ParticipantWe do have Mulan without Shang, though that love story was less central to Mulan’s story.
I could see it be both ways really. If this is a “mini-movie” then it is hard for them to really resolve certain plot lines they have in mind for the series-long relationships, so they might have Ariel and Eric’s happy ending be the bow on the end of this mini-arc.

ParticipantThat rumor is from the Wiki page and is based on Rictor Noton’s interpretation of a letter Andersen wrote to Edvard Collin around the time he wrote the story. The Wiki page says Andersen wrote in the letter ”I languish for you as for a pretty Calabrian wench… my sentiments for you are those of a woman. The femininity of my nature and our friendship must remain a mystery.”

ParticipantThere is so much room for them, as the Disney version she’s with the prince but it is famous in the original story that the love is unrequited. Also, the story itself, it is rumored, was written in inspiration of Anderson’s unrequited love for another man. So if the writers are saying it has been their plan to have a gay character, what if it is Eric, and he doesn’t return Ariel’s affections not so much because she’s a mermaid, but not a merman.

ParticipantI like it. Isn’t that something that happened to the character Angel in the Buffyverse? I know Jane Epenson one of the writers worked on that so maybe they would draw from that.
The whole idea of mermaids eating souls though reminds me of the Wraiths who suck them up and carry them to another realm. Something feels like it ought to be connected there.

ParticipantI kind of hope there is an actual HO, and Pan just intercepted the GOAT team, or that there’s an even larger threat beyond Pan’s goals.
I think about LOST here.
There were multiple groups scrambling for power, not just one “mastermind” of everything. Ultimately it did boil down mostly to a chess match between two ancient brothers affected by the island, but their respective pawns made some of their own decisions sometimes counter to what the brothers wanted, and perhaps the island itself played a role in some things happening. So maybe Rumpel is a powerful pawn in someone else’s game, just as Regina was one in his, but you still need more story and challenges ahead beyond Pan. The buck can’t stop there! We’re only in season 3.

ParticipantI was thinking Rumple transformed Ursula into a Squid. That was what Triton got out of the deal, rather than having to “banish” her.
Another idea, is what if Ursula IS Ariel’s mother. So maybe she was hurt by Pirates or Pan, and Rumple’s deal was give me the trident, and I’ll keep her alive…and hello, she’s alive but in classic rumple careful-what-deal-you-make style she’s a squid. Bonus, for Rumple of course, is that the ink she gives off is super-charged-pure-magic.
Rumple gives a “your welcome” to Triton, and zips off from NL, having escaped with more than what he needed (some bit of the “never-aging” magic for his curse, the ink and the trident). He’s feeling pretty pleased about the whole thing, despite knowing that Pan is pretty dont-mess-with-him powerful, never realizing Bae was there.
This doesn’t fit with the idea of Hook’s backstory as someone hunting the squid then getting caught up with pirates of course.

ParticipantI love Phee’s idea that the trident opens portals, and that Rumple made a deal for it to get in or out of NL. What if the deal was how Ursula became a Krakken? In the original story, Ursula hints she had something to do with the death of Ariel’s mother. In the prequel they say it was a pirate ship. Then Triton banished her.
I think Regina will definitely change her appearance and make a deal with Ariel, but not sure she could have been in on Ariel’s mother and how Rumple got the trident.

ParticipantKeck seems a little on the E-online Kristin & wetpaint style, sometimes there is more “oops” than “scoops”.

ParticipantWell at least you can hope for a good screenshot for the caption thread.

It has several showrunner/writer types talking about the effect of social media on their shows. The most interesting thing is how the writers have so much less control over the story than some fans imagine, for all kinds of reasons. It really boils down to a blend, as the writers come up with ideas that work on paper, then see the final product and how fans took it, and try to course correct to what they meant to have happen in terms of fan reaction within their vision of the story.
I think that’s why a lot of times they don’t KNOW where they are going with something, they just want to test it out and see. I totally think that’s what they’re doing with this Regina thing, and it is not plot critical in anyway. I think they may even end the series without a firm romantic happy ending for some characters, but with enough of their emotional issues resolved that all the fans can imagine whatever combination suits them. That’s been done on some shows, and while ambiguity can be frustrating sometimes, sometimes its the only way for the writers to avoid backlash from one camp or the other.
