ParticipantWelcome Annwyn!!! It’s always great to see new folks post here in our little SwanFire haven! I love what all you’ve wrote so far and I hope you keep posting here!
Yes! It makes me glad to know that despite being told “no one” like Neal and “no one ships SF” that we do exist. I think as the story plays on, more might see what we do, if the writers continue to develop it the way we think.

ParticipantPan is creepy beyond creepy, and I can only cringe imagining what he’s saying to Emma and Neal. I bet Neal is trapped. Two weeks is going to be so long!

ParticipantA general “YES!” to everything you all have said the last few pages! The moon may shine very bright when it is night, but when the day returns, you can’t see anything but the sun. That is how I feel it is for Emma right now. She’s going “dark” they said, with her experimenting in magic, her loss of hope and all of this is making Hook come off to her as surprisingly impressive (to her). Yet that bright light is going to pale in comparison when she realizes what a strong, generous heart that Neal has always had and still has, because it reflects in how people respond to him. He doesn’t have a trail of enemies or people with vendettas (we can imagine) because basically he tries to be good to people even when he doesn’t have to be. Emma has a lot of people in her life to love, and she may not value Neal’s ability to share her with all of those people so much right now as this is a new thing for her. She’s only ever thought of herself as alone, and it is overwhelming but it is part of her now and Neal would sort of understand and encourage her to be able to accept rather than run from all these other people and connections. The writers can write things however they choose of course, as it is a story, but that is the one I hope they tell.
A lot of people faulted Neal for ‘flirting’ with Tamara, but that wasn’t what I saw when they met. I saw a guy who thought he’d just ruined a woman’s day, and to make up for it tried to help her out. He didn’t have to care, but he did and it wasn’t because he saw her and thought she was pretty. I don’t think he got out of bed to save Whale because he thought he was hot (although Whale is…) but because he wasn’t going to let his dad bully someone. It wasn’t just to yell at Rumple because he has “daddy issues”–he did it because as with the maid and snail guy, Neal values other people even if they are not family. That is something that is new for Emma as she’s always had to look out mainly for herself. The growth she had, going from a loner to “hero of the town”–it sits uncomfortably on her shoulders but it is part of her. Neal’s not going to lead her away from it. He isn’t going to force her either, but he’s just going to stand and say he has her back. If she does become corrupted, if magic does start to eat at her, then I don’t think he’ll abandon her. Even if she makes it hard to save her–and I don’t want them to make her weak and passive either just so he can show he’s strong, but whatever they do with Emma, I think they can right his character consistently as supporting her. He’s been through a lot without ever being driven to obsession and anger against those who harmed him, at least not for ever.

ParticipantI am in the middle. I don’t mind focusing on BOTH male and female characters because it is an ensemble, so at times the spotlight must swing one way then the other to tell the tale. What worries people I think is that it won’t swing back, now that it has centered on Rumple. He has always been an important character, so I do not feel that has changed.
Ariel was one of the highest rated I think and it featured Regina and Snow heavily. So I think it is possible the writers will remember a lot of their audience did want to see women as the drivers of the action, not just passive participants, and try to recapture some of that, but the nature of the PP tale worked itself in this way. I guess it would have been too crazy to make Pan Rumple’s MOTHER (even though traditionally PP is played in the musical plays by women more often then men!). It would have definitely been innovative though, and undercut the feeling its just another story of men as Miril says.
I definitely have that feeling with Star Wars and LOTR–though I love both stories dearly. The women characters are clearly more in the background than the men, even if there’s one or two that have something important to do.
Well we’ll see if the writers can get back on track–OZ if they do it has several important female characters ( Dorothy, the witches, Ozma, Glinda) but they could also focus on the men (Wizzard, and Dorothy’s 3 companions) . It is all about how they choose to do it, if they do indeed go there next. I’ll wait and see.

ParticipantI love those banter moments too. I noticed Emma didn’t try in NL to banter at all until Neal showed up in NL. He brings out her goofy side, when she tries to break the tension by saying saying why can’t it be rainbow valley. Or in Miller’s daughter, where she says “I can spell spell.” There’s this sort of lightness despite the dangers and angst that makes me enjoy them together.

ParticipantI still hold a half a hope that Pan had another family with 2 little boys Liam and Killian before Rumple. (This is a joke). It doesn’t look likely though and the drama already is off the charts. Seriously though, I am half afraid they are going to sweep it under the rug. I mean, the reveal will happen but there won’t be follow up on how the characters react, as some new crisis will take up all their time without an actual conversation.

Participant1. My head cannon for Rumple’s mom is that she was the blacksmith less attractive daughter or the unattractive daughter of a relatively wealthy man. Malvolm either because he was a seeking an end to his servitude or poverty married the woman to improve his finances not out of love and he got stuck with a child he never truly loved by a woman he barely tolerated. 2. screwball Ninga has a huge bias and blinders when it comes to Belle. This taints her view on Rumbelle and Hook and Neal. Except for her willingness to discuss and arguments based on wealth and social class I don’t find her blog compelling. 3. Is the CSF thread open for posting?
Mal mentioned the blacksmith in connection with his own childhood. I think it would be odd for the man to end up with the child without marriage, because well, their job in the gestation process is so small. He had to stick around 9 months or so to be “burdened” with the baby in the first place.
So I think it works either way really, that he deeply loved or that she was a means to an end, just a mark so he could live the good life. Perhaps she was just the same as Mal, a party girl who was not any more ready to handle the child than he was. (Like LOST’s story for John Locke). All we know is that Malcom was a wastrel type of guy, and he drank & gambled everything they had away and was not responsible. His one good act was taking his son to the Spinsters so someone responsible could look after him.
As to SN she does have a Rumbelle bias, which I mentioned when linking her article . We all have biases whether we admit it or not, and for some, you’re either with them or against them in regards to a favorite character.
It’s going to be interesting once ReHo gets into full swing as I have very different opinions on Regina’s character than Wicked Regal, yet I’m eager for the ship as she is. WR has said in chat that she’s expecting to see that Henry was having a lovely life in SB until MM ruined it. I kind of think Henry was already sort of sad and lonely, being the only one growing up each year, but not really understanding why he had no lasting friends.
We all sort of can have different takes on characters, yet also like them, want them to have screen time, and even end-game happiness. I’m not sure what I want for Regina which is why I skipped that thread. I am excited about ReHo, but I’ve really started crackshipping Little Birdies too just to take the angst and crazy past Pan. I mean, they have to top that messed up stuff somehow!

ParticipantI am wondering about his mother! PP traditionally is played by a woman in plays so it could have been an interesting but perhaps not commercially mainstream twist. I guess it was mind blowing enough already.
I think that doubt speculation makes the most sense to me, as NL runs on belief and doubt is the opposite, the inevitable shadow created be any belief. So that fits in to Mal corrupting NL. Children can believe so purely and adults we are taught to reason and it can undercut that emotional kind of belief.

ParticipantI think some fans did “save” it on DVR too to watch later but the network only counts within that week. They really should have used it during the hiatus. ABC marketing/network almost wanted it to fail putting it where they did.
