@everyone – in complete agreement with what you’re all saying about the bio-family.

I just wanted to leave this here:

    Milah to Rumple:

You mean like being a man and fighting in the ogre wars? Other wives became honored widows while I became lashed to the village coward.

You could have fought, Rumple. You could have died.

You sentence him to a fate much worse – growing up as your son!

    Emma to Neal:

I was hoping you were dead, because it’d be easier to put you behind me, than to face all the pain that we went through all over again.

Not directly related quotes, but the context is still the same. Milah/Rumple were treated like outcasts due to Rumple’s cowardice and Milah wished he had died because it would have been easier on her and Baelfire.

So yeah, yet more evidence that the Rumple/Milah pairing is directly paralleled to the Emma/Neal pairing.

    Lalalalalalalalalala…………..

I was shocked when Hook became the first one to tell his secret. He had nothing to gain by sharing his secret at all, let alone going first. But he knew that in order for Emma to get to Neal—to the man Hook thinks is her happiness—he had to prove that this was how the cave worked, so he did the honorable thing—and he did it for her happiness. Colin O’Donoghue was excellent once again in this episode, especially in the smallest details, such as the way he seemed to steel himself before sharing his secret, knowing he’s about to make himself as vulnerable as he’s been in 300 years for a woman he thinks could never love him back now that Neal is alive.

Episode after episode this season, Hook has completely floored me with his sincerity, but nothing he’s done so far—not his “Perhaps I would;” not even his reaction to Emma’s kiss—prepared me for the intimate honesty of his confession to Emma. He loved Milah for 300 years, and he lost hope of ever escaping the darkness her death draped around his heart. Until he met Emma. Now, he sees Milah as his first love because he knows Emma is his second chance at love—his second chance at a life worthy of love. Emma is his source of hope after three lifetimes spent without it, and for a show that equates true love with hope on almost a weekly basis, that’s a powerful statement to make.

This is Hook’s darkest secret not only because he was scared to move on from Milah but because he never wanted to burden Emma with his feelings while Henry was still her priority. O’Donoghue’s reading of Hook’s “Until I met you” had almost an apologetic tone to it, knowing that what he was saying was going to make Emma’s life more complicated when all he’s wanted to do since he came back to Storybrooke is make her happy. But Morrison’s reaction also spoke volumes; Emma is unsure of how to handle both his sincerity and his selflessness. This is a woman who has said she’s not used to anybody putting her first, and that’s what this moment is all about. You can see the fear but also the smallest flicker of understanding cross her features. And Goodwin showed in such a subtly powerful way that Snow is beginning to realize that maybe all first loves aren’t true loves. Snow is the great champion of hope, and she sees that Emma is Hook’s hope. And maybe what she believed about true love is wrong because she can’t deny that this man loves her daughter the way her husband loves her and the way she loves her husband—with selflessness, with honor, and with hope.

And then there was Emma’s secret. I thought it was going to be that she never stopped loving Neal, but I was so unprepared for the revelation that she wished he was dead so she could finally move on from all of the pain wrapped up in their relationship. Emma and Neal’s relationship has always been fraught with tragically human moments, but this may have been the best of them all. Never has Morrison been better; I grow more in awe of her talent every week. Emma is a woman who is so damaged by her past, so broken by her abandonments and her fears of more of them that she would rather believe the father of her son is dead than have to face the pain he caused her again. That’s not a fairytale story; that’s real, human drama. That’s a woman trying desperately to move on even as she understands a part of her will always love this man. That’s emotional honesty at its most poignant, and that’s Once Upon a Time at its best.

Neal knows that he hurt Emma, and he’s not making excuses for it anymore, which is a huge step in the right direction for this character. However, it’s hard for me not to root for the idea of Emma getting a second chance at love with Hook right now. O’Donoghue broke my heart in those final scenes as Hook watched the woman he loves reunite with the man he thinks she’ll choose over him. I can’t help but root for this pirate to get his chance at a happy ending, and I can’t help but root for Emma to have a chance at her happy ending with someone who loves her so selflessly and sincerely. Emma helped Hook find the hope he needed to move on from the pain of Milah’s death; perhaps he can be the hope she needs to move on from Neal the way she seems to desperately want to. But I also want a happy ending for Neal because we’ve seen just how broken he is, too.

I love these reviews because he or she is very objective about the whole shipping thing.

So it must have meant something much more to Emma than she has let on & maybe those feelings stirred some hope in her for a new kind of love (hence her reaction to their kiss), which could then be part of the reason for hoping Neal was dead.

HECK yes. Emma is played with a little flicker of hope around Killian. Happy Endings start with hope. Hope has been a running theme for CS, along with choice.

