Emma is going to notice patterns of Neal’s behavior which demonstrate he’s actually a self-sacrificing, long-suffering man who puts others ahead of himself. She is going to realize her own views of him were really just misconceptions as she realizes Neal has a history of risking his own well-being and doing the brave thing:
Being willing to fight in the Ogre War
Trying to save Rumple from himself by going to A Land Without Magic
Sacrificing himself for the Darling family
Fighting not to become acclimated as a Lost Boy in NL
Making a personal sacrifice for Emma to get home to SB to save her family
Returning to face his demons with his father to save Emma in Manhattan
Risking his life against Cora/Regina to save his father’s life
Sacrificing himself by falling through the portal so that Henry wouldn’t have to grow up without Emma
Hook, by contrast, has a history of doing the selfish thing:
seducing another man’s wife and then challenging a cripple to a duel leaving a little boy without a mother,
general pirating,
using Baelfire to learn how to kill his father,
not fighting harder to keep Bae aboard his ship,
b being an employee of Peter Pan,
trying to repeatedly kill/wound Belle to get revenge on Rumple
working for Regina in an effort to get revenge on Rumple
working for Cora in an effort to get revenge on Rumple
leaving Emma, Snow, Mulan and Aurora for dead to get revenge on Rumple
erasing Belle’s memories to get revenge on Rumple
nearly killing Neal’s dad to enact revenge on him for killing Milha
nearly getting the town blown up, along with Emma and her family, which resulted in Henry getting kidnapped
Helping to save Charming, Neal and Henry, but really just so that he can coerce kisses from Emma
Making a play for the love of Neal’s life, despite Neal supposedly being a “good friend” and son-figure
While people can change their patterns, I’m hoping that Emma will figure out for herself which man has the better track record of putting others first and would lay down his life for Henry without question. Even if Hook is reforming from his swashbuckling ways, Neal is the true hero of our tale,
YES, YES, YES, THANK YOU!!
I agree with all of the previous posts about Hook’s character so far in season 3. I had hoped that Hook was changing his attitude to TRULY being a man of honor, that he was once before, but this episode just reinforced what I’ve been thinking all along. Hook is still ultimately only in it for himself. All of his actions are because of Emma. As romantic as this sounds it can backfire (as evidence of what we saw with Rumple regressing back to his old habits when Belle was Lacey) since he is not doing good because he wants to change for himself and it’s the right thing to do, but rather to get into Emma’s good graces. I posted this on another website and got some backlash from some die-hard CS fans (as expected). I fear that Hook is going to be the “Regina” of season 3. He’s trying to be good but regressed back into being petty like he was before, as seen in “Dark Hallow” Does he not know the bro code????
[adrotate group="5"]lunatigerParticipantYes he was 14. But I can already hear the FireFairies. But she looked at Neal like a long lost friend. She looked at Hook in 303 like he was a tasty dish she’d very much like to sample again.
Hmm…the tone in Tink’s voice I interpreted as she wasn’t all that please to see him (being a villain and all) but now that I look at the way she eyed him, I don’t know if it’s indifference or there’s something sexy going on…scorned ex perhaps?
lunatigerParticipantEmma: We almost lost our shot at capturing the shadow because you two were fighting over a lighter! Hook: It wasn’t the lighter we were fighting over, love. Emma: Okay, let me be very clear about something! If I had to choose someone, I’d choose Henry. He’s the only love I have room for in my life. Let’s compare and contrast what Hook said to Neal said to Emma. Neal: I just want to say that you’re right…about Henry. He is all that matters and if he’s the only thing that came from us being together. I say we did all right. Emma: Yeah, now let’s go get our son back. Neal, the father of Emma’s child, the man who would do anything for his family, even sacrifice his own life, says having Henry would be enough to know he came from them. Neal is truly a family man deep down. This was spoken like a true gentleman, and I’m glad to see that he’s not making any demands of Emma. Neal is *not* pushing for anything more at with Emma, he’s just being there for her when she needs his help. Instead, he’s swallowing his pride and teaming up with Hook so that Neal and Emma to get back *their* son.
