ParticipantI feel “baddies” shouldn’t get their happy ending by the fruits of their bad behavior, but if they put the work in and redeem themselves (by more than cleaning up their own mess to use the Lost phrase), then eventually I am ok with it as it is a story about fairytales. So conversely, the “goodies” are allowed to do a few bad things for a good cause in this modern twist on fairy tales, as long as they do not do so many or so much to turn them into a “baddie”.
Snow using the candle to kill Cora, or turning into bandit Snow for example, that is one example of a goodie acting bad that doesn’t entirely change my view of the character as basically good. Then we have Regina trying to save the town with the fail-safe. She made that thing and cursed everyone in the first place, so sort of “her mess” even though she didn’t actually activate it, she totally had planned to activate it.

ParticipantThat is why I like that they showed us who so we could start shipping, but not to Regina herself because she really is not ready for it yet. Her thought was still can someone else make ME happy–not can I make another person happy? I wonder how they will react to each other when they meet. I hope she is NOT the pursuer here.

ParticipantSlurpeez:
Peter Pan is SO the Pied Piper! I noticed it said Fairy Tale Land that was NOT Neverland that was. I wonder if the Peter Pan is the one who started the Ogres War in the EF with the intent of taking the children to NL? Maybe this is when Peter first meets Bae, after Rumple has become the dark one, but before he ends the Ogres War.
Ooh, I love that. Diabolical.

ParticipantWas she inspiring her to commit adultery, or to find love, and then end her marriage with Leo? We have no idea of the marriage laws in that kingdom but divorce or anullment is actually a concept that predates feudal times so who knows what they would have written in terms of that (already anachronistic) imaginary kingdom.
I hope the idea was that with incentive to walk away from power that Regina would choose love. Like her mother, she chose power but unlike her mother, it came more from fear of being hurt again than bloodlust to see others suffer. At least, at first.

ParticipantI like the sleepless in seattle approach for now as I said on one of the spec /earlier threads. Regina has to keep earning her redemption. Plus I want to get to know Robin, beyond saucy but brave and kind, good father. I am still sad they went with recasting RH rather than a new character like Zorro (that was my favorite wild spec).

ParticipantThat is a huge compliment RG, but I swear I am not! I wish I had her style and panache with the GIF’s. She is an avowed Rumbeller but she is more neutral to indifferent on CS/SF so nice to see her take.
I think how fans view Neal goes back to the “low expectations” bar for Baddies versus Goodies, combined with the weird karma in this show. That reminds me of the post that Screwball Reblogged: http://screwballninja.tumblr.com/post/59639330618/a-creative-spark-set-afire-acceptable-ways-to
Snow tells a secret at 12 years old and loses her father, her kingdom, and the first 28 years of her child’s life, but gets talked about by fans as if she is super-pampered and never had anything bad happen so that it is easy for her to be good. When she kills Cora, she gets a huge black spot and fans call her such a hypocrite. Then, Regina curses untold millions, kills and kidnaps children, enslaves Graham and gets a heart that pulses nice and red with her love for Henry. It ought to have looked way more black and oozey but nope. And as fans, we cheer that Regina might be on a path of redemption, because she helped fix the mess with the fail-safe, and now she points out to TB that cost of darkness.
Every small slide and fall for grace of the Goodies, we hiss and spit, but every small step of good or just not being as evil as possible, we as fans in general meet with tons of smiles and cheers.
I truly hope the writers do not “listen to the fans” in the sense of continuing to give a pass in terms of the reactions of characters to each other for past bad behavior of any characters. Neal owned his mistakes, tries to minimize the costs to others, and is pretty clearly aware that he cannot just waltz in and expect that Emma will let him back in because she said she loved him when he thought she was dying. At least, that was how I took what he was saying about wanting to try. I do want to see him be accountable for his choices, absolutely, and let it help him repair his relationship with his father too. I will however be very unimpressed with the writing if in the course of all this, Regina and Hook are suddenly hand waived into goodness, and all their past flaws forgotten. The same with Rumple.
Neal is not motivated by the urgency of confessing his feelings so much, but he knows the only reason Emma would be in NL is that Henry would be there, and that if Henry is there, that both of them would be in IMMINENT danger. I felt there was a shift in his seriousness about his quest after he saw that image of Emma in NL. It’s the danger that caused him to be more panicked about getting there as opposed to just eager. Even TinkerBelle says to Regina that it might be “too late” because Pan’s had Henry a few days. Time is totally of the essence for Neal, and while I do think that made him a bit desperate, I don’t feel it really reached a level beyond what we have seen Snow, Charming, Aurora or others who are basically still considered good do.
So I am glad it seems from spoilers that
Neal actually meets up with Rumple first, because as much as I want to see Neal win Emma, his focus too should be on Henry because really, all the love stuff can wait. I don’t want Neal to wait so long that Emma once again doubts his love….he needs to Tell Her About It (cue the Billy Joel!) , early and often. In the same patient way that Snow is approaching Emma. Emma is not going to be badgered by relentless assaults into letting her walls down.

ParticipantI know we talked about this before, and maybe the writers tweeted something to suggest it, but maybe the Dark Magic in Henry’s life is Regina’s influence. She is the mom with a Dark Heart who raised him. I can’t remember where that was though or if they confirmed but most certainly it could be in various senses beyond genetics.

ParticipantSeemed more like Aurora, because she felt it not necessary to speak to Phillip and her motive was to tell the one she loves how she felt. Screwball Ninja had a great essay detailing the “subterranean text” of why Mulan all along may not have been pining for Phillip. I agree with her take on it now but I was not sure the first time I read it.

ParticipantMight the Pied Piper have been Pan before he became, well Pan?

ParticipantA&E like to joke, and they use a lot of sarcasm, irony, sardonic, wry ways of speaking, whatever you want to call it, but I’m going with “Droll Troll”.
