I think that Rumple did know that by starting a family with Cora he would be changing the future. Perhaps preventing himself from ever finding Bae some other way than the way he cancelled out. But I don’t think he was giving up. He would’ve kept trying to find another way. And frankly, there WERE other ways to get from fairy tale land to our world. 1) Bae didn’t go straight to our world with the bean, so he found another way. 2) there were other beans in giant land 3) there was at least one enchanted tree that he could’ve learned how to use.
Good point. We’ve learned of numerous different ways to get to from one world to another. Rumpel has tried the magic bean, Jefferson’s hat, Dorothy’s ruby slippers (The Doctor) and then he settled on the curse. So, Rumpel wanting to start a family with Cora didn’t mean that he was giving up on his search for Baelfire. There were many different ways for him to reach him.

Would Rumple really have given up the search for Bae? I found that scene so odd and I’ve watched it so many times now. I can’t believe Rumple would give that up. He spent a life time search for Bae, and to give up for a woman that only brings out the darkness in him… I think it’s a total reversal of his character that he would suddenly give up Bae.
I don’t think he did give it up. In the scene where Rumpel and Cora first meet in the tower, he tells her that her daughter is important. He knows that she’s destined to cast the curse. So, even during their brief love affair, he was accutely aware of the curse. He didn’t abandoned his mission to find Bae. Not at all.
midnight drearyParticipantYou can love someone without them being your true love. Rumpel loved Milha, but the writers made it quite obvious that she wasn’t true love. The same goes for Cora. Cora and Milha are representative of Rumpel’s failed relationships. These two women didn’t truly want Rumpel. They both left him for bigger and better things (Milha left Rumpel for Hook and Cora left Rumpel for Prince Henry). Rumpel desperately wants to be loved, so that opens him up to just about any homewrecker that comes along. 😆 But that doesn’t make it true love. Mr. Gold’s phone call to Belle summed it up perfectly. “You really, really loved me.” He emphasized just how much Belle truly loved him. He pointed out that she was the only woman who loved him unconditionally.
In regards to Mr. Gold needing to know if Cora actually loved him, I just saw that scene as Mr. Gold being curious. It’s been 60 or 70 years since the last time he saw her and he’s wants to know if she actually had feelings for him. It was just the idle curiosity of a dying man. He thought he only had seconds to live, so why not ask? The woman is about to kill him for God’s sake and he clearly doesn’t love her anymore. That was made quite clear by his mission to kill her (on numerous occassions).
midnight drearyParticipantGod, I love Jane. 😀 She addressed every single one of my concerns.
midnight drearyParticipantI LOVED THIS EPISODE!!! 😀 …despite some of the ickiness from Rumpel and Cora.
Favorite moments: Mr. Gold’s phone call to Belle, Baelfire crying in his father’s arms, Mr. Gold teaching Emma how to use magic, Emma and Neal’s banter, Snow tricking Regina into taking Cora’s heart, Neal with a sword (swoon), baby Regina, Robert Carlyle’s performance, Lana Parilla’s performance and Rose McGowen’s performance.
Least favorite moments: Rumpel kissing Cora, Rumpel kissing Cora, Rumpel kissing Cora, Rumpel kissing Cora, Rumpel kissing Cora, Rumpel kissing Cora, Rumpel kissing Cora, Rumpel kissing Cora, Rumpel kissing Cora, Rumpel kissing Cora, Rumpel kissing Cora, Rumpel kissing Cora, Rumpel kissing Cora, Rumpel kissing Cora, Rumpel kissing Cora.
midnight drearyParticipantThankfully, no, it wasn’t true love. Did they love each other? Definitely. But Cora refused to sacrifice her lust for power and revenge to run away with Rumpel, and in the end, she almost killed him. So, love? Yes. True love? No.
