There are also clues for August being the Wizard of Oz in Regina’s conduct. In the musical version of The Wizard of Oz: “The Wiz”, the Wicked Witch of the West sings a wonderful song: “Don’t Nobody Bring Me No Bad News”. If OUAT was a musical like Glee, Regina would have sung that song in almost every episode, most often to Mr. Gold, but also to Graham, Archie, Sidney, Jefferson, Emma and Henry. We have yet to see a conversation between August & Regina, just like there is never a direct conversation between the Wizard and the Wicked Witch in Oz.
August spoke of the magical qualities of water at the Well which returns something that has been lost. I’ve wondered if he knows how Dorothy melted the Wicked Witch with a bucket of water and can bring that magical property to effect in breaking the curse with Emma’s and Henry’s teamwork.
Good point. π I forgot about the water killing the Wicked Witch of the East. π

Participant^Yeah, but Pinocchio didn’t wear a leather jacket and ride a motorcycle, Rumpelstiltskin didn’t have a love interest and Snow White didn’t know kick boxing. π The show likes to switch it up sometimes.

Wow… I think you may have nailed it. I also saw Tin Man’s oil can on one of Gold’s shelves in episode 1×16 Heart of Darkness. No way he’s Pinocchio, you’re right about that. That would be such a let down (even if he was Bae). Peter Pan would be exciting. But you have nice evidence to back it up.
So do you think he had anything to do with bringing Henry to SB for Regina? Do you think him and Rumps made a deal back in the day and maybe August tries to kill him instead of honoring that agreement?
Being Oz would also explain how he knows so much. And, like Oz helped Dorothy get back home to Kansas, August is helping them get back to where they belong.
Good stuff…
Why thank you, kind sir! π
I also believe that maybe August had something to do with bringing Henry into Storybrooke. In the Wizard of Oz, there are all sorts of different ways in which people travel. Dorothy travels through a tornado, Glinda the Good Witch of the North telaported through a magic bubble, the Wicked Witch of the West used her broom stick, and then Dorothy transported back to to Kansas by clicking her heels together.
I think even Oz says himself that the way in which he arrived in Oz was in an air balloon via a terrible storm. This parallels how August arrived in Storybrooke on his motorcycle via a terrible storm.

ParticipantHoly crap. No one has called that August is the Wizard of Oz? Well, I’M CALLIN’ IT!!! Can it be added the OP please? π

If Regina wants to threaten Rumple with Belle, how do you think she would do it? Like would Regina just say “do this or Iβll kill Belle” because Rumple probably won’t believe her. Maybe Regina will show Rumple Belle all tied up? Or show him her heart!?
I think she’ll show him her heart. that would show him that she is control of Belle’s actions and loyalties and that she can be killed at any time.

Rumpelstiltskin does seem to toy with all the other characters. Offering deals with sometimes stupid returns… like a cloak, or a hair… but he does seem to always know what’s coming… so much so that he intercepts it. It’s like he knew cinderella was going to imprison him, but he still did it, provided that one day she’ll pay the price anyway. Probably he thought it still worth it.
His fascination with children obviously comes from the fact that he loved his boy dearly, and realises that children are the strongest bargaining chip for his deals. And it’s funny how he places the right kids at the right place, like Emma’s son. It’s obvious he set things in motion by doing that.
But Evil is made, not born, as is clear with this character – his hardships and losses turned him evil, but I do hope that at the end he will have his happy ending by finding belle… which i’m sure the queen is keeping as leverage against him… oh yes… probably that’s why regina wanted to know if Gold remembers he’s rumpel… otherwise, Belle would be useless…
I would see no reason as to why he would loose his dagger… Mr. Gold has keepsakes from everyone’s story, and when he became the Dark One, he had the Dagger in Hand, so he wouldn’t really loose it would he? knowing how precious it was to his life… But I guess we’ll find out.
I also hope we get to know why Gold and Regina clashed in the beginning and how they became rivals… is it just a feud for Power? would be stupid if that were the case as Regina and Rumpel are the 2 deepest characters there are in the series.
I do have some questions though:
1. Why did Rumpelstiltskin give Regina the Dark Curse in the First Place
2. How was he protected to remember the previous life? does this mean he is in fact stronger than Regina?
3. And what’s in a Name? What is this thing with names and Rumpel? The story states that who knows Rumpel’s name will have power over him, and in the beginning the guard informs snow white not to give rumpel their name as he will have power over them… really? It seems to me that EVERYONE knows rumpel’s name, and he knows everyone’s… how does it really give power? Did they just mention it in the series to stick to the original tale… they should show us how it matters… the names and stuff… cause I’m lost…In any case, I do not think he is truly evil.
If he where he would have killed belle, not let her go, and him being the strongest being in all the land, he doesn’t kill for no reason, he just toys around and makes deals. seems like a mischievous character like puck or loki… the trouble maker…But whichever the case,
Rumpelstiltskin is surely the most intriguing character in Once Upon a Time π
Great post! π A lot of great points.
Personally, I think Rumpel gave Regina the curse as a means to gradually destroy her. i think he gave her the wrong ingredients to the curse. In episode 1×16, “Heart of Darkness,” we learned that Rumpel was able to bottle true love. Many of us are beginning to believe that true love is the key ingredient to the curse. So, maybe itβs true love not, and not the heart of the person you love most that is needed to cast the Dark Curse. Rumpel would never give that much power to anyone, especially not Regina. So, I have a feeling Rumpel will reveal that Regina cast the wrong curse in the finale.