I agree slurpeez108. Admittedly I was disgusted by how both men acted during the dark hallow scene, but Hook most of all since he said bluntly to Emma she must choose him or Neal at the worst moment!!! While Emma is so preoccupied with saving Henry. I’m glad that Emma shot him down and put him in his place. I already had the feeling that Hook didn’t really care about anyone else in the group other then Emma and in this episode he’s really a piece of work. The line when he says “I have yet to see you fail, and when you do succeed, well, that’s when the fun begins.” As you said Slurpeez108 getting Henry is a means to an end for Hook. If Emma wasn’t in the picture I’m not sure he would even lift a finger to save Henry. He seems anxious to get Henry so that Emma can put it out of her mind and into more “important matters” *Ahem namely him*
lunatigerParticipantPhee…thanks so much for sharing that! That was such a beautifully written post. Especially the last part. I always try to muster why Neal should get a second shot but I could not have written even half of what was posted here so eloquently. It’s just that awesome. Kudos to sassyzinger.
Was just reading a tumblr post that fits with some of what slurpeez was just saying…
Nobody on this show deserves love because love is not something the can be earned. Trust is. Respect is. But love? Love is a gift. It is something freely given, sometimes in spite of who we are or what we’ve done. And thank God it is because if not, none of our ships would sail. So, Hook deserves a second chance with Emma and is clearly going for it. Good for him. But so is Neal and if Hook and Regina and Rumple and every-freaking-body else gets a second chance at happiness then why shouldn’t Neal?

lunatigerParticipantRegarding the second sneak peek for 3×07. Can I just applaud Neal for holding himself back from socking Hook square across the jaw? I bet the guy is thinking “Seriously dude? Sold me out, took my mom away, now you’re getting it on with the love of my life???” **Ugh the hurt look on Neal face just makes me want to hug him all the more!**
It’s gonna be another warzone week of CaptSwan vs Swanfire after this episode!
lunatigerParticipantAgreed. I go back to Good Form. Hook: “I just want you to know that I also know what it’s like to live without hope.” Because Emma instantly picked up on Bae’s loss of hope in the cave. Emma: “I know what this is. This attempt to bond with me. I’m not in the mood.” Hook’s loss of hope, whatever it was, didn’t come across to Emma. But without even being there, Neal’s did.
Agreed! Yes, that line bothered me a lot. Not only did it sound forced and out of the blue, but it’s just another reason why I hate it when people complain that Neal is not giving Emma space or not understanding her…etc…It came across as more pushy to me then Neal’s “I’ll never stop fighting for you” line. Even Emma realizes that and she told him to stop, she doesn’t have the energy to deal with him right now.
On another note. In the next episode “Dark Hollow” , I’m kinda hoping Neal comes across his old cave hideout and I’m curious to see his reaction at seeing it again after all these years since it wasn’t a pleasant experience for him, given how he said it to Rumple “You know when I was sleeping in a cave…I use to dream about you coming to rescue me.” There would be a lot more of a bonding experience with Emma since she’s also lived in a crappy place like the foster home she describe before. And Hook and Emma seeing his reaction to it would be painful. (wishful thinking, but I’m hoping that they touch on something like this in the episode!!!)
Gah the feels!!!! 🙁
lunatigerParticipantKinda saddens me to see Hook and Emma sharing a ride in the yellow bug 🙁 But I don’t let it get in the way of enjoying the show. I’m kinda intrigued how Hook and Emma will interact alone together (Please don’t throw tomatoes at me! Still a hardcore SF!) I imagine his curiosity is much like Cora’s “These carriages are so strange!” or “I don’t like what this box is saying to me!” LOL Like it was said before it could mean any number of things, but if there going to go forward with this confounded love triangle, then we are bound to expect scenes like this.
I wonder what Neal is doing as this scene is happening.
lunatigerParticipantPeople who said Neal isn’t hot (namely MRJ isn’t hot) needs to get their eyes checked…

Yowza! 🙂
lunatigerParticipantLOL Doc: ” No giants stepping on my Miata” Ouch that’s gotta hurt.
Never took Doc as a Miata guy. Stylish Doc very stylish… 🙂
lunatigerParticipantheatherc1275 I totally agree. I also feel the complaints about Neal are absurd. Many of which are uncalled for towards the actor himself.
I just wanted to add two more frequent ones I’ve been seeing around the web as of late. This is in no way trying to demean CS shippers, but this is seriously getting out of hand.Complaint #1
“When did Neal ever start fighting for Emma???”-This one really makes my blood boil. Have we not forgotten all the things he’s done for her before and after coming back into her life without complaint??? Let’s see here…
-Gave her everything he has so that she could get on her feet again after she got out of jail. (Damn it August!!!)
