*clears her throat and looks around lecture theater*

    Alright… okay, serious.

It is not really clear, what the Twitter data means. It seems so far, that there is a correlation between Twitter chatter and people tuning in, meaning lot of buzz on Twitter makes people curious and tune into a program – like when people on the street run and look in one direction we can’t help it but follow, curious to see what is going on. It is assumed that as well Twitter chatter shows engagement, people paying attention to a show while watching it. Research suggests that people tweet more during a show than during advertising breaks, so marketing can relax, at least Twitter doesn’t seem to distract people from watching the great ads they’re producing for much money (although possible there is less Twitter chatter in the breaks, because people don’t pay attention to them and do something else, like rush to get a new bowl of popcorn, just saying – that would be more true for example for Germany, where there are fewer but longer breaks, but Nielsen doesn’t rate in Germany).

One thing to take into account at least at the moment is, that demographics of Twitter and of average TV audience are not the same. Twitter is younger, more urban, more tech-savvy, bit more geeky – but on the other hand, that is a group marketing is much interested in, they are the ones with money to spend (allegedly). Beyond that most of the Twitter chatter is produced by only a small number of people, many Twitter users are more listeners than talkers (although this might partially be due to craze about follower numbers proving something, so there are not just spammers around but a number of accounts just there to increase follower numbers)

At the moment they are measuring number of tweets. Not sure if that includes new-style retweets, but I guess it does, didn’t find info about that yet; very sure it doesn’t include faving a tweet. And they measure how many people theoretically are reached by those tweets, aka unique followers (taking into account, that people have partially the same followers, so it’s not a mere addition of follower numbers of the accounts which tweeted).

Don’t mistake these numbers with what you can see on the Twitter webside as trends. Twittertrends are something different, a relative measure of the impact of a subject, relative to the overall number of tweets send in a certain time frame. In other words: what is popular chat on Twitter at a given moment. Additionally the trends shown are those which are newly popular, meaning, if a subject is popular all day it will likely not be in the trends all day, only if there is a sudden significant increase in chatter again (to not bore us all to death with ongoing Bieber or Cyrus chatter every day). So a show trending (while on air) might be still far from being in the top Twitter TV rating charts, simply when there is little Twitter chatter in that time at all, and because there was very little talk about it before, but all in all it didn’t generate huge tweet numbers. And the trends depend on who you are following and on location (but you can control the latter a little in your settings) More about Twitter trends algorithm.

Now that they’re making money with the data, Nielsen and Twitter are of course not as free with giving data anymore. So haven’t seen any numbers on the web about episode Lost Girl.

Not sure if Twitter, any Social Media can add that much to a more accurate picture of what people watch (quantity of audience). It might put into perspective though eventually the value of high viewer numbers, how much people notice a show (quality of audience). The rating system is mostly important for advertising business and for them reach (quantity) and impact (quality) is interesting. Impact is rather difficult to measure, that is why social media are interesting.

Sorry, the social scientist speaking again 😉

And wanted to post links to two articles, one about first week of Twitter Ranking, the other about Facebook working on their own system

The usual, my own thoughts are not all serious

Rumple (to his shadow): “Hide it where no one can find it, not even me.”

(wonder if that is really such a good idea, trusting your own shadow I mean)

Regina: “You know, I could have just poofed us up here in an instant
(Beam us up, Scotty! Okay, sorry that is a different show)

Snow: “You know, “Mary Margaret” is a bit formal. You could call me “mom” if you want.”
    (Or maybe not)

Hook (to Emma): “Your father is a distrustful fellow.”
(only if it comes to flirting pirates)

Hook: “Pan is the most treacherous villain I’ve ever faced.”
(I knew it! Never trusted that Pan guy)

Hook: “Tell me something, luv. In these stories, what was I like? Other than a villain. Handsome, I gather.”
Emma: “If waxed moustaches and perms are your thing.”
Hook: “I take it by your tone, perms are bad?
(oh, you know in the 80s… but we’re not in the 80s anymore)

Regina: “Where? All I see is jungle”
(happens when you’re in a jungle)

Snow: “After everything your father and I have been through, there’s one thing we’ve learned. It is never too late.”
    (the White Rabbit might disagree)

Regina: “I told you never to disturb me out here.”
Mirror: “Trust me. I haven’t disturbed you yet. Just wait until you see this.”
(Mirror thinking: I can get really scary, honey, if you let me)

Mirror: “Indeed. True love’s kiss apparently c a n break any curse.”
    (shoot!)