The Return is Kathryn returrning, but I believe August is Baelfire because TV shows don't believe in coincidences.
If August is Baelfire, how did he avoid aging all that time? That’s why I also believe he’s Pinocchio.
I finally believe he’s Henry’s father. I thought of it when rewatching episode 9. Of course Emma wouldn’t mention Henry’s father to Mary Margret if he wasn’t going to return some time in the series or in the same episode.
Also, aren’t the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen dead and not fairytale characters. That’s just people who think it would be a good plot twist. Does anyone really August is them.
And the opening titles. They changed “Only one knows the truth” to “Who knows the truth?” Because now we know Mr Gold does too. And the Mad Hatter, ish, etc. They also changed “Only one can break the spell” to “Who can break the spell?” What if the Blue Fairy was lying when she said the tree can only hold one? Or she meant one fully-grown adult, so Pinocchio and Emma…
And that’s how August remembers.
Wait, you believe August is Henry’s father? Don’t you think Emma herself would have recognized him? They acted as if they had met for the first time. and not just in front of other people, but while they were alone too.

ParticipantWe need to keep in mind that the enxt episode will heavily feature the fairies. Fairies as in possible Neverland fairies. That would easily explain why Bae hasn't aged.

How does Belle factor into the curse?
I don’t think Belle’s DNA or essence is needed to create or break the curse, but I do think that she was the inspiration for the curse. In episode 1×16, “Heart of Darkness,” we learned that Rumpel was able to bottle true love in the form of Snow and Charming’s hair. And a lot of people are speculating that it is true love, and not the heart of the one you love most, is what’s needed to cast the Dark Curse. So, why would the Dark One be so fascinated with true love? Why would someone so evil be interested in bottling true love? This clearly occured after Belle’s supposed “death,” so that leads me to believe that her death was the catalyst for Rumpel’s interest in true love. So, is Belle directly involved in the curse? No. But was she inspiration for it? Probably yes. πI agree with this. I don’t think Rumpel would have developed an interest in bottling true love if it wasn’t for his experience with Belle. But what I’m curious to know is what role with the creator of the curse play? We’ve already seen that being the creator gives you benefits. For one, you retain all of your memories. π And I have a feeling the writers will reveal more about what benefits being the creator of the curse gives you. Because as the season progresses, the curse is becoming and more mysterious. The creation of the true love potion is a very curious thing. It makes me think that the curse wasn’t originally created for evil, or that maybe Rumpel gave the Evil Queen the wrong ingredients on purpose.

I, for one, am eager to hear what tales Rumple will tell once he starts his therapy with Archie.
Me too! Honestly, when I heard about Rumple/Gold being next to sit on Archie’s couch from clips of Paleyfest, I actually busted out laughing! The imagery of that guy lying down on the couch telling Archie all his problems is just hilarious! π
I’m excited and worried at the same time about what Rumple/Gold would tell Archie, mostly for Archie’s sake. How do you think it would feel to listen to the secrets of someone like Rumple/Gold? Robert Carlyle himself said that Gold was slightly “warped.” I’m afraid Archie is going to walk out of that session slightly disturbed.
That is going to be one scary therapy session. π π―
