ParticipantHello all. I’m kind of caught up! Now that I’ve set aside any hope for a good story, I am able to enjoy the off-the-rails-train-wrecky-ness of this show for what it is, just like Dark Shadows but with slightly better camera work, lighting, costumes and acting. Sometimes.
The truth is the writers really only care about shocking moments now, that twist where they say “The story you thought you knew isn’t what happened”–even if THEY are the ones who told us that story, even if they told it to us last episode! I’d write more but ….that’s giving more thought to this show than it truly deserves.
MRJ is lucky to be free of it, because he’s the sort of actor that cares about his character and the story arc, the meaning of it –and these writers are not the type who value that sort of thing at all. They’re all about the scenery chewing snark, the twist, the big dramatic stuff and what keeps shippers happy.Well take care all!

ParticipantHappy New Year every one! I am attempting to write this on my phone so it will be short. I keep meaning to make it to a keyboard as there is so much to say but I have not managed it for weeks.
I lit a candle for Lisa, and remembered the best conversations about horses, the u-pick farm (Apple butter), and other things. Like of course this show, but I prefer to remember the happier conversations!
Of course without the show we would not have had this shared hobby or discovered other shared ones like those of you crocheting.
It offsets the sadness about Lisa to hear some of you were able to meet and ranch, set up tents and other fun stuff. It makes me smile to hear of these things!
I will save my thoughts about the rest of season 4 for another time when caught up fully.
Hugs and cookies!

ParticipantRanisha raved about Grimm so much I had to check it ou and so glad I did!
My husband even likes it and we watch together. It started off more horror than I usually enjoy (same with Sleepy Hollow) but the humor, action and character save it (actually same for Sleepy ) I do notice some open plot threads or maybe moments where the writers hinted at one thing but then dropped it but overall not to the point I feel like I have to roll my eyes at the contradictions just yet.
One example is the lady Juliette met in the ghost story la llorada, who could only speak Spanish but after a few episodes helps them with another Spanish based myth and speaks to both Nick and Juliette in perfect English. I could have used a spackle line that she had taken English lessons with Juliette or something but whatever.
Most of the time though just as I say to myself, wait, shouldn’t this character react to this or that…They do! It is wonderful and refreshing after the substandard games the OUAT writers play with character offscreen development and oh, it was not what you thought and here is a new scene to explain ( like Leo romancing Cora).
I am hesitant though to get into speculation and analysis with Grimm since I just want to continue to enjoy it without thinking up even more things like the spanish lady. All shows have their little mistakes I guess but so far Grimm entertains me enough that my quibbles are few.
I also love the broad racial and cultural eye the show has used in casting and adapting monster stories. There is definitely some subtext about being open minded and in general I feel like morally the protagonists are characters I can be excited to root for in terms of their goals (but with enough ambiguity on the part of some main characters that it is still interesting).

ParticipantJust in time for (American) Thanksgiving….thank goodness for more awesome ball of fluff and those cute SF duckies!

ParticipantThat gif of the guy dancing could have labels “What the writers of OUAT are ACTUALLY doing” and put it next to one of a ballet dancer, gracefully moving with “What the writers of OUAT THINK they are doing”.
My dear KFC your wish is my command
what the writers think they are doing
What we think they are doing
What they are actually doing

Perfection, thank you! Laughter truly is the best medicine!
It lightens my doom and gloom enough to say maybe DSB and Slurpeez are onto some clouds that look vaguely SFish, but at this point I feel clouds are not enough to turn the momentum of the story they are telling–but that is the writer’s style isn’t it? They love their twists and if it makes the story crash for a portion of the audience who still expect there to be somewhat logical developments that happen unambiguously on screen, well I think those folks are watching the wrong show. I am here now for the train wreck of a story that seems more like adolescent dreams fueling a story-go-round that has to please ABC marketing and Disney’s insatiable need to cross promote!

ParticipantOf all the things I’ve heard about this episode, the Hook heart color bothers me the least. I’m not one to defend the writing on this show anymore, but I suppose one could argue that dark hearts are caused by only dark magical bad acts, not just bad acts in general. Milah’s heart was not black either, and she was a pirate who ran off and left her son, without the decency to tell her husband she wanted out of the marriage (instead the last thing she tells him is the opposite, that she’ll try to get on) and to at least try to send some sort of financial or emotional support back to her son. So I’d buy that only using dark magic for bad purposes makes the black spots and other physical bad deeds do not count.
Yet logic, reason and morality have little to no place in discussions about this show, do they? Let’s laugh instead about how Regina had a tracking spell to trace tire tracks so she could find the bean field, and can poof into smoke at will all over the hills to defeat snow monsters, but apparently neither skill is at the ready when she’s helping to find Emma. Let’s marvel at how Ingrid goes from no control over her magic to being such a virtuoso of it that she can teleport around, find this magic mirror and have multiple freeze settings powerful enough to even magically suspend people in time I’m guessing. How did she ever get credentials and set up in an entirely foreign world without some kind of curse download type magic to help her along there? Who cares, that’ll never get explained any more than ever-growing lists of things that never get explanation because its magic and its needed for the plot. The plot which in turn doesn’t make sense for the characters who could often achieve their stated goals in slightly easier ways, but they don’t (looking at you Zelena, most of all….). Why would Rumple believe or trust Ingrid? It’s just one of those things that sort of makes me wonder if there will be some twist here, because if there is one thing the writers love–it is that whole sense of just because THIS doesn’t mean THAT. Of course, there’s that meta-sense of the story at work, like that joke about Emma hating a dwarf. I get this sick sense the writers got frustrated with fans guessing their clever twists and started making sure there’s absolutely NO preparation in the story, no smoking guns, no set-up, so that we can’t. We have no idea what they’re doing because THEY will have no idea what they (the writers) are doing! It’ll all just be a surprise! Even for them, because even if they wrote it, they don’t know what anything means until fans react and they decide what they need it to mean to keep ratings up.

ParticipantI like the slogan – except, that would require us to self-identify as Oncers, and I’m not sure that’s something I’m inclined to do
Yeah I don’t really consider myself a ONCER anymore. I am a person who watches ONCE because I can’t let it go.
nd it’s the realization that we live in a world that a story about hope and forgiveness is seen as disposable but there are still SOME people who get why love, respect and sacrifice far trump pretty
flash and “hot” chemistry. Urgh. Sorry for the essay. This fanbase was a shock to the system and apparently I’m not over it yet…
You. I like you.
This!

ParticipantI meant to post on this thread on Watcher’s birthday and got distracted. So happy belated birthday…
Before I knew what a ship was OTP: Anne and Gilbert of Anne of Green Gables. They are still one of my favorite fictional couples.
Lilly and Marshall on How I Met Your Mother. I never really cared too deeply about Ted, Robin or Barney and was like “whatever” beyond curiosity about the Mother–but I wanted Marshall and Lilly to work.
Chuck /Sarah on Chuck and Awesome/Ellie ….just loved those couples.
I liked Chloe/Oliver on Smallville and Desmond/Penny of Lost.
So most of those were pretty cannon, but I recall a few that were a bit less cut and dry:
Riker/Troi on Star Trek the New Generation– I can’t even remember how it ends up with them officially, but I’ll always remember them as Imzadi.
Daniel/Vala on Sg-1 Officially I’m not sure if they got together either, but they had some fun moments
My goofiest non-canon ship is from Firefly–Jayne and River. They definitely were not even portrayed as attracted to each other so I think that’s my first real shipping thing, where I sought out some fanfiction and watched song videos for a crack-ship couple that I had no expectations of the real story following that way.
And I know there must be more but those are the ones that stand out in my memory right now.
