ParticipantSo it could be he means abandoned by turning young? What I mean is, if Rumple did not want to reveal his father chose youth over him, he might dance around he subject of how he was abandoned and how he knew Pan. I like brothers better, especially with Pan not wanting to raise Rumple when father leaves.

ParticipantMaybe they got to NL on Wendy’d bed flying like in Bedknobs and broomsticks, thinking they could rescue Bae. Only Pan was one step ahead.
ASs for John’s Umbrella..maybe Mary Poppins snagged it!

ParticipantI cannot remember the dialog but does Rumple think his father left him or is it a story he is covering up with half-truths?

ParticipantThat is cute! Hopefully some of them will submit something for FanArt Friday, like the FrankenWolf poster.

ParticipantI found this article, but it is from earlier in Season 1. So they do not specifically reference Neal.

However it is rather odd when you read through it and think about where things DID go with his character arc. He did not know at the start he was Pinocchio. He was asked to read Bonnie and Clyde to audition, to set the tone for his banter with Emma. Seems like they were possibly looking for him to be a “suitor”.
What I want more than anything romantic is that the truth about why Neal left. Despite the chorus of people who say it does not matter one way or the other, I think it does to Emma, but more it matters to his nature, brave or coward.
The same with the history of Bae and Hook. 300 years ago in the story or not, those events were played out on screen for a reason and just as relevant to Hook and Neal as other backstory. Are we supposed to dismiss Hook’s past as a man of honor? CS fans do not think so yet they say forget Milah and forget Bae. If these events are addressed on screen, then we can see Emma react to them rather than fans assumptions of how she might feel, get her reaction on the quality of the characters of Hook and Neal.
I think these facts affect how I view the characters, so to me, I think it is possible the writers included them for some purpose other than screen filler, but it would not be the first seed they planted but did not sprout. It reminds me of when we never saw Neal’s reaction to the fact that Henry had been placed for adoption, or that it was the Evil Queen who got him. They backtracked with Regina’s reaction to Neal, but that means we had a scene at the well where Regina must have been “And what’s Gold’s son doing here?” because apparently, unlike Rumple, she doesn’t do the math immediately. (I tried to find Rumple’s reaction in Manhattan as a gif, because he totally has this small smile as if to say “That’s my boy, romancing the princess, all right!”).
There are still some plot elements to play out. We don’t know if Neal kept the swan key chain and he has yet to try to return it to Emma, and she has yet to turn him down. There are things she doesn’t know, about Hook and about Neal, and I think it’s mostly positives about Neal and negatives about Hook.
It’s important to remember too that so many people knocked Neal and Emma for “being obvious”–well everything that is happening now should make it hard for people to claim that still. Not when they’re the ones thinking “victory”? (Now I’m ok with people celebrating what makes them happy, so long as it doesn’t flow into celebrating that others are unhappy in a Regina S1 way. )
If SF isn’t the story, then it isn’t but what does make me a bit sad now though is the writing because I used to have faith that regardless of which love story, they would do the work of showing us why it makes sense by addressing the history. They are doing that for SF but slowly so maybe the crash and burn is going to happen with CS.

ParticipantThey were trying to move the moon? I guess NL world is flat there and the sun and moon in NL do just traipse across the sky!
Illogical as that is, compared to how the real world works, again it is a magic world. We already know that it is not just that you stay young in NL from the magic fountain, but there is “no time” so you cannot see the future.
What does it mean that there’s “no time?” We’ve had a few threads about it, but basically I think it means the same thing as in the town of SB. You experience a sort of varying day, the appearance of time passing but it doesn’t fully register with you to age you. A lot of us have thought for a long time the “curse” came from NL in some way, and that may play out.Swanning Off–I’ve never read that series, but I’ve read others that have that concept play out a little bit. I’m sure Adam and Eddy are familiar with modern fantasy too, and that DiscWorld is pretty famous. So maybe that’s exactly where they’re going with it at least on a subtext level perhaps.

