Apparently it’s his tainted Dark One blood that can get him to the Underworld and then to SB. But SB wasn’t created when he was searching for Neal so I guess it makes some sense (not much) that he couldn’t use the blood to create a portal back then since SB didn’t exist without the Dark Curse.
Not to mention, Rumple didn’t even die until Season 3. The usage of his blood for portal making is specifically just between the Overworld and the Underworld, because he died and returned. So he can’t use his blood to travel to just any realm.

Something that a few people have noticed. It looks like both Nathaniel and Jacob have a cut on their right cheek. This could be more evidence that they are the traditional body sharing Jekyll and Hyde, not brothers.

They did want to kill Charming in the beginning so I wouldn’t be surprised if the price for splitting a heart is that one of them dies–maybe gives it back to the other or something?
Regarding the heart split, my theory has always been that perhaps if one of them were to die, the other would too. They literally said that they currently share one heart. Maybe you can’t live with only half a heart, if the other heart holder were to die.
So it’s confirmed now that the green river (the River of Lost Souls) is the Acheron, based on the visible archway in the beginning of the scene. That leaves the red river as the Phlegethon, which was what we expected all along.