I find it interesting how Emma & Hook seem to position themselves close to each other more often than not- could this be a little TL tell maybe, they have an unconscious pull towards one another.

    HECK yes.

@rumplegoldfan – totally missed this earlier!

Okay, I feel like a drunken guy from a bad 80′s movie but can I just say how much I love you guys!!! Everyone here has the BEST insights and finds the most amazing “stuff” from all the episodes!

Like can I just say that we are all awesome and CS seers etc. and you know, that we watch the show properly and that we should all raise a literal glass of rum together when Captain Swan are definitively proved to be True Love and all the haters are gobsmacked because we were right all along.

Does anyone else feel that it is especially awkward when Snow talks to Emma about Neal?

Lol yes. It’s just so obviously clear that Snow really doesn’t know Emma at all – when she was MM she was FAR more perceptive, and I think that’s the difference here – Snow is projecting the story of her finding of love with Charming onto Emma, and is making WAY too many assumptions. Take for example, in 3×03 when she said

    She just lost Neal.

And in 3×04 Emma says that

I lost him a long time ago.

Emma went to her to talk about the kiss as a friend, she wanted MM’s advice, the advice of the woman who told her about her walls keeping love out. Emma wanting to explore ANYTHING, especially emotional things, is a BIG.DEAL., and Snow just shut it down and made it about Neal. Ugh. It was totally awkward.

But I think Snow has realised now that she had the whole thing backwards – that Emma wanted to believe that Neal was dead in order to move on. That’s what the look on her face in the Echo Cave said to me.

LOL – I have to bring this up, the CS haters are latching on to the fact that Emma said it was “just a kiss” and was thus dismissing it. LOLOLOLOLOL. The way the CS haters watch this show continues to astound me. Emma said TWICE that it was “just a kiss” – methinks the lady doth protest too much. She brought it up to MM. If the haters think that Emma is going to gush over a kiss – ANY kiss, from ANYONE – then they don’t understand her character at all. With Emma, actions speak louder than words. She backed away when Neal said “Emma!”. She moved towards Killian after his love declaration. And after she said that it was “just a kiss” and received the love declaration – she walked right over to Neal and told him she wished he had died so she could move on. Because that’s what she wants to do – with Killian. She reiterated that outside the cave, that all she wants to do is move on from him, leave the pain behind. She explicitly told him she wishes he was dead rather than back in her life. She did it politely, but she still did it. And Neal just doesn’t get it.

Haven’t watched the episode but I get the gist of the overall situation (love triangle). It’s not a love triangle. Not a real one. It’s more one-sided, which doesn’t make it a love triangle at all. It’s a line.

YES. THIS IS WHAT WE’VE BEEN SAYING ALL ALONG. This is not a viable love triangle IN THE SLIGHTEST, THIS EPISODE PROVED THAT. It’s nothing more than a choice Emma has to make between her past and her future.

Emma wants to move on with her life. She doesn’t want to be with Neal because she recognizes now, that all he does is cause her pain. Hook loves her and the feeling’s mutual from what I understand.

Yup. She definitely does love him – she just doesn’t know it yet lalalalalalala but she will by 3×11….(or 3×22 but i’m thinking 3×11 with the pace A+E are setting)

Neal, on the other hand, still doesn’t care what Emma wants and only cares about what he wants.

LOL don’t get me started on him again!!!!!!!!!! ROAR

I loved seeing Killian admit his secret in the echo caves, but I wanted more of a reaction from Emma. I guess it’s a little too soon to ask for that, considering Neal is alive and they are still resolving their issues.

She was going to react, she moved toward him, but then Snow interrupted with her secret *sobs*

Still, it’s frustrating to me that Emma wants to move on from her past relationship with Neal, but he basically vowed to never let her. I was rolling my eyes during the “I’ll never stop fighting for you” scene. It’s romantic when Belle says it about Rumple because they are True Loves. But when Neal says it to Emma…it’s just irritating.

100% agreed. Actually it’s more than irritating…. it’s plain infuriating. But whatever! I’m trying not to get angry over a fictional tv show…. and failing miserably….

On a side note, during Snow’s scene where she is revealing her secret and talking about how proud she is of Emma, did anyone notice the way Hook looks at Emma? It’s LOVE! Seriously, if you did not notice that, watch it again! FEELS!

OF COURSE I DID. I NOTICED EVERY LOOK. ESPECIALLY HOW SHE LOOKED BACK AT HIM ON THE BRIDGE, HER FUTURE, BEFORE SHE TURNED BACK TO FACE HER PAST, NEAL. THAT BRIDGE WAS ABSOLUTELY SYMBOLIC.

    *cries in corner*
