Season three of ABC’s magical drama Once Upon a Time is just a few days away and we know that you’re just dying to be reunited with your favorite fairytale characters. We’ve already traveled to the dark and dangerous island of Neverland—meaning we’ve seen the first two episodes—and sat down with Once creators Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kitsis to discuss the sensational new season.
Since many of you love OUAT as much as we do, we’ve decided to put our crystal ball away (FYI there’s one in the premiere!) and find out exactly what you want to know about season three. We’ve answered ten burning questions via Twitter about Once Upon a Time‘s heart-pounding romances, jaw-dropping twists and more!
Smolderderavin: To be honest all we want are Rumbelle spoilers so if you could please get some we’ll forever love you, you know.
We’re all about eternal admiration! Even though our beloved Rumple (Robert Carlyle) and Belle (Emilie De Ravin) are worlds apart, that does not mean that we won’t see them together. To quote Rumple, “Neverland is a place where imagination runs wild,” so just keep that rule in mind in the second episode. Bonus Scoop: Their scenes together are better than we could’ve ever hoped for. So sweet and so caring.EffulgentlightQ: Does our Captain get to throw some punches or is he on the receiving end?
Both! There’s a wicked fight in the first episode, and waters a looking rough for out Jolly Roger shipmates. We all know that despite being ridiculously attractive, Charming (Josh Dallas) and Hook (Colin O’Donoghue) don’t really have a whole lot in common and this leads to some hot alpha male struggles.Lukadrommi: Anything on Hook & Emma would be greatly appreciated Thanks!
Ahoy matey! Do we spy a CaptainSwan shipper? Welcome aboard! As you know, Emma (Jennifer Morrison) is under the impression that Neal (Michael Raymond-James) is dead, and as you should recall, Hook and Baelfire were once very close. However this tangled web of friendships and affections do not stop Hook from getting his flirt on at any chance he gets. Their chemistry is electric, no matter how hard Emma tries to fight it.TenacityandCalm: Please find out if/when we’ll see more of Emma’s past, especially her time in the foster care system.
We will get a sneak peek into Emma’s past in the very first season three scene! We all know that 11 years ago, Emma gave up her baby boy, but did you know how incredibly heartbreaking that decision was for her? And yes, Emma’s time in foster care is also addressed. Kuddos to Jennifer Morrison for bringing tears to our eyes multiple times in these first two episodes.Txangelwolf: Will Prince Eric be in more than 1 episode this season?
Why yes! Prince Eric (Gil McKinney) will be appearing in more than one episode. In fact, we’ve got scoop from the creators on this new prince. Horowitz spills, “Our take on Prince Eric is slightly different then what you saw in the movie, but it is hopefully honoring what people adore about that movie.” Kitsis adds, “Though our Ariel (JoAnna Garcia) really focuses much more on her and her journey and she also has a connection to one of our characters that you’ll see in her story.” Look for the little mermaid in episode six!
RobertBordelon1: Will Regina be on her best behavior in Neverland?
Nope! But that’s why we love her. Regina’s (Lana Parilla) motto always will be magic first, questions later, but that type of haughty, easy-way-out behavior is definitely not appreciated in Neverland. However she and Hook do have an amazingly sweet scene together that will make you look at villains in a whole new light.EvilDearie12: If I can ask a question, anything about Rumpelstiltskin in the first two episodes that are not too spoiler-y?
Get ready to embrace your inner evil! The Dark One is back and just as wicked as we remember. However, Neverland is a place that makes your confront your past, and Rumple’s past is much more twisted then we could ever imagine. The M-word is definitely addressed in the second episode, but not in the happy way that you would hope. Kitsis says that Emma is will be facing a difficult realization this season. He explains, “Emma looks at Mary Margaret (Ginnifer Goodwin) as her mom, but does she actually think of her as her mom?” It would be very strange if you were the same age as your parents…Keyzee29: Hope for Neal and Emma??!
There’s always hope! Especially because Neal is willing to do absolutely anything to get back to the woman he loves. And by anything, we mean embracing the one thing in his life that he has always tried to stay away from. Bonus Scoop: Hearing Neal explain to Mulan (Jamie Chung) how much he cares about Emma will tug on your SwanFire-loving heartstrings.AnnKine: Some Robin Hood scoop would be great. What’s his story this season? Will he get his own backstory episode?
