@Phee lol,the feels can take over.

I don’t know why, but I feel like going back is not really a good solution. I guess it is because I feel there are hints that FTL represents a lot of old fashioned concepts that prevent true happiness for everyone. Some get to live in castles and have true love, pretty gowns, shiny armor and complete confidence in a happy ending. Then others are scraping by in huts, or slaves to the Blue Fairy’s endless dust mining. (Screwball Ninja’s essay on that won’t leave my mind). Even if Sneaky Fairy isn’t Sneaky, it feels like to me, why would anyone choose to go back to feudal inequalities when you’ve experienced (well almost experienced) a society with a more equal distribution of winners and losers?

I think the “modern mindset” that Emma has is also part of her, and I feel it is something she shares with Neal. They’re both a blend of each world with authentic experiences, not curse-given artificial ones. Emma hasn’t really experienced FTL in its glory, that’s true, but as I pointed out it wasn’t glorious for everyone.

To me, the idea that a family, home and a job you enjoy, these real world, obtainable things ARE a Happy Ending, is to me the most hopeful message the show could give. So that’s part of the reason I like the idea of Neal and Emma together in SB, halfway between the world of magic, and the real world. I think that feels right to me then them cutting all the fantasy out or all the reality.

People can obviously fall in love with people from different cultures, and that can be part of the attraction (like the Before Sunrise with Julie Deply and Ethan Hawke). Still there’s also something about understanding the same things, like the pleasures of jelly donuts, gummy bears and driving around in a cute yellow bug. Differences and similarities can both be written as the basis for a romance. I think Neal and Emma are a good mix of that, as well as a mix of a fantasy and realistic, couple together.

You type [ S p o i l e r] text you hide and [/ s p o i l e r] without the extra spaces in there. I had to put those in so it wouldn’t do the command. It has to be around the paragraph you want to hide.

I feel they already did establish that first or even second love is not always your true one with Rumple’s story. They established it could be one and the same with Snowing. So the writers have not boxed themselves in to anything. In the real world, it is probably much more common to experience a first love and real true love later on, when you’re more mature. It’s also possible, and I have met a few people like this now, who are BACK with an earlier love after another relationship (sometimes with kids in a brady bunch kind of thing). I appreciate different types of love stories.

Let me ask you a question Nonnie–do you think the kids in Storybrooke are “too old” for Henry to ever date when they are grown up more? Technically they’re all 28 + apparent age older than him right?

What if it was just like under the curse and they were frozen in the same way?

Until I know differently, that’s what I think because they didn’t age biologically, other than Neal and he didn’t age 100’s, only about 10 years. So I think of both him and Hook as only about 5 physical years older.

    I don’t think that’s a shocking age gap.

I think it is implied that breaking a curse, not just a sleeping curse, is proof of True Love, but its open beyond that. Belle almost breaks Rumpel’s curse. So that seemed to most people to be solid proof even though she didn’t actually break his curse. He had no idea she was alive, after he kicked her out. She was hurt and heartbroken, but without any word from him, just the experience of the adventure fighting the Yagoi, and Mulan’s speech, she decides she will fight for him. Regina then takes her, and while Hook and Jefferson are able to find her, somehow, Rumpel, with all his powers, doesn’t. I see her faith in him as proof of her love for him, but its not magical and conclusive. It’s just hard to imagine why she could have such faith if it is not true love. Yet he couldn’t break her memory curse when Regina locked her into being Lacey. So if you really wanted to doubt them, I suppose you could.

Then there’s Daniel and Regina. We really don’t have any in-show proof that it was true, true love. We just infer that from how devastated she was by his death. The story doesn’t make sense that she would go to such lengths if Daniel just wasn’t so central to her happiness. I think that’s how I feel about Hook. Some want to minimize what Hook could have felt about Milah, because they felt it would prevent him from truly loving Emma. Then these tweets came out, and people stopped trying to argue about it quite so hard. It makes more sense for his character that he did fall truly in love, that’s what devastated him so much.

