‘real love is other-directed’ instant — and Henry’s hugging Regina. Ms. de Ravin’s “You lost your son” and Ms. Parilla’s “I wish I was strong enough to stop this, but I’m just not” were both tone-perfect.

Dealing with a doppelganger created problems for Rumplestiltskin, just as Regina intended, but it wouldn’t be logical for actions taken as Lacey to create any major conflict in Belle, since she’d be aware that Lacey had simply been another way for Regina to imprison her. I think at some point she might take issue with Rumple about what he did in an attempt to win Lacey over, though: that would make sense. 🙂
Otoh, I also think it could have made an intriguing longer storyline if the differences between ‘Lacey’ and Belle hadn’t been so immediately obvious.
kellenParticipantA link back to the Darling children would be neat. And Tamara sharing Grandma Wendy’s hatred of magic would make sense. I can see that more easily than her hating magic because of its effects on Robin and Marian: it was magic that cured Marian and Robin used a magic bow, so unless there’s a story that hasn’t even been hinted at yet, there’s no reason to assume Robin or Marian hat any reason to hate magic.
kellenParticipantI’m obviously insane, because I’d like someone to open a portal to the past and bring back Daniel.(g) I thought that arc was done too quickly: he’s back, poof, he’s dust. Failing that, someone new. Swan/Queen could work in that they’re both strong female characters, but I never quite get past the idea that Regina’s Emma’s stepgrandmother, not her contemporary. Archie might be good for Regina, but I think he’s a bit too gentle for her: Regina’s pretty intense. (Although that could depend on the writing.) Hook just doesn’t seem to fit, either: he doesn’t seem anywhere near getting past losing Milah. For that matter, I’d like to see her portalled out of the past, even temporarily: her telling Rumple that she’d never loved him took some nerve and she’d obviously developed some self-awareness after becoming involved with Hook. Seems a shame to have let that all go to waste.

I will say this though, if I were Tamara, I would be scared out of my wits.
Yes, now that Tamara and Greg have angry Rumple, Regina and Emma hot on their heels, they had better watch out for magic being unleashed! Tamara deserves to go down for what she did, and Greg isn’t much better (though at least his anger is explained by Regina murdering his father).
Is it all that certain that Regina did murder his father? It seemed all he had to do was lift the leaves, et voila, skeleton. You’d think that was a pretty careless burial — and if Regina was still capable of speech, she was still capable of saying something just to mess with Greg’s mind.(g) Maybe at the last minute Greg discovers that Dad’s still alive? After all, there were quite a few doors in that hospital basement.(g)
kellenParticipantI think Rumple’s confused ‘show her the man she fell in love with’ with ‘make her fall in love with you again’, but from what we get so far, it’s also possible to wonder if he ever loved Belle at all. As long as he’s got Belle’s body around, he doesn’t seem to miss what made Belle different from the persona that Regina created — or even notice the differences. Belle wanted him to just take the shawl and go; Lacey found his beating someone amusing, but he’s good with that because she looks like Belle? (For that matter, he doesn’t seem to care that he’s alienating the son he was supposedly so determined to find.) Then again, it isnt the first time he hasn’t stopped to think: it apparently never once occurred to him to find out if Regina was telling the truth about Belle’s death. I could have loved seeing him teaching amnesiac Belle to love him again, but having him just turn oblivious to Belle and Baefire over someone who’s sadistic and stupid as well? Sts, but the writers will have to have something up their sleeves to balance the ‘yuck’ factor on this one. Or am I the only one wishing that as far as the Belle/Rumplestiltskin arc was concerned, the writers had just left well enough alone?
kellenParticipantI’m actually finding myself annoyed with what’s been done with Belle. We had a strong female character who learned to look after herself and could see beyond the immediately obvious, and voila, we have Lacey, who’s described as ‘fun and flirty’ but is apparently a sadist and an idiot as well, since it hasn’t occured to her that she might become the victim of the behaviour she’s giggling about when it’s directed at others. And Rumplestiltskin, who supposedly loved Belle so much, doesn’t care about the change — or that he’s alienating the son he was supposedly so desperate to find — as long as he’s got Belle’s body walking around. Ntbr, but when you can’t differentiate between a body and the person in it, you’re not in love, you’re just in heat. Don’t get me wrong: I think Carlyle’s done a fantastic job of making Rumplestiltskin someone for whom redemption was a credible possibility, but I don’t think even he can continue to sustain that credibility after the writers have made his character oblivious to the differences between Belle and her doppelganger and do a complete 180 about the son he supposedly loved so much that that love was the one thing that still connected him with his humanity. I suppose the writers might see it as a fun twist to have Belle encouraging the Beast to be a beast, but so far I see it as just another pointless rehash of “don’t ever kid yourselves, girls: all that really matters is your looks”. I think girls/women get quite enough of that without getting it in OUAT as well.
