ParticipantThis is how you fall in love. So quietly, that you don’t even hear it.
Yep, that’s our ship 🙂 Beautiful sentiment. Thanks for the lovely pics @surayya. I swear, those smoochies just keep on getting better. This in particular needs to be posted numerous times, for science of course 🙂

ParticipantAnother great review from Nerdy Girl http://nerdygirlnotes.com/2014/10/20/tv-time-once-upon-a-time-4-04/
Just a couple of good outtakes RE Hook:
Hook’s story in this episode was about so much more than just a hand (and a date); it was a way to tie his character arc into the season’s two biggest themes: choosing to believe you can be more than who you fear you’re fated to be, and never giving up on yourself or the people you love. And while parts of it were hard to watch, the points of light in his dark story gave me so much hope for where it’s heading.
Ultimately, the biggest thing to remember when looking back on Hook’s story in “The Apprentice” is that it was meant to show both how little Rumplestiltskin has changed and how much Hook has changed. I’ll admit to getting caught up in trying to decipher the ambiguity surrounding Hook’s hand: Was it cursed? Was it just allowing him to give into his darkness? What does that mean for him? However, what mattered wasn’t so much what the hand was doing but Hook’s reaction to it. He was shocked and disgusted with himself, to the point where he was willing to lose it again if it meant not hurting anyone else. Colin O’Donoghue played Hook’s sense of torment and self-loathing so well in this episode; it broke my heart. He made me believe that Hook was truly terrified of succumbing to his inner darkness again—not just because he could hurt Emma but because he didn’t like himself when that side of him came out again.
Self-loathing has always been a part of Hook’s character, and Rumplestiltskin knew him well enough to prey on that. While Anna was able to turn away from darkness easily because she has a strong sense of self, Hook is struggling with his sense of self, which made him an easy target for Rumplestiltskin. It would be easy for him to simply believe what Rumplestiltskin said about who he really is and who he is always fated to be. But Killian Jones is a man who fights for what he wants—that’s who he really is. And that’s why it hurt to watch him follow the broomstick (another excellent Fantastia nod) and hold down the apprentice as Rumplestiltskin captured him in the hat. O’Donoghue made us see that Hook was lost and desperate, and we all know Rumplestiltskin knows how to recognize (and use) a desperate soul.

ParticipantThe simple truth is that Killian Jones has low self-worth. And I know that sounds ridiculous since the man is always boasting about how handsome he is and his sex appeal and how he’s good in a fight, but really, those are the only things he boasts about. That’s where his confidence lies. He knows he’s hot, he knows he can satisfy a woman in bed and he knows he can kick anyone’s ass.
But there is a darkness in him and a self-loathing that makes him question his place in Emma’s world. He’s done terrible things. He believed at the time and maybe even now, that he did them for the right reasons, but that doesn’t make them any less terrible. That doesn’t make him any less of a pirate. And he loves Emma so much and he wants to be the best version of himself for her and he is, but because he has so many misgivings and so much guilt about the stuff he’s done in the past, it’s very easy to trigger his fears.
When we first heard that Killian would get his hand back, there was an ugly debate about it – whether it was sending the wrong message that he needs a hand to be whole. But it turned out that wasn’t the reason he wanted it at all. He wanted to be able to hold Emma with both hands because he believes that she deserves that – a man without a hook, a tool he’s used to bring fear and pain to his enemies for 300 years. He wanted to go as the best version of himself, and it wasn’t about needing a hand to be whole, it was about not having the reminder of the man he was hanging from his wrist. Same thing with his clothes. He changed them to distance himself and their date from his past because he’s moving forward with Emma and finally finding happiness.
And that is exactly why now, to answer your question. Because Killian was honest with Rumple when Rumple asked why he wanted his hand back and then he took advantage of that. Whether or not the hand was actually cursed doesn’t matter at all because Rumple put the seeds of doubt in Killian’s mind. He reminded him of how he used to behave and then he took advantage of his weak moments to force him into getting in even deeper – just like he did with Anna in the past. And Killian might not have Anna’s innocence, but he’s a man in love, wanting the absolute best for his love, and Rumple took that and manipulated it and used it against him, just like Zelena did when she cursed his lips last season.
It is frustrating to watch because we know that Emma and the Charming family would support him in a heartbeat if he’d gone to them and told the truth right away. Even if he does it now, they’d still support him and believe him because he’s proven himself and they care about him. But Killian doesn’t have the faith in himself to believe that. He knows they’re good people, but he still doesn’t believe that he deserves to have a place with them. And Rumple’s counting on that. He’s counting on his fears and his doubts so that he can continue to manipulate him into doing his bidding.
Not sure about the “self-worth” part. Killian never struck me as having self-esteem issues. Yes, he does use his sexuality as a deflective tool (he is Captain Innuendo, after all) but I think that’s only because using his looks and sex to get his way has always come easy to him. The “self-loathing” part I agree with, especially since he’s come to know Emma. There’s a fine line between right and wrong, and being a ruthless pirate, that line veers to the “wrong” end. The guy hasn’t had a moral compass since Liam died. Now the Charmings are it, and Killian IS trying his damnedest to reform, even with this setback. So how long before he comes clean?

