What should we divine from that smirk on Regina’s face after she locked up Zelena’s pendant in her vault?
Kitsis: It’s funny that you bring that up. That’s one of my favorite scenes in that episode and maybe the series. What that smirk said was: I won and I like myself today. She used light magic. She went against somebody she didn’t think she could beat. She has Robin Hood (Sean Maguire) and she is making huge strides toward a new life. We wanted to show you a private moment where Regina — who really cast the curse because she felt like she could never win and never find happiness — in that moment alone, she smiles and says, “I won.”
Some fans worried that it meant she might’ve been conspiring with Rumple.
Kitsis: No, that was a genuine moment. It’s hard when you have a show like this because we love to give surprises and twists, but sometimes people read into our genuine moments. Really, she won and she’s happy. Let’s enjoy that for her.
[adrotate group="5"]My first initial thought was that Zelena is not Regina’s sister, but the jilted fiancé or promised one (like through an arranged marriage) of King Leopold’s. That Leopold was to marry Zelena (or so she though) but when Regina saved Snow he changed his mind. And now Zelena wants everything Regina has/had because in her mind it should have been hers. As to how she got to Oz (born there, wizard her father maybe) or why she’s green (green with envy literally) I don’t know. Just my first knee jerk thought as to who she is and the reason for her going after Regina. Hell hath no fury….
I think you may have nailed it! The sister act is was a stepping stone get to Regina (Leopold’s 2nd wife) and possibly manipulate her. Her focus in Storybrooke is on Snow & baby snow (Leopold’s treasured daughter & future grandchild). She sent her #1 Flying Monkey to keep tabs on Emma and Henry (grand child #1 and great grandson) and who knows what would have happened if Emma had married Walsh. Zelena out for everyone that Leopold loved and to extinguish their happiness. If you were to connect the dots to all the characters Zelena is focused on the only common connection is Leopold not Cora.

Yes I agree with you that the connection is Leopold or even possibly Eva. Yep! Also, keeping with the way AE drag out plot twisting connections, there is no way they would reveal Regina & Zelena being sisters within the first 30 minutes of the return to the season – look how long it took for us to officially find out the Peter Pan was Rumple’s dad. The sisters is a “red herring”/misdirection. Also a re-watch of the Miller’s Daughter nixes that Cora had a daughter pre-marriage to Prince Henry or that Rumple could be the father. I’m thinking that she’s the daughter of possibly the Wizard, her sister is Glenda, rejected 2nd fiance of Leopold (or maybe even Prince Henry who married Cora once his dad saw all the gold Cora could spin), and – here’s a major twist:: Rumple’s MOM!! I don’t buy that Rumple was her teacher and she’s out for revenge on him for choosing Regina – there’s a separate agenda there with her & Rumple.
