ParticipantThough I agree with most of that I think there is a difference between turning into a sparkly unicorn love bunny and showing basic respect when someone is being emotionally open to you. I always considered myself more of an Emma fan than a Hook fan but perhaps I have to re-evaluate that stance lol.
My recent issues with her though deal with more than just Hook. As a mother I can relate to her wanting to protect Henry from the danger of the fairytale world but to insist on denying him to even know about the huge family he has, as well as denying those same people time with Henry just smacks of selfishness to me. The reason I say that is because she has taken away Henry’s option to choose, which is something that she seems to highly value for herself. I think this is because she knows he will want to stay. I also think she has other reasons for leaving Storybrooke besides Henry’s safety. This is of course all just in my opinion though and how I see her character and the show.

ParticipantHmm.. I didn’t like that Sneak Peek very much…
Hook: You can’t just pretend this never happened… Trust me. I spent the last year trying to do just that..return to the person I used to be and it didn’t work!
Soooo he did spend part of the last year trying to forget about Emma š

ParticipantOkay, I may be the only person here willing to cut Emma some slack..
I hope next week does start a big turnaround at least with regard to Hook after she hopefully sees what he did to get to her. My problem with Emma is mostly that she is so focused on her own suffering and does not always consider others. It also seems like she is trying to create a self-fulfilling prophecy by pushing until people just give up and then she can say to herself “see I was right.” One of the reasons why my husband stopped watching the show is he just didn’t find Emma very likeable overall, which I can understand why some people might feel that way. Despite my quibble this episode she did seem genuinely grateful and even surprised after her sarcastic comment to Hook, which I liked. Hook has done a lot for her without asking anything return and it is nice to see her appreciate it more. I think she is finally realizing that he is actually there for the long haul š
I am writing to jump into that, and am offering a different perspective. I donāt think Emma is mean. I think Emma is scared. She has been hurt so much, has been through so much in her life, and has seen so many people hurt and lost, that sheās afraid to invest her heart. The way sheās treating Hook is not the result of aggression.
Okay, so I do agree that Emma does not mean to be mean and that it is not out of a place of aggression. It does sometimes come off as dismissive. Luckily Hook understands her better than anybody š
I am looking forward to the next episode but it does seem kind of a mish mash. Hook seems to be dealing with Ariel, Blackbeard, AND Zelena. I am hoping it makes more sense later as I didn’t like the insinuation that Hook was out sleeping around instead of looking for Emma. I am wondering if this is going to include scenes pre-curse 1.0 since Ariel as a mermaid post-curse 1.0 doesn’t seem to make sense since she had the bracelets and Eric? The promo dept cheated a little and used scenes from 3×06 with Snow/Ariel. Tricky tricky

ParticipantSo this episode had a lot of highs and lows for me.
My favorite parts were Captain Cobra scenes and OQ scenes. I really think that Hook is going to look at being a part of Henry’s life as an opportunity to make up for his mistakes with Neal. At least on screen he seems to be the only one repeatedly advocating for Henry as well. Poor kid deserves to know what is going on even if it does sound crazy. The scenes with Hook and Henry were really sweet and it seemed to me to be 100% about Henry not Emma.
The OQ scenes were amazing as well. At least from what has been shown Regina has never really had anybody to confide in excepting Daniel. I think it is great that she is emotionally opening up to him first rather than the writers just jumping right into a relationship. I didn’t really think it was necessarily out of character for Regina to trust him with his heart because 1.Ā she knows that he is supposed to be her true love and 2. the situation with Zelena and her accusations that she doesn’t appreciate what she does have seems to be resonating somewhat with her. I think it is interesting though that she won’t really be able to fall in love with him while her heart is out right?
Things I didn’t like… once again I felt that Emma was mean to Hook. I know it was meant to be a funny line and Emma’s use of sarcasm seems to be part of her defenses but Hook was truly being sincere and emotionally open with his offer and she threw sarcasm back in his face. Colin has mastered the hurt puppy dog look. Afterwards though she seemed to be really grateful. I still don’t like her whole head in the sand going to continue to lie to Henry approach that she seems to be taking. I am glad Hook is taking an active stand and calling her out on it.
I thought the witch fight was wayyyyy overhyped. Aside from the strategy of not bringing her heart Regina got her butt kicked. I was expecting a more even balance of attacks.
The funeral was okay. The music and the cut to Rumple was amazing but otherwise I wouldn’t be surprised if Neal fans are very unhappy with it.
For the promo I am confused. That was a very weird mashup of scenes. I was expecting a line from Emma again bringing up what he did last year. I wish there was a Canadian promo. Generally I find them to make more sense

ParticipantThat pic of the kiss is gorgeous!
Happy Once Day! I hope the ratings don’t drop too much (or at all!) this week. Think we will get a good CS moment this episode? I don’t recall seeing Hook in the one sneak of the wake where Zelena interrupts so I guess Hook is gone with Henry already?

ParticipantPOM ā you have some good points. Nealās desperation had him going down a dark road for awhile ā following in poppaās footsteps. I just hope Henry can break the cycle of that family lineā¦
Yeah I agree. I know a lot of people feel that Neal’s decision to bring back Rumple was OOC but I really just don’t see it. I think part of the reason is because it interferes with the hero narrative that some people have written for Neal because a hero wouldn’t make that choice to use dark magic. That is also a major point of disagreement for me though. Overall I really don’t consider Neal as heroic. He has made some heroic decisions (primarily as a child) but he has also made some very selfish decisions, especially recently. I don’t really consider Hook a true hero yet either despite his making some heroic decisions recently. Maybe my definition is a lot tougher than others š
Anyway, my interpretation is that Neal considered the price of the dark magic as the risk of Rumple being in Zelena’s control hence the “my father is the king of loopholes” comment. That is a pretty big price overall not just for the innocent people as a whole but also dooms his father to be a slave!
I think this was all very clearly contrasted with Belle’s reaction. Here was her chance to actually get her True Love, back from presumably the dead/limbo(?) and after learning about Zelena’s plot she immediately doesn’t want to do it. She had very valid reasons for wanting to continue with the plan (arguably better than Neal’s) but made the “heroic” decision to sacrifice her happiness for the safety of everyone. In contrast Neal, who was only getting the *possible* chance of getting back to Emma and Henry was willing to risk everything.
I know a lot of people have also been talking of the death of hope/happy endings on this show because Neal didn’t get his but I think an even bigger theme in Once is all magic comes with a price and that happy endings need to be earned. It has been shown multiple times that using dark magic comes with an even bigger price and it does NOT get you your happy ending. I think Neal being OOC is clearly a debatable issue but regardless of whether it was a bad plot device or not he used really dark magic and had to pay the price. That price was his happy ending. As far as I am concerned that is as it should be and doesn’t ruin the show’s theme.
All that being said I am sad that Neal died even though he wasn’t my favorite character. I didn’t think he belonged with Emma but I was hoping for a good relationship to develop between him and Henry especially.

ParticipantInteresting theory about the BTS pics.
Only thing that doesn’t make sense in the theory is that Emma appears to be wearing jewelry/crown
Uhhh… (sorry don’t know how to post pics)
