ParticipantI agree, though Charming getting knocked overboard would be a good dramatic way to start dismantling the JR6 as has been hinted by RC saying his character isn’t really on the same page as the others. I can imagine Rumpel saying something like “You people just slow me down” and vanishing, leaving the others to save Charming. Regina might also be tempted, but then Hook would remind her that GOAT can strip magic and she doesn’t know NL like he does. They’d be safer if they all stay together, and Snow and Emma agree. So then you have these 3 working to find Charming, while Rumpel is off elsewhere (meeting Belle in the way that is not what we think…..).

ParticipantIn the Disney tale, there was fear from the humans and the mermaids about each other. It isn’t played up a lot, just a little bit in the Disney version, as Ursula is the main villain, not Triton. I mean, humans eat fish. There’s the whole sequence in the movie about poor Sebastion running from the chef.Imagine it going the other way, with mermaids hunting humans –and hey, Halloween episode!

ParticipantListening to the Jane Ep. interview, I think where they would go is back to the idea that we all have multiple “versions” of ourselves that are all true, but that different circumstances (like a magical curse!) bring out those sides. When you find true love, what that person does is not change you, but simply help bring to the forefront that part of your personality that may have been overshadowed by other things.
So I suppose it would be more metaphorical that even if Ariel literally goes from mermaid to human, the best part of her was a capacity to love and make friends with those different than her, and that never changes. The saddest bit of DIsney/Andersen is this idea of Ariel sacrificing her family’s love for romantic love. Ideally, it wouldn’t be such a choice, but stories thrive on conflict.
There’s a literary tradition of making it be a choice, the romeo/juliet thing, and there’s a touch of it in many of the love stories in OUAT. Cora doesn’t want Regina and Daniel together. Belle’s father doesn’t understand about Rumpel. King George’s attitude toward Snow (or even Jack, though that wasn’t even love for James). There’s other examples though, as Ruth accepted Snow. Thomas’ family welcomed Cinderella in FTL (though they were against her in cursed SB).

ParticipantI have now looked up some other crack videos because those are my favorite to watch.

That’s sort of very dark humor to using that song for those scenes.

ParticipantZombie Milah, I’m telling you–touch a mermaid, lose your soul…
They very well could go very dark on mermaids. We have already seen “the Siren” and she seemed to enjoy killing everyone. They also did call her a guardian. In fairy tales sometimes you have a character that presents challenges to sort out the unworthy, but the siren seemed more evil than that. Ariel could be a guardian to something (squid ink?) who was not corrupted but might present a challenge to our heroes because it is her duty.
I found this article about mermaids in folklore that is interesting–particularly the last bit as it bears on the resolution of both Andersen and the Disney version of the tail.
“Do you have any advice for aspiring mermaids?
Please tell young aspiring mermaids that Disney had it all wrong. It’s never a good idea to give up a part of yourself (your fish tail or your voice) for the sake of love. Love is only true if you are valued for who you really are, fish tail and all.”I think that is an interesting theme, and one of the parts of Disney’s version that seems a bit off as it does seem like Ariel completely transforms for Eric.
The other interesting bit from the article is where the legends of Animal Brides comes in, the desire to be free and wild. That reminds me of Ruby, who of course, will have to be featured less as her actress has another gig. I could see the writers having a role for Ariel to slip into some themes of where they may have originally plotted Ruby to carry some story.
Though I recall that phrase someone used and Ariel’s role may be “to keep Henry from intruding on the main plot.” Ouch. Better under the sea indeed!

ParticipantYes the crash of the beliefs of Tamara and Greg and their “holy crusade” versus PP is the kind of train wreck I’m hoping to see!

I loved the crack vid 3, have to see the others now, it was really fun. Thanks!

Participantwow slurpeez. I think you could be right, it would create some interesting depth to the story and parallels, even if they do not overtly call PP the Pied Piper, but say he had a hand in the Ogre Wars.
So I recently got a children’s picture book for my daughter about the Pied Piper, and it is a lovely version of the story to wash that nasty idea of a child murderer out–The Pied Piper’s Magic by Steven Kellog. In it the Piper ends up saving the kids from a nasty despotic ruler, and there’s even a love story mixed in. The pipe itself is magical and can transform things. So I’d still like it if they blend in the piper that he saves the lost boys, rather than Peter being an evil piper who stole them!

ParticipantI have special phobia for things with tentacles, chiefly the octopus, but also not a fan of squid or jellyfish.
Sorry, I have to finish the rest of your post but having a Kanye moment here (I’mma let you finish) but fried Calamari is the best snack of all time!
Ok now on to the rest of your points…I would love them to get the legend of the Kracken in there, especially with a pirate in the mix. You did do a very good job avoiding Hookriel too, you get cookies AND a seaweed cracker. Unless you don’t like seaweed too! (More for me….!)
Another direction they could potentially take would be to make Ariel their LGBT character, taking their lead from the suggestion that Anderson wrote the story about his frustrations over having feelings for another man, who had just got engaged around the time the story was written.
I never knew that, fascinating. Though Disney is releasing Little Mermaid from the “Vault” so I think they’d want to cross promote the whole deal of their version as much as they can –and there’s a trilogy of movies for them to sell (2 direct to DVD, a prequel and sequel). Then again, like you said, that blows a hole in Hookriel too. So they could do it, this show is its own universe, but most likely it’ll go closer to Aurora/Phillip or to Mulan.Mulan’s romance isn’t quite as prominent as Cinderella’s/Aurora/Snow–its not her entire happy ending/resolution, but it is a big plot point all the same.
Now to read the other posts, and wish I had some fried calamari to eat.

ParticipantI actually wouldn’t mind seeing Regina being Ursula. Mainly because I feel we have had a lot of characters come and go, and we all feel “too many, too brief” about these bit players. On the other hand, we do sort of need some real evil threats out there, and after Mally turned out so ho-hum, perhaps they could do better with Ursula.
Putting aside Hookriel crack, I am wondering if they would go into Ariel’s love story at all. They didn’t do Mulan’s either, unless you squint and say they combined Shang with Phillip or something. Or that they were going off traditional folk lore Mulan who has no love interest. Or cute, sassy dragon sidekick.
If so, they may leave Eric out entirely or imply he married someone else.
But my crackiest idea for Ursula is she is an undead Milah, risen by zombie magical means. You cannot bring someone back but you could make a monster of their corpse.