Mirror: “That will be one hell of a wedding. There won’t be a dry eye in the entire realm.”
    (you’re so right)

Regina: “Quite the courageous army you’re building.”
    (who needs an army)

Regina: “You really gonna marry that?”
    (You know, love is blind.)

Regina: “Stop denying who you are, Snow White. You may have been a princess, but you will never be a queen.”
(and there I thought being a princess is the ultimate goal of every little girl)

Peter Pan (to Emma): “You’ve got fire. I like fire.”
    (so do we)

Peter Pan: “See, it’s not about finding Henry. It’s about how you find him.”
(a philosopher! the journey is the reward)

Peter Pan: “You’ll be only able to read that map whe you stop denying who you really are.”
(starts singing: I am what I am… Ooops, wrong show.)

Hook: “He so likes his games.”
    (he’s such a player)

Charming: “Sadly I agree with the pirate.”
Hook: “I’m winning you over, I can feel it.”
(so the guys are warming up)

Snow: “I’m no queen. I’m no leader. I’m just a girl who lost her parents, ran into the woods and became a bandit.”
(what a bad… sorry, no foul language)

Grumpy: “Look handsome, she may love you, but that chiseled chin ain’t foolin’ us. We got our eyes on you.”
(sorry, Charming, not everyone is charmed by you.)

Rumple: “Magic can’t make someone believe, dearie. It works the other way around. Belief must come from within.”
(Magic comes with a price… just saying)

Snow: “Come on. You don’t need to be ambarassed to say it.”
    Hook: “Say what?”
    Regina: “The “s” word.”
    Emma: “I’m the Savior”
(that wasn’t that hard, was it.m and it’s not the t-word, phew)

Hook: “For once I agree with the prince”
    (Charming gives him a look)
Hook: “Well I told you we’re getting along.”
(Sense the beginning of a wonderful bromance here)

Regina: “Well, Emma, you said you wanted to be the leader… Lead.”
    (oh, she will)

Regina: “Pan – I can feel his smugness.”
(of course you can. they might be a great match)

Charming: “Shall we? While we still have the element of surprise?”
(surprise parties never are a surprise)

Hook: “Careful. He may look like a boy, but he’s a bloody demon.”
(as bloodsucker he would even get his own show)

Charming: “Well, privacy is a hard thing to come by when you have seven big brothers keeping an eye on you.”
(that is what picnics for two are for)

Snow (to Evil Queen): “But I can’t leave my people. Not. With. You.”
    (nothing personal)

Snow: “Maybe who you think you are isn’t who you really are.”
    Emma: “What do you mean?”
Snow: “Sometimes we think we know ourselves, but we need a push to show us the reality. That boy with the knife… you stopped fighting him. Why?”
Emma: “‘Cause he was… just a boy.”
Snow: “No. There was something else. I saw it in your eyes. Why did you stop? (whispers) Why?”
Emma: “Because when I looked at his face, I saw me.”
    Snow: “Go on.”
Emma: “That look in his eyes… The despair. I had it back when I was in the foster system. Just a lost little girl who didn’t matter and didn’t think she ever would. A little girl who cried herself to sleep at night ’cause… she wanted her parents so bad. And could never understand… why they gave her up.”
Snow: “And then you found us. It was too late.”
Emma: “It’s just, on this island… I… I don’t feel like… a hero or a savior. I just feel like what I’ve always been. An orphan.”
(finally it is out, the truth)

Snow: “It’s okay. It’s the truth. You were an orphan… It’s my job to change that.”
    (good luck with that)

    Rumple “How nauseatingly romantic.”
(the way to someone’s heart is through their stomach…)

Rumple: “Swords a fake, dearie. Shoddy craftsmanship too. But then again, what can you expect from a shepherd. Lucky it wasn’t made out of wool.”
    (better some fake plastic)

Rumple (to Snow): “Enough of your ramblings!”
    (thanks for saying it)

Rumple: “You’re right about one thing, dearie. Everthing comes with a cost, including wasting my time.”
    (Time is money!)

    Hook: “Excellent show of patience.”
    (you have no idea)

Emma: “Is rumm your solution to everything?”
    Hook: “It certainly doesn’t hurt”
    (only the next morning)

Peter Pan: “Don’t eat the blue ones.”
(Yeah, we know where this would take you, away from Wonderland, or back to it, depends on POV. But don’t follow the White Rabbit, unless you like getting into trouble with a certain Mr. Smith. Oh, wait, that was another story realm, movie universe.. I get so confused with all these worlds)

Peter Pan: “You don’t mind if I call you lost girl.”
(Bo has a sister. Oh, right, different show. Again)

Peter Pan: “He hasn’t forgiven you either. By the time you get to him, he’ll never want to leave this island.”
    (you wish)

Peter Pan: “When we’re finished you won’t just feel like an orphan… You’ll be one.”
(looking forward to all the angst in the fandom, after all, they killed Graham)

I wonder if Greg dying from his shadow being pulled from his body, happens to everyone? The dying thing, I mean. Pan’s shadow can leave his shadow, so I guess, it doesn’t always happen. Or maybe Greg and Tamara weren’t the right type of believer Pan needed and that’s why Greg didn’t survive.