We will see new Robin Hood (Sean Maguire) in the premiere, and guess what?—It’s not via flashback! Robin Hood is one of the lucky few to have stayed behind in the Enchanted Forest post-curse has made himself quite comfortable in a castle that is filled with dark secrets. He’ll be helping Neal in his quest to get back to Emma and according to the OUAT creators, he’ll be getting some major screen time this season.

Hypable attended a Q&A with Once Upon a Time creators Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis Tuesday afternoon. Check out what they had to say about the future of the show!Today ABC screened the first two episodes of Once Upon a Time’s season 3 to members of the press, and Hypable was there to take in all the goods! Afterwards, the screening the creators hosted a fun Q&A session.
Before you check out our Q&A with the creators, be sure to read our article detailing 10 exciting things from the season premiere! These questions are centered around what we saw in the first two episodes, but we’ll remain spoiler free until our review comes out later this week!
It’s all about the past as much as it is about the future.
While season 3 will explore new characters and the story arc of saving Henry from Neverland, it will also delve deeper into backstories of these characters to give us better insight into who they are and how they became that way.
A big part of this is Rumpelstiltskin’s past and how he became the man he was. We’ve seen him run away from the war, the reason we label him as a coward, but we’re about to get a lot more!
Episode 4 will be titled “Nasty Habits,” and it’ll explore Rumpel’s backstory even more. With the exploration of his past, we’ll get to see a lot more of his relationship with his father, and we’re ridiculously excited to see the man who raised Rumpelstiltskin.
Emphasis on an 11 story arc
While this isn’t necessarily new information, Kitsis and Horowitz said that the first 11 episodes will run uninterrupted by hiatuses and breaks and will be a complete arc on its own (the Neverland arc). Their lips are sealed about the next 11, though!
No plans for Camelot in ‘Once Upon a Time’
Despite a reference to Merlin and Excalibur, the show will not be going down the road to Camelot any time soon. Kitsis and Horowitz flat out said “no” when asked if the reference was foreshadowing that world. However, Kitsis did say, “We’re open to it. We could do that. But not in the foreseeable future.”
More Neverland, less Storybrooke
When asked if we’ll get to see Belle and her work in Storybrooke any time soon, Horowitz said that we’ll be spending more time in Neverland than in Storybrooke, at least for the first half of the season. “It’ll be a while until they’re in Storybrooke,” Kitsis adds.
When will we see Ariel?
The show runners let us know that Ariel will make her debut in episode 6, and while Once Upon a Time is known for doing new twists to classic tales, Ariel will keep her wonder about the world, and according to Kitsis, “There’s definitely a fork!”
How was Henry adopted?
The past is a running theme with Once Upon a Time this year. The show will be looking back at it and discovering who people are because of it. Thanks to that we’ll be able to finally see exactly how Henry was adopted, which will take place around episode 9.
Peter Pan’s backstory
In this version of Peter Pan he is someone you definitely do not want to mess with. We’ll get to see why Peter is the way he is with flashbacks to his past and his time with the Darlings, who will absolutely play an integral part in his story.
We asked why the creators made Peter like this, and Kitsis told us, “Someone who refuses to grow up will have a lot of problems. We’re young and we think we never want to grow up, but then we turn 25 and we think, ‘Oh God I’d never want to be 16 again.’ You get over it.” So they’ll explore exactly whyPeter refuses to grow up, and this’ll possibly play a part when it comes to his nature.
And Rufio fans be warned, other than a quick reference, Once Upon a Time will not be including him in this twisted tale. Due to copyright ownership by Columbia, ABC can’t do much with the character. But that doesn’t stop them from referencing him in episode 2!
Will we see Ursula or Prince Eric?
“Yes and yes!” There’s an “excellent chance” of seeing Ariel’s nemesis and her boyfriend on Once Upon a Time, and we’re excited to see how they go about it. But Horowitz was sure to let us know that “Prince Eric is slightly different than he is in the movie,” and we’re wondering exactly what he means by “slightly.”

Not Belle. She wants Rumple and Bae to work out their issues without trying to saddle Rumple with another kid. My money is on Regina on the past in 309. This is when she decides to adopt Henry after she fails at getting pregnant.
Okay so maybe this is a nod to the flashback episode where we learn about Henry’s adoption
