ParticipantYes! This show gets so dark sometimes, and Snow White brightens it up.

ParticipantI wrote that in chat one day. ” I’ll get you my pretties and your little Henry too”

ParticipantI agree Ranisha. I would have been FINE if Tamara had been “the one” for him at the breakfast part of S,B & T–and I wanted that actually. I doubted she was evil. I thought she’d be a real world person right up until half-way through S,B&T. I wasn’t about SF b/c they have a kid and used to be in love. It’s about the fact he’s Bae, all grown up and Emma never stopped loving him. That he never stopped loving her. They went to great lengths to emphasize that this love continued on in circumstances when really, if it were a lesser degree of connection, it shouldn’t still be there. Emma’s had so much to help her move on and Neal as well and neither fully get there–but neither want to get there. Are they “fine” with being friends? They love each other so much that yes, they’re willing to put aside their selfish point of view of wanting romance for the happiness of the other and especially for Henry’s sake. I don’t think that means they are less loving, but more. They’re not hormonal teenagers who can’t think about anything but how hot the other person is, regardless of what kind of person and how they’re treated. That wasn’t the kind of young love they had. They treated EACH OTHER well, up until August showed up. People say Neal was going to leave before then but what was his reasoning? He didn’t want her to go to jail for his crime–ironic, isn’t it. That was the last thing he wanted to happen and it did. He didn’t want Wendy’s brothers to be taken by Pan, but they were. He wanted to help his father, but ended up being separated. He’s had a terrible hand by fate, but his choices generally were motivated by wanting to help others even at risk to himself. He didn’t always believe when he should, or have faith, but that was his journey. He had to conquer his doubts just as any hero has to conquer his. They JUST had him die and come back. So some people say “Yes, so he’s done, need to move on to new plot.” The heck?
Emma doesn’t just see pain and sadness with Neal. There’s a quote from J.Mo that Schmacky had on her page the other day that “also emotionally she has to believe he’s dead because she’s already been through so much loss with him that I don’t think her heart could take hoping that he was still alive and in that situation.” (bold added) Look at that, some people say oh she’s been through so much loss with him, so that’s what he means to her, its just painful. NO! What J.Mo is saying that Emma is scared to HOPE that he’s alive. Not scared and DREADING that he’s alive. It’s not a bad thing to Emma that Neal is alive. It’s not something she wished were not true in the sense that she was happy he died and wanted to move on. She’s scared to experience the loss in that situation. You know, NL, the “whole island’s a bloody trap” place? The place where Pan has done everything to undermine her confidence that she can save everyone? Where they are facing certain death? In some ways like the fandom now, there’s a few a bit dreading the show going back on and whisking away a character we love. It’s hard to go through–and imagine, if you had spoilers at the cage scene, knowing that yeah he is totally going to die soon anyway. Imagine that? If the writers had this in mind when they wrote that scene, then seriously, the heck? Why think about everything they’ve been through as a “benefit” to her understanding of him as opposed to “she doesn’t have her memories, but even if she did, as we saw in NL, he’s not someone she really wants in her life”. If A&E said that, we’d all say ok, not how we interpreted her words, but we’d know she wants to move on. Instead it sounds like Emma does want Neal, does love him, and is just scared fate will take him, that she won’t be able to stop it, that all those experiences she had helped bring her closer to him. So what are they going to do ? Take him again? That’s not moving the plot forward! That is an endless retread. They have to show Emma conquering her fears about the price of her magic, her role as the savior and his as the son of the Dark One. They don’t have to show that being about restarting a relationship with Neal, but killing him off? That’s confirming what she thought and taking away hope from her and Henry. Plot retread and backtracking indeed, that only makes sense if forced into it by the actors somehow.

ParticipantWell I think it would signal a return to darkness for Rumple, and maybe that’s what RC wants as he likes to play dark. Maybe it is storydriven in that sense but like I said in my earlier post, it seems such a waste of a character and potential.

ParticipantLuna, such a good post!
SO I had a thought, RG just said in chat about maybe Neal’s off fetching water….wouldn’t it be an awesome time to find out he was a fireman in NY have him rush in with a firehose and spray the witch 😛 I know, that’s probably not what they’re going to do but…. it would be awesome.