Not entirely sure what sounds pterodactyls make, but Yep, the feels are fantastic today 🙂
Found this on tumblr.
I just wanted to throw this out there after what happened in the episode last night. Jen said this while they were just wrapping filming on episode 7. Not only do I absolutely believe Hook’s hand was cursed and Rumple used Hook’s insecurities against him to make him believe it wasn’t, I also think he’s going to come clean with Emma within 2-3 episodes. It doesn’t change the fact that Hook DID mess up last night, but as you can see from Jen’s tweet… when someone asked what Hook’s BEST quality is, this is what came to mind for her.
Have some faith in our boy — he let Rumple get the best of him and he had a bit of a backslide as a result but, he WILL beat this. He beat Pan’s manipulations and he will beat Rumple’s. Like Jen said, he has a FIERCE determination to be a better man and what he’s doing with Rumple obviously does not sit well with him. Pan underestimated Hook & Emma’s feelings for each other and so did Rumple. He tried to turn Hook’s love for Emma into a weapon and it is going to backfire in his face.
When Emma was battling her demons, Hook never left her side. He never let her forget that he believes in her and that she’s loved. And now she’s letting go of her past and becoming a beautiful, more enlightened version of herself and he had a hand in that. (No pun intended, haha) Emma knows this. We’ve already seen her trying to reassure him and comfort him this season…she will stand by him. She will remind him that he’s a hero and that she believes in him. I know it hurts but this is going to be SO GOOD in the long run. THIS is how Emma will inspire Killian this season. He’s going to see her let go of her baggage and embrace her magic and stand beside him and I just know it’s going to help him do the same.
“At the end of the day, Hook is a hero… he’s just not comfortable with admitting that to himself”
Emma won’t give up on the person she loves. And she won’t let Killian give up on himself. Killian was going to have to face his past eventually. He was going to come to this crossroad sooner or later. You don’t just decide to change after 300 years of being someone else and never mess up. There is beauty in the struggle and that’s what we’re seeing. Rumple was right, he DID do him a favor but, it wasn’t the one Rumple had in mind. This situation will ultimately help Kililan believe in himself and Emma will see him through it.

ParticipantWHAT A FANTASTIC EPISODE!!! I swear, the writers are really outdoing themselves this season. LOVED the date!!! They were so sweet together. Emma’s reaction when he brought her home and she leaned against the door SQUEEEEEE! Now THAT was a look of love 🙂
Poor Hook, he’s dug himself deep. Emma had better find out soon or I’ll be pissed at him. Was anyone else screaming at the tv???? Why the HELL would you make a carte blanche deal with the dark one when you know what he’s capable of??? Head, meet desk……
Anna was the absolute best. She outfoxed the fox and got away with it (so far).
So what’s up with Anastasia? Hope we find out soon.
@Jenna_B I feel your frustration with the lost posts. Wish they had a save function on here, along with a good spoiler block and a preview post option. So many good feels for now. More on rewatch.
Sweet dreams everyone!

Thing is, I’m pretty confident he’s good with one hand too 😉
Okay, time to go back to work folks. I could spend all day here……

ParticipantI wish there was an easier way to spoiler block. I keep having to go back and fix things.
Thanks for posting the article @obisgirl. Best part was this:
The blonde beauty spilled that she was thrilled to see that Emma’s date-night dress mirrored the way that Hook makes her feel. “This is the first time that Emma is wearing something that is softer and gentler and sweeter and romantic,” she said.
“To me, that was really important because I wanted it to be symbolic of something very different than the other times that we’ve seen her on a date,” Morrison remarked of Emma’s varied romantic past. “Now she really likes this guy and she’s really genuine about it… and the fact that she feels safe enough and inspired to express that part of herself to him was a really important thing to show.”
I’m sure she’s going to get crap from people for stating her opinion. Nice to know, however, that we understood from the beginning what they were going for in her choice of date outfit.

Participant
The big issue with Hook, as we have discussed before, is obviously that he doesn’t want his hand for himself – he wants it for Emma, he thinks he needs it because she deserves someone whole . . . this is where his identity crisis begins. Emma doesn’t care about his hand. From this spoiler I think she’s going to end up having to show him not only that she loves him with a hook instead of a hand but that she loves him even though he IS actually a fairy tale villain, and that she will love and support him even if he “falls off the wagon” because he WANTS to be a better man. I am so excited!! We are FINALLY gonna get the tables turned and have Emma fighting for Hook!! Yay

But Killian’s going to find out very quickly that the hook’s never bothered her and she loves him unconditionally, hand or no hand and she understands what the hook means to him but she also knows that’s not who he is now.
This is why I’m hoping he gets his hook back by episodes end.
And how super awkward was it that he told Rumple he had a date and wanted his hand back because he wanted to use both hands to hold her? I mean I’m sure that was directed more at the audience than Rumple himself, but why the HECK would Killian divulge personal details like that to Rumple, of all people? That was just uncomfortable, haha. Also, does he really need a reason to want his hand back? Why wouldn’t he? I can think of a whole lot of things that would be difficult to do one-handed.
Yeah, I though he looked kind of sheepish when he said it. But really who else has Killian got to go to for help with what he thinks he wants or what he thinks Emma would want. He’s like a fish out of water in this new world so he;s going to try to do whatever he can to try and fit in, even if it means going up against the dark one.
Rumple’s little smile at Hooks admission is one part amused and one part shady. Rumple’s going to enjoy messing with Hooks head.

Participant@rumplegoldfan, did you perchance happen to venture outside our thread???? Into another thread on this site, hmmm???? Because I believe you’ve just “flipped a table” (or two) 🙂
Good for you for standing up for your son! I think there are a lot of holier than thou and whitewashing attitudes prevalent around here who can’t see beyond their narrow little world. And a lot of IRRATIONAL HATE toward a fictitious character, which cannot be healthy. This is not how the real world works folks.