-Rushed into his apartment to defend her when his father was threatening her. (Might I add, who also didn’t want to face his own emotional pain with his father in nearly 200 years, but he did it anyway. He faced his fears)
-Defended Emma against Cora and Regina and had her back when they were toe to toe
-Had Emma’s back again when they were hunting down his fiancé (even when Emma had no evidence against her.)
-Sacrificed himself to be sucked into the portal so that Emma wouldn’t get sucked in with him and make Henry an orphan.
-Survived a bullet wound to the chest and traveled all the way to Rumple’s castle to find a way to get to Emma and Henry and save them from Neverland.
Point of fact… When has Neal ever stopped fighting for Emma.If you’re going to blame Neal for leaving her to fulfill the prophecy, then you are also by default blaming the Charmings who did the exact same thing, (in many case probably worse, since they shoved an infant into a tree who could not walk, talk, let alone defend herself, to a strange new land and hope for the best) The Charmings and Neal see eye to eye with each other. They knew they had to let go of Emma for the greater good to save their people and all the realms the curse has affected, but they didn’t realize the pain that she would go through to get there. That was their mistake and their regret. One that they’ve both shown they want to rectify. Perhaps the reason why Snow isn’t against Neal is because they are both a like in many ways. Both not wanting to take a life, both thieves at one point in their lives, both having to “hurt” the ones they love so that they won’t get hurt. (When Snow made Charming believe she didn’t love him so that King George won’t kill him) Both risking their lives selflessly for people they hardly know.
Complaint #2
“He’s being sooo pushy when he said, I’ll never stop fighting for you. Give Emma some room! How dare he fight for her now!”*Sigh* The poor guy can’t win can he? Which is it people? You blame Neal for not fighting for her then you blame him because he is fighting for her.
People have also taken this line waayy out of context. Neal was not forcing himself upon Emma. He merely meant to say if she’s ever in trouble he’s got her back. When she needs him, he’ll be there for her. When she’s down, he’ll look out for her always. This does not mean “you’ll be mine forever and ever”. He did not say “I want to be with you.” He realizes she’s still hurt and he realizes she needs time but if she ever needs him he’ll be there. If she’s ever facing a mad crazy psycho demon, then yeah you can count on him.
But the best thing about Neal is that he is inherently like that with everyone, not just Emma, there’s an equal share of his love to everyone. You know you can pretty much count on him if there’s someone in need. If for example Emma’s parents are in danger, then Nealfire will jump right in. You know he’ll be good to all of Emma’s friends and family, not just her. No need to worry if he’ll screw over someone when Emma’s not there. For example:
-Sacrificing himself to the shadow so that Wendy won’t lose her brothers.
-Saving his father from dying, even though he hated his guts. He’s still his papa
-About to charge right in between Regina and David’s standoff so that Henry wouldn’t be hurt.
-Saved Dr. Whale from being a wack-a-mole by his dear old dad.
-Prevented his father from killing Lost Boys (even though they were his enemies)He never lost young Bae’s spirit, which is pretty remarkable consider all the crap he went through that would make anyone go stark raving mad. Not once has he ever thought about taking revenge. Not once did he consider taking a life. Like *Ahem* someone who needs not be mentioned.
The hypocrisy of it all is astounding.
While Hook can get away with abandoning Bae. Neal can’t be forgiven from abandoning Emma? Why the favoritism? You sold out your lover’s beloved son, the one that she regrets leaving, the one that you wanted to make a family with, the son of love of your life that you couldn’t get over for 200 years. Sold him like cattle. Not even because it was for his own good, but because of petty jealousy and anger. God forbid Emma dies and Henry somehow pisses off dear old step-dad. I’d hate to see what Hook will do to Henry. This is pretty much double standard, ladies and gents.Funny enough, I’ve been going through my old posts on this site and see that I’ve been shipping Swanfire ever since Tallahassee. I kept the faith. Many of my predictions and hopes have come true. And I’ve notice that we Swanfire fans have hope, faith, and belief in our system. Whenever we posts about Swanfire it’s always with optimism through the darkness. We have a rough long journey before any of this gets resolved. But I know that our faith will be rewarded in the end.
OK sorry…rant over….thinking happy thoughts…. 🙂