There are some Rumbellers who just hate the idea that Rumpel might have loved Cora too. Nothing proves they were “true” love either, and clearly, his curse didn’t weaken at all from her kisses. I think him truly caring for her explains why he felt so damaged and unable to be worthy of love. I think if Rumpel didn’t care much for her, we can’t understand his devastation and emotional walls, first from Milah leaving, then this heartbreak from Cora. Then he’s just a jerk to Belle, and I don’t think that. A lot of Rumbellers though prefer to think neither woman before Belle meant much, that only Belle has ever invaded the true core of his heart or however you want to put that.

There was a time in my life (around 14) when I remember feeling so confused how anyone could ever fall in love with one person, break up and then love someone else. Love had to be at first sight and forever. I almost didn’t want to read stories where characters had previous relationships, like in Jane Eyre or Rebecca. Then I got older, and realized life isn’t that simple. We aren’t all lucky enough to get it right the first time, and there’s something quite beautiful really, about coming into a relationship with some baggage and a fuller understanding of yourself, and being sure of it. That’s more how it goes in real life for most of us.

I could see CS being developed that way, just as I feel Rumbelle is, but it doesn’t take away from a love story like Snowing either that is more like the Disney first and true love kind of story. Yet in terms of what it would take to prove it definitively? I think the writers could always find ways involving magic beyond what they showed us already. It’s kind of a cheap device though, if the only way people will believe a couple’s love is genuine is through magic, not through the actual romance formed by their interactions and faith in each other. Then again, as I said with Rumbelle, if you want to doubt it, you could, and maybe they do have to pull the tried and true sleeping curse device out to settle it.

If Charming didn’t wake Snow from the curse, would you believe they still loved each other deeply? I think I would because of all the chances they had to walk away from each other. I think the same of Henry and Emma. She didn’t have to stand by this kid. She didn’t have to put up with all the horrible things Regina did to her. Long before she gave him that kiss, I think the story itself told us she truly loved him.

I hope that’s how the writers go about whatever ship they give Emma. I don’t want it to be like ‘She’s in a curse, and along comes this character and its true love whether you like it or not.” That’d be definitive proof of lazy writing to me, nothing else. I have hope that is not what they are going to do.

I believe Adam tweeted that it is possible to have more than one true love. Presumably not at the same time…though…not sure with Aurora Mulan and Phillip or whatever that mess is. I will see if I can turn up the tweet.

I see what you’re saying there PoM, but I am not sure they “need” a major character to die this season.
Such things are good for shock value, but is it good for plot development and characterization? At this point, let’s face it, NO ONE on that ship would mourn Hook dying. There’s a huge fan base, sure, but Emma doesn’t think of him as a friend. We forget the compressed time scale here, but it was barely three days ago he was kicking her out of the way to stab Rumple. With friends like that….you know, the saying.

I do think everyone is going to get closer if they’re working on a common goal. Down the line in NL I could see perhaps that type of storyline playing to more impact, or even Neal dying just when everyone thought he was safe. Yet I feel like they made that mistake with Cora already. It just felt anti-climactic more than surprising and shocking. I think even to the general audience. Guest star often equals dead villain.

What can they do to change things up in a way that WOULD be shocking? That would rearrange a lot of the character relationships? I think making Henry or Neal evil might do it. The Dark One curse might transfer to one of them. Looking at MRJ’s resume, I have to say, he’s no stranger to playing the dark characters. That could be why they tapped him (or maybe it was because he had experience being a hated character? I didn’t watch True Blood so not sure what the fandom thought, but I heard he was a serial killer.)

I do agree though they are pushing Hook very hard. I’m not sure it means something in particular like “he’s dying” or “he’s the main hero now.” It flows from a marketing stand point–he’s a familiar classic character, nice catchphrase (get Hooked) (though horrible fanname, Hookers) and sets up this big arc with Neverland.

The only thing that disappoints me is he cannot BE Dr F now! Keith David is awesome.