ParticipantWelcome to the thread, Katie!
Just got caught up on the last several pages and I wanna hug all of your posts and scream AMEN! Honestly, it seems pretty blatant to me that they’re writing Hook as the bad guy in this situation. It feels like they’re writing him in a pretty extremely negative way when it comes to his treatment of Emma. And I have to think that the reason they’re doing that is that they’re writing a crash and burn for CS, so they’ll eventually be able to move on with developing SF without the possibility of CS still lingering in the background to distract from the story they really want to tell. So while the current situation hurts and sucks, I’m holding out hope that there’s a method to the madness. If you think of Kitswitz as people, do you think they’d be like Hook in their treatment of women? I’d like to think not. I’d like to think that they respect the women they’re in relationships with, and for that reason, I can’t imagine them compromising their morals, no matter what ABC publicity might want, to have their heroine end up with a guy who acts like Hook. They wrote SF as being “poetic”, that’s Adam’s own word he used. They see the beauty in SF’s story, and I believe that after all the pain, separation and angst, SF are gonna get a beautiful, happy ending.CrownedWithLaurels wrote: Also, I want to remind everyone that LilRedSoupBowl on tumblr has been putting together all the voting for Nealfire’s fan names. I’m pretty sad at the finalists, after months of voting.
But she is still taking submissions so if you have any ideas, get them in LIKE TODAY.
My fav was Darlings, but Baelonians beat it. Today I’ve suggested she add “DarlingFires” “DarlingBaebies” and “DarlingHeroes” because now that we know the Darlings aren’t evil, and knowing how selfless he always has been, I would just like to honor his selflessness with our fan name :-/I’ve been sorta watching the voting, but haven’t participated because I didn’t really like any of the options that much, and I’m also just a lurker on tumblr, not an active poster. I remember back before the voting began, I saw a post where someone suggest Braeves, and I instantly loved that one. It fits his character so well, embraces all the sacrifice he’s made and how selfless he is, and how he’s still hanging in there all this time later, and especially now with his resolve to fight for Emma…I just think Braeves would be PERFECT.
I don’t have a tumblr but I suggested FireChamps one day on anon because Neal means champion, and it was shorter than one on the list LilRed had of Firechampions. I like Braeves too but it doesn’t quite get his “Neal” ness. Of course I was just an anon on her website so could not vote, so did not follow what other names came up.
Anyway I wonder if we tweet the ABC twitter whether the slogan versions of the Neal or Henry posters would ever be released from being held hostage? I seriously feel like it is “Believe it is too late” right now. I do not get why they could not approve any taglines.

ParticipantOh, my, that would be fabulous. Storywise if this was a book, that is how it would happen, but I’m just afraid ABC is so in love with Hook that it will be like pulling teeth to get anyone to be sympathetic to Nealfire’s plight. I never watched LOST but I do know from fandoms colliding and people in chat that nobody like the triangle on that show and this is becoming Lost 2.0. You’d think they’d have learned from the criticism of last time. But they don’t. Writers for some reason are in love with the drama that love triangles bring. Is it too much to hope that Jane Espenson would be a Swanfire shipper like she is for Rumbelle? I need a Swanfire episode that matches the epicness of “Skin Deep”.
Jo: YES. I don’t mind a slow build up with lots of reversals, pauses and obstacles but it is the media spin/pressure that makes me think despite how often we hear Emma loves Neal, that it is clear the marketing people love Hook.

ParticipantOur feedback reaches them after the episodes are largely done and written. So it will be months before they can address things we say. By then it feels like water under the bridge–they’ll be out of NL and whatever was swept under the rug will have been too far buried to worry about.
Someone on tumblr reblogged this but I can’t find the original gifs:

She’s got glasses, he’s got a keychain….

Michael’s teddybear is on a keychain….john’s got his glasses….
What ‘s the common theme–family.

ParticipantWell I don’t have a pretty picture, but just to remind everyone of all the characters rooting for Neal: pretty much everyone we’ve seen him meet.
Characters rooting for Hook: Pretty much none of the characters we’ve seen him meet. The Charmings and Emma are tolerating him because they need help and Emma relates because she too was once a loner/outlaw type (and she relates to Regina for the same reason, as someone in need of a second chance). Hook’s left a long list of people with reason to dislike him behind so it is not even “obstacles” in the way of Emma and Hook–it’s that Hook’s been making choices that hurt other people, and in turn they might not predisposed to want to see him happy and with Emma (in terms of their reactions in the show, like Belle, Archie, Aurora, Mulan…etc).