Pulling someone’s heart doesn’t automatically kill them, but it can. Guess it is the same with the shadow pulling. Or they simply wrote themselves into the next corner with this. It would have been boring to kill both the same way, we had heard about the shadow ripping before and it was time to show it, to remind that there is a bad shadow around, making sure we know there is serious danger.

Not much of a headache to me.

Most likely Henry told him, mentioned it. They did spend a bit of time together.

Neal read it in Henry’s book.

Possible as well, he heard it in his time in Neverland. We don’t know yet what happened to Neal, after the Lost Boys got him. Lost Boys might have searched in other worlds as well and had information, talked about it, or other travelers might have crossed Neal’s way. Even though Neal was trying hard to avoid his father, or being found by him, I think he couldn’t help but listen up anytime someone mentioned the Dark One.

THO sounds more like the setup for a Marvel or DC comic, it somehow never feels (felt) right for me in the OUaT world. More like using the images of a fantasy world a lot of kids grew up with the past maybe 100 years to manipulate particularly Greg and Tamara (and maybe a few others in our time). And most importantly, it sounds science and real wordly – if you had had bad experience with magic and hate magic it sounds a lot more convincing and like you’re becoming a part of a bigger, secret but still kinda official thing. By now I don’t think that there actually has been an organisation at all, it has been fake all along. Pretty sure Greg and Tamara (and eventually a few others) had been told, that they have to keep up their normal lives as cover, work, blend in, pay for everything themselves, to protect THO and themselves. Practically with Greg and Tamara died the Home Office. It fulfilled it’s purpose: Henry, the person with the truest heart, the one person Pan was after is in Neverland. THO has no use anymore.

Still leaves some questions unanswered, like how they made contact from Neverland with Greg and Tamara, who did the two talked to, where did they get equipment. Although it is said that our world is, or at least had been a world without magic, the OUaT universe does know and has magic in general. And we already had to assume (the dragon for example), that (at least tiny bits of) magic worked in our world outside Storybrook, totally unconnected to Storybrook. So I think most of it was made possible by magic, just that it was made look like non-magic to Greg and Tamara.

Outside the fictional logic of OUaT: It looks to me like they wrote themselves into a corner with the THO and GOAT storyline. It will haunt them for the rest of the show, but I doubt we will get many satisfying answers (remember how unsatisfying The Initiative in Buffy was, and that agency made a lot more sense than THO). Somewhat doubt it was planned like that from the beginning, they adapted when they were sure they can do Neverland. GOAT and THO ended up as posing a bit of a threat for Storybrook for second half of season 2, but their main purpose became to have a way to isolate Henry and take him to Neverland alone. Purpose served, the characters were liked by pretty much no one, so they were killed, and with them, I think, THO died as well as storyline.

Glad to see Greg go (hopefully)

He is gone. Adam Horowitz has confirmed it on Twitter, Greg is dead.

Have the feeling, they wrote themselves into a corner with the whole Home Office, Greg and Tamara storyline. I am not sure, if the two characters were actually planned that way from the beginning, somehow it feels like they adapted the story on the go when it became sure, they can do Neverland (it took them a moment to get the rights). So I fear we will not get any satisfying wrap-up of this ever. Not on the show. Think even if Sonequa Martin-Green had time left besides her role as Sasha on The Walking Dead we would get no more story.

    least fave moments:

    – killing Greg and Tamara and the handling of the whole Home Office story line.

No idea how big they wanted to make that story, if they cut down on it, but it sure leaves me scratching my head. Yes we got Greg’s background story, but we know iota about Tamara. Maybe we will learn more about her, but right now I find the whole story line very, very unsatisfying. Was letting them believe in some ominous home office, which turns out to be pretty much non-existent (no surprise), a pun? Paranoid, dystopian kind of thrillers with some agency called office are bit of a hype, it’s overdue that someone makes fun of it, but it didn’t really come across as pun. Killing the two now was okay as in that they served their purpose (mostly to get Henry alone to Neverland and give a sense of danger). Possible Greg isn’t dead, but this character is too obviously a pawn and plotdevice to actually care about him, maybe useful later again to explain something about the shadow ripping (edit: meanwhile Adam Horowitz stated on Twitter, that Greg is dead). And Tamara? What a waste of character and decent acting. I am not the only one wondering at least a little by now if being of colour is a curse in this show. OUaT is in dire need of more diversity.

