ParticipantThere was one time when Rumple freaked out, yelled at Belle, shook her and threw her into the dungeon. It was despicable behaviour. But as Midnight Dreary and Josephine rightly said he is the Beast.
In Beauty and the Beast there is a scene where the beast risks his life to save Belle from the wolves, and injures himself badly in the process. I wish Skin Deep showed a scene like this to illustrate how their love is not just one sided. Belle brings light, humanity back into his life. Rumpel does truly love Belle in return, he even vows to protect her in the finale. Hopefully season 2 we will continue to see Rumpel redeem himself, Belle deserves that. He regrets treating her badly, and if you think about it, Belle did not have it that bad. She was able to walk freely within the castle, was not hurt, or starved, Rumpel even let her go. I’m not saying that excuses him, but I mean he is supposed to be a beast. It’s Belle’s fate to be his conscious, and basically turn him human.

ParticipantMaybe Rumples wife was angry the Rumple could not / would not protect her and that is why she bailed.
Great theory! This could add onto why Rumpel was overly protective of Bae. He was trying to make up for his past but ultimetly failed agian. Plus, now Rumpel has Belle to protect.

ParticipantPersonally i don’t like the idea of that taunt having any credence especially after all Rumple did to get back to Bae
No matter if Rumpel knows Bae is biologically his or not, he loves him whole – heartedly. Rumpel is the one who raised him, cared for him, I believe Rumpel would do anything to get him back even if Bae is not his son by blood. Either way they share a close bond.
I also think that Rumpel had an arranged marriage to his wife and never truly loved her, making Belle his true love.
That’s what I was thinking too! I’m sure whoever he married was not his true love. Especially if the knights information is accurate and she abandoned Rumpel and her son because she could only see Rumpel as a coward after running from the ogre wars. I wonder if the real reason she left him was to hook up officially with Bae’s father.
I think it was just mean-spirited taunting on the part of the Duke and the Dark One.
That could be true, it’s just that Rumpel looked so guilty and defeated when he said that. It could be because he was appalled at the accusation, or out of pure painful memories.
