@ellemo78 and @surayya Henley’s are basically what Bill on True Blood wore every episode for S1. Also known as a thermal undershirt.

Example:

6) I swear to God if they stick him in some sweater like Eric’s ‘working down at the cannery’ sweater, I will drive to Steveston and smack someone.

Ditto on that!! No turtlenecks or crewneck t-shirts either.

What are the major things to think about when writing a redemption arc?
1. Character begins arc as themselves 2. Character has several encounters that force them to think about who they are and what they’re doing 3. Character realizes they need to redeem themselves partially 4. Character attempts redemption 5. Character realizes change isn’t enough and may suffer a setback because they don’t see any point in change 6. Character realizes change is necessary 7. Character wholeheartedly sets out on reform 8. Character has opportunity to stop their redemption and return to previous state; they refuse 9. Character redeems self (based on this post)

I hear you there- While I dont condone what Hook did, it didnt really bother me, because Belle lost my vote when she didnt give a monkeys backside about Rumple’s murder of Milah, so a bit like some people cant stand Hook for ‘taking’ Neal’s ex-girlfriend, I cant stand Belle for talking out her backside & being Repeatedly blinded by what & who Rumple really is. I get that it’s Belle & ‘seeing the goodness in people- esp Rumple/Beast’ is her thing, but come on! seriously how long do you keep willingly & blindly trusting someone whom keeps proving that it your faith & trust in him is misplaced….. & certain people say Hook is a bad role model for girls, because he ‘pursued’ Emma (despite the fact that even when Emma was mean & lashing out, she never told him to stop or back off), yet a man whom repeatedly deceives & manipulates his girlfriend is cool & a heart throb o.O … I just dont get the fandom sometimes lol.

We always talk about the redemption arcs of the “villains” of the show but never the character arcs of the “heroes”. Belle and Snow are two characters who grate on my nerves with their (for lack of a better word) “perfection”. Always looking for the bright side of things and doing the right thing and HOPE etc. Not that there’s anything wrong with all of that, but in my estimation, those qualities make them just as flawed as the villains. Belle is willing to forgive Rumple anything because of True Love, including the fact that her husband is a lying murderer. Hooks heart may be black, but Rumples is petrified by now. My wish for S4 is for Belle to grow a pair and for once, not let Rumple off the hook for his actions. I want to see BadAss!Belle kick some butt in SB and not just be the Stiltskin doormat and town fact-checker.

posting this because it’s a good analysis of the Hook redemption arc.

“He had it coming.”

I feel like this line isn’t given enough credit. Yes, it was played for laughs in what was, for all intents and purposes, the comedy break in the finale.

But the thing is that it’s so hugely telling of Hook’s character, of Killian the man, and of how far he has actually come since we first met him in The Crocodile.

<!– more –>Nobody is saying that Hook is a saint. Nobody has ever said that his past actions are justified. But the thing about those redemption arcs? The thing that makes them possible is the willingness to want to be better.

Past!Hook was much like the Hook of season 2, the enemy of love Hook, the one who lived solely for revenge and was pretty much resigned to the fact that he would get his revenge and probably die trying. He had nothing to lose and nothing to gain any more, so no, he didn’t give a shit what he had to do or how he had to do it. Does that excuse him? No, it doesn’t, he did shitty things and he doesn’t get a free pass on any of it.

But the crux of it is that he gets that. He knows he sucked up one way and down the other for doing the things he did, he’s said it time and time again, revenge is a dead-end road and leads to nothing but misery in the end. He regretted his actions deeply, all of them, every single one. He carried guilt about Bae for decades, if not centuries, depending on how you look at the Neverland timeline. His guilt about Ariel and Eric ate away at him so much that it effected his entire outlook once back in Storybrooke, he was clearly not himself until he got back to Emma, and even after, he hated what he’d done, he hated that he was so empty that he’d let that emptiness consume him and turn him bitter again.

This is not Regina looking at her past and going “eh, you know what, I don’t regret any of it.”

This is Killian, in the present timeline, the man who has been in the company of Emma Swan and her family, facing his past, literally facing him, and being like “Wow this guy was a real asswipe and I am not proud of who I used to be.” He punched that guy in the face, he literally punched his past in the face, because that is not the man he is any more, nor is it the man he wants to see with Emma. That’s not who he is any more, and nothing could be clearer.

He said he tried to go back to the way he was before, but he couldn’t do it. What happened with the Jolly Roger, with Ariel and Eric, was the last straw for him, IMO. I honestly believe that once he had the Jolly back in his possession, and knowing what he’d done to get it, he realized what it was that was really missing, and it wasn’t his ship. He sacrificed not only his ship but his entire past and everything he once was all on the chance that might be able to get home, to the only thing in the entire world that made him feel better.

This is not about a person changing, because, you know, like the trolls in Frozen say:

“We’re not saying you can change him
Cuz people don’t really change
We’re just saying love’s a force that’s powerful and strange … “

It’s not about changing. People are who they are, there’s not a lot you can do about that. But there are good versions of yourself, and bad versions of yourself, and you have to decide for yourself, what version you want to be. He isn’t different for Emma. But it’s because of her and her influence and her family and the new life he’s making for himself that he is different.

Sometimes you meet someone who is so beautiful, so bright, so incredible, that you just want to be the kind of person they’d be proud to say they know. The kind of person they’d want in their life. Emma doesn’t want Killian to change, and she’s never once insinuated that he needed to, not to be with her, not to be around Henry. In fact, she relied on his skills quite a bit in Neverland, and she was pleased as shit when he told her she had a little pirate in her. Nobody wants him to be a saint or to be the next Charming, and nobody is demanding that he do anything different. Even season 2, at his worst, didn’t have Emma telling him to change or GTFO. The most she ever did was warn him to be careful. See the difference?

Any change Killian is making is internal. Emma didn’t have a problem with past!Hook, you know? She was fine exchanging flirty banter and innuendos and saliva with the guy. It was Killian, when confronted with that version of himself, who came to the realization that that was not who he was any more, that was not who he wanted to be, that was not who Emma deserved, and that he was done with that.

And that, my friends, is how you do a f$%@#!& redemption arc.

I’m looking forward to seeing any bloopers for the 305 kiss or the lighter scene in Dark Hallow on the dvd. Bet you Colin and MRJ had little boy giggles doing that scene.

Don’t know if this has been posted here before, but I just found the short film that Colin did called The Euthanizer (2009) online. It’s supposed the be a black comedy, but I found it quite dark. This is the link in case anyone is interested in watching.
