    I actually have to agree with RG, in regards to this episode. This seriously might be my least favorite episode of the Season so far. This is the most critical I’ve been of an episode in a long time. Everything about it just felt off. Not just the writing, everything was off. The costuming/makeup (What was up with the depressed looking Mal), the acting (Maybe it’s the directing for this episode, but the line delivery from most of the actors felt rushed), the CGI (Dragon Mal looked very little like the Dragon Mal we saw in Season 1, and it looked terrible. I think even the visual effects team knew it was bad, as I’m pretty sure they were trying to hide it via quick or far away shots.), etc. Even the Bo Peep flashback in the 2nd episode of the Season felt more cohesive than what we got here.

    Liked

    – Honestly, I didn’t really like anything. The things I sorta liked are mixed, so moving on to that section.

    Mixed

    – I liked getting some background on a bunch of stuff. Like finally getting a glimpse of Mal’s history with Aurora and seeing how Mal and Regina became friends. Too bad the execution was poorly handled.
    – I’m mixed about seeing August again. I’m intrigued, but the way they brought him back just doesn’t seem to sit right with me.

    Disliked

    – The Regina/Mal flashback. Timeline confusion, hammy and rushed acting, depressed and sulky Mal, bad CGI Mal Dragon, etc. The flashback also left me feeling bored.
    – The present day main plot with Regina and the Queens of Darkness wasn’t much better. So these iconic villains are now behaving like a bunch of sorority girls/Mafia gang? And how does saving themselves from an incoming train prove Regina’s a bad girl? That didn’t prove her innocence. It proved her self preservation, which is something both heroes and villains would do.
    – Oh god, the LGBT overtones between Regina and Mal. I swear they wrote those scenes in a playful and joking manner, but it just felt jarring. Like RG mentioned, I was waiting for Regina and Mal to make out during that scene of them in Regina’s vault.
    – Ok, so according to the flashback’s introduction, Snow is an adult because we briefly saw and heard Ginny. However, why is Regina dressed and acting like the young Regina from the Stable Boy portion of the timeline? And was she really still Rumple’s student that far in the timeline? I could buy Aurora’s portion of the flashback fitting with the timeline if it weren’t for the issue I’m having with Regina here.
    – The whole subplot of Rumple conning Belle to get the dagger back. Not only was Belle being duped by Rumple yet again, but this just came across as awkward. Especially in regards to the acting her between Belle and RumpleHook. This goes back to what I said about the acting earlier. It felt off.

    So, they’re using Briar Rose as the name of Aurora’s mother?

    Adam has confirmed a 2 hour finale, which lines up with my schedule predictions (I spoiled tagged the tweet, because the tweet he was responding to mentioned the episode title):

    Swan Queen has a very dedicated and active fanbase, so they always do very well when they’re polled. Not surprised they are doing so this time around.

    Adam and Eddy have said that there won’t be any more time travel, though.

    Quote

    What we might be getting is Alternate Universes, which are their own headache.

    I wouldn’t assume Part Two of Once is also called ‘Operation Mongoose’. The only time that’s happened this season is Smash the Mirror. But that doesn’t mean the season finale will be that way too.

    I don’t know about that. If both parts were going to have a different title, I doubt they would even bother to include “Part 1” in the title. I think they would have just done what they did for the penultimate and finale titles the previous Seasons. Season 1 had An Apple Red as Blood/A Land Without Magic, Season 2 had Second Star to the Right/And Straight on Til Morning, and Season 3 had Snow Drifts/There’s No Place like Home. All of those were essentially designed as two-parters, with the biggest evidence being that the flashbacks for the finales directly followed up where the penultimate flashbacks left off.

    About Smash the Mirror, Adam said on Twitter not too long ago that they now consider it as two episodes, as does the network. Both parts of Smash the Mirror still being counted as 408 production code wise was likely the result of the sudden decision to expand it into a two hour episode. Production wise, 409 and beyond were already in production when that decision was made, so it didn’t make practical sense to re-assign production numbers.

    Adam’s tweets:

    @DeviousPeep @VPustilnik as far as we're concerned it's 23 eps/hours. with 2 of them named 408A and 408B. That's how we number internally

    @Taylor_Marisa 4A had 12. 4B we're planning 11

    But now Operation Mongoose Parts 1 and 2 are being produced under two distinct production codes. Way to confuse all the episode lists even more!

    So …technically speaking….is 422 really 424?????

    423.