ParticipantHm cookies to Wicked Regal …it may be early to say she called it but….looks like she called it early 😛 (course last time I said that it was for GoldenKey’s pan theory and it was wrong…so we never know). Anyway, my brain is…melting.

ParticipantThat was a great post, and thanks for sharing it Heather!
I have to agree with what she said. There’s a LOT of story to tell for Neal, mostly because the writers left a lot of emotional spaces and back story unexplored. He may not be a famous archetype character, but he can be given plenty of snappy dialog and pull of serious emotional scenes. Ultimately it is up to the writers to balance their show how they see fit, but killing off this great character after just killing him off? Very redundant. I can’t think of a proper story reason that resonates with the themes of the last season to do it. What themes did we have? First, we had a theme of belief, which was a general sort of thing that there is strong magic in hoping for things, combined with the idea of a leap of faith. Sometimes, you have to believe without proof and just go for it. You can’t wait for proof or for it to be safe. Second we had a theme of forgiveness and working together. The Jr6 +Neal put aside their differences to Save Henry. Third we had a theme of second chances. It wasn’t just Neal looking for his, we saw Mulan choosing not to go for hers, Ariel and Eric getting theirs, and Rumple and Neal reuiniting, Neal reuniting with Wendy and the Darling Brothers, briefly, Blue coming back, Tink getting her wings. So in some ways, one could say he had his second chance, but did he really? Rumple just said to Neal he could have happiness, just not with him. Then we saw what Neal considered his happiness get put on the other side of the magical universe AGAIN. He cannot catch a break except heartbreak, but he’s been the eternal optimist. To take that goodnatured character and chuck him with the trash would totally be in keeping with what this show does I suppose. He’d join Graham at least as someone who totally deserved better. The thing is, we went through that once already too. So I feel in terms of emotional upheaval, that there’s just so little to gain from the audience by killing him off. I’m not asserting there’s lots to gain from killing others off either but if they want to hit the audience with something different, then I think honestly, Snow, Regina or Hook. Belle would be much like Graham, a basically good character and we’d see Rumple heartache again. Snow would give Charming, Emma and most especially Regina terrific material we’ve yet to explore. The same if Regina. Hook is interesting, but I do think there could be more to his story with Neal than we knew, and we might see some interesting developments between him and Emma. I’m going to end with something I think a tad controversial here as an opinion but, I sort of hope if it is Hook or Neal to die–that the other guy does not end up with Emma after all. I love SF, I do, and I know others love CS more than I probably do SF but ultimately the writers put themselves in a horrible spot if they’ve decided to kill off a character while pushing a romance. It’s just such a bad way to do it, no matter how many heroic scenarios we’ve all cooked up for a “good death”–it still feels like “well let’s clear up this triangle so there’s no doubt.” Shades of what they did to August, lazy writing, and poor planning. The triangle should have been resolved WELL before plotting out any sort of death, if it involves the triangle—unless its the apex. Killing Emma? That would never be something we ever saw coming. BUt it could destroy the show so most people say she’s pretty safe. Then again, maybe j.Mo is tired of flying back and forth to LA. We never know! I wish I came off more hopeful but I fall into that group of fans that no matter what I lose a character who’s journey I wanted to see end on a happier note, well at least I know Rumple’s safe. So at least there’s one!

ParticipantMickstemp That line could make sense. Hook’s generally had a sense for adventure when excited about his hero’s journey. I know there is so much more they could do with the character, though, but obviously there’s tons of people insisting they’re not being biased at all to say they’ve cracked the code, and from a story perspective it HAS to be Neal. I’ve been generating speculations all morning in my head for every character and I think for imaginative enough writers, honestly any one of them could be big, dramatic and move the plot forward into new territory while providing a satisfying but still tragic and bittersweet ending to that character’s story. So this is a safe thread more or less in the sense that most people here wouldn’t be offended at the very idea of Hook being the one to go, but its not something I think is the most likely thing story wise or just practical ratings-driven television entertainment-wise. It does seem fitting and poetic to me though because he is the type to make big heroic gestures of diving into a battle and risking his life. Maybe he had a deal with Pan up until now, that he wouldn’t die until he killed Rumple? Kind of curious with that deal with Pan left so vague.
