Maybe, Matt. I remember my niece gave up Once in Season Two because she felt it was going to end up dragging along. She though it should have been only one season long. However, she really enjoyed Wonderland despite giving up on the mother show because it was a complete story.

I think Once could have benefitted tremendously from a shortened season like the Brits are known for and is trending here with both cable and newer network shows. I think a 10-13 episode season might have forced the story to be tightened up. But who knows, it might have ended up worse.

I mean, the entire premise of OUAT drastically changed after Season 1. It all started out with the concept of a cursed town, where its residents live seemingly normal lives not recalling their past Fairy Tale identities. There was also more of a real world/Fairy Tale Land contrast, because there was no magic in Storybrooke. The curse breaking at the time felt like it would be a final Season sort of deal, but it happened as soon as the Season 1 finale. The foundation for the show was changed, and the writers scrambled figuring out where to go from there. I mean, didn’t Adam and Eddy admit that they thought their show probably wouldn’t last past the first Season? So chances are, they had Season 1 all planned and outlined, but basically winged it from Season 2 onward with a few key ideas sprinkled throughout.

As for shorter Seasons, we’ve kinda been getting 11-12 episode Mini-Seasons because of the Split-Season treatment. However, maybe solely focusing on 13 episodes instead of 22 episodes all in one Season would still lead to better results? They would have more time to write, film and fine tune 13 episodes. An additional 1-2 episodes for these arcs would probably help with the pacing, and give more time for the characters without dragging their feet with a full 22 episode Season either.

Watcher, the reason I refuse to watch any further Ryan Murphy productions is that he has a history of having brilliant first seasons followed by spectacularly bad ones the rest of the series. It happened with Popular, Glee, and although I didn’t watch it, I’m told Nip/Tuck, too. That is just too much of a track record. I can’t get invested in another of his shows.

He excels at creating but continuing the story line isn’t a strong point. It’s like he and his writers have extreme ADHD and lose interest or go off on these wild inconsistent tangents. The reason I think he’s had success with American Horror Story is that it’s set up differently. Each season has a completely different premise behind it with horror being the unifying theme and an repertory of actors.

I tend to not be a forgiving person sometimes. If an author has an off book I’ll give them another chance, but two or three more stinkers and they’re off my must read list. Same with TV shows. There is too much well written entertainment out there for me to sit through sub-par story telling just out of some misguided loyalty.

I would say the same might apply to Adam and Eddy. OUAT Season 1 started out pretty well and it continues to be looked at as the strongest Season. OUAT in Wonderland’s story and characters were actually handled fairly well. Wonderland made sure to focus on just its handful of core characters, and the series had a proper 3 act structure with a clear conclusion. Maybe Adam and Eddy’s style would be more well suited for short form material like Wonderland and American Horror Story?