    – The storm

Okay, water, any kind of fluid is a tough thing to do in CGI. And faking rain and spray is neither in CGI nor on set easy. The soundmix was, well, you hardly can understand people when wind and rain and ocean is roaring all around you, but still, the dialogue was not unimportant. The cuts, different camera angles, editing alone though did much to make me feel seasick (even though in scenes on the island). Sometimes wish some directors/dp would listen to Bach, immerse in his music and learn something from his art of counterpoint, harmonic and use of motif. Be interesting, dynamic, all fine, but it can be overdone at times. Anyway. The bad about the writing: think not everybody got it, that the storm was connected to and influenced by their emotions, their anger and distrust. Can only guess, that it was not called by the mermaid but something coming onto them anyway.

BTW, think the shell the mermaid grabbed and used as conch was a lobatus gigas, also called queen conch.

And apropos mermaids: Please stop calling them fish! Shsssh. You trespass into their realm as if it’s your very right, you offend them constantly and then you’re surprised they don’t like you? Ya, they attacked without proper warning, but who knows how many have crossed the mermaids before. Think I am going to launch a rights group for merpeople- anyone in? 😉

    fave moments:

    – Emma tackling her parents

Finally. Let it out! And yes, their optimism can drive one crazy at times.

Great acting by all three but especially by JMo

    – Rumple killing Tamara

Yes despite all. Because of what doing so showed about Rumple. Tamara did awful things and sure deserved to be punished, but think we never have the right to decide if someone deserves death, let alone kill them. Rumple was judge and executioner in one. Worse, Tamara showed honest remorse, but Rumple lacked the tiniest bit of mercy. Understandable, he believes he lost his son, that Tamara killed him, but doesn’t make his action any right. This short scene showed that Rumple is in a bad place, he has nothing to lose anymore. Powerful scene.

    – the attack of the mermaids/the storm

yes, I am contradictory. But it was interesting how they reacted to the attack of the mermaids and the threat of the storm

Hook: wanted to outrun, the mermaids and then the storm, and he wasn’t really into a fight with David

David: jumped to action without much of a thought or tactic, grabbed the gun (he loves guns, does he, the knight) and shot; fight, fight hard and something will come up to hopefully turn the tide, could be his motto; and never say something offensive about his loved ones unless you’re eager for a fight

Snow: wanted to show friendliness, empathy, bargain, handle things in a civilized at best non-violent way, but if she runs out of words be aware of her punch

Regina: gives some snarky comments and then rushes to handle things with violent magic, as always

Emma: observes, waits, wonders, thinks but quick on her feet, and then does whatever seems best, run, punch, talk

It was like they set a basic line for everybody in this storm for their time in Neverland. Have seen better action on ships on screen (concerning action acting) but lines were well delivered.

    other things:

In the birth scene at the beginning missed some Starfleet-Officer horn in via communicator, telling sorry, can’t be home darling, have to fight and die as hero (remember Star Trek?). Not to mention I very much expected some blue-white light sparkles surrounding baby Henry (Charmed). 😉

All in all a decent episode and start into a new season. Not rekindling my former love of OUaT though. Never had a thing for Peter Pan and Neverland, found that guy always arrogant, just a spoiled charmer, irresponsible and narcissistic, in what ever version, and the story is rather boring, so not so thrilled about taking OUaT to Neverland, but well, we are there now, and they still might tell some good stories.

The ABC drama was the No. 1 most social broadcast series of the evening with 136,627 tweets, the highest number ever for the show.

Most tweeted about BROADCAST series. Just saying. Most tweeted series of that evening, broadcast and cable, was Breaking Bad (nearly 1.5 million tweets). Not much of a surprise there though, Breaking Bad is considered as one of the greatest TV dramas and it was its final episode.

Numbers are okay for the moment. Don’t know what ABC expected, but they sound like they were okay with it, and that is important, not if we like the numbers.

Looks to me like a 180° turn.

Not all sure if it was done intentionally. They didn’t do it in the cast promo pics, but it is the same, when the Jolly Rogers comes out of the portal. Maybe it would have been too obvious in the promo pics.  The moon being seen from a different angle in Neverland could make some sense.
