I agree with NOnnie. Re-watching the episode the rose seems to drop in front of Gaston, while Gaston the guy seems to poof into black smoke.

We also don’t know for certain if Gaston has really died. It might be he was transported to a distant location much as Hansel and Gretel were transported by the wicked queen Blacksmoke.
