ParticipantGrumpy: No funny business. I’m watching you pirate!
Hook: Yes, dwarf. That should deter me from any malfeasance.
(pirates!)Henry (to Gold): It must be really hard not to use magic, being like everyone else.
(normal life is crappy)Gold: How terribly uncivilized.
(he is so right)Hook (to Regina): I’ve been tied up in the bed. Not in the good way.
(you never are)Regina: You lost a giant?
(yeah, well, imagine that)Snow: She is kinda out of town.
(And I am kinda amused)David: No, it’s my name name.
(it is really that simple)James: I’m sorry Jack, I have a kingdom to run. Sure you understand.

ParticipantMy very first after watching this episode the first time: What’s the rush? I wish they would take more time to develop characters, their relationships.
Sometimes wonder, if they really have so many story lines left to tell for a couple of more seasons if they keep throwing nearly every episode a new story line at us as they seem to do at the moment. Okay, it’s a build up for a hopefully grande finale and beyond, and most stories are or maybe will be connected, but nevertheless they are very close to overdoing it in my opinion.
We have the story of amnesiac Belle, nearly forgotten as well kinda amnesiac Sneezy, the story of Greg the stranger, of Cora on a power conquering trip, Regina’s fight for Henry, Hook’s revenge, Rumple’s search for his son, Emma finding her new identity + figuring out (her) magic + getting used to have parents + being a parent herself besides being the one to save Storybrooke, the world and everybody. We have Snow and David having to deal with for a change not being separated for a while. There is the fight between the “evil” team and the “good” team lurking (good and evil can be so ambiguous, especially in this show). There was the Story of Dr. Whale (but guess won’t hear much about him anymore for the rest of the season), Ruby and her grandma are still involved (but somehow now doubt, we get to hear more about them this season). Without closure the stories of Phillip, Mulan and Aurora. Oh, and then there is the still unanswered question of what happened to August. And what about the fairies? And now we have Anton and the possibility of growing magic beans in Storybrooke, which eventually Cora will try to steal. Not to forget what spoilers are telling us or we are hoping for, the whole happy family reunion, or not so happy one, Snow White's mother, young Cora.
Feeling like sitting in an overspeeding carousel. 🙄
Now back to the this episode.
– Jorga Garcia was a joy to watch again
– Hook’s ship has a bit of magic build in, so to speak, well, good to know, not that anyone seemed to have wondered so far
– magic beans aren’t an extinct plant – no surprise there
– what a waste of the character of Jack. I liked the twist with Jack being a woman, and one b@dass of, but just for this one episode?
– James was some charming nasty piece of work. And thanks that they let David muse, if he could have turned out like him if. My opinion: He could have. But good that Snow believes otherwise, because people believing in you is worth a lot. Although have by now the impression, David got a tad too comfortable in the role of warrior, hero and ruling prince as well, there is a subtle arrogance occasionally. As much as I think it was somewhat sterotyped father – mother banter when David and Snow talked in the end about returning (he has trust in Emma’s abilities, she worries about her emotional state; wish they hadn’t done it), it felt somewhat off. Nice that David trusts Emma and wants to give her space, but at some point he should just take her in his arms and hold her. Guys! 😉
– Regina is such a bad liar. And Snow and David are bad in detecting lies. The only thing Regina seemed to be a little surprised about was, that Henry was with Emma. But think she was more angry about it, missed chance to get a hold of Henry.
– Carleyle was again brilliant, his growing distress and insecurity, and his tantrum in the bath was so believable (and very Rumplestiltskin apt). Wonder if he did forget something in the seconds without the shawl, or if he feels like he did, a tiny but important detail. For sure the experience unsettled him, he was vulnerable, totally depending on Emma, nothing he wanted to feel. Mind, he first wanted to go all on his own. Must be utterly frustrating for him. Some nice score music

Keegan Connor Tracy@keegolicious
Attention #DowntonAbbey I will soon be down a series and would be delighted to appear as the Flirty/Evil Canadienne cousin?
Think Keegan Connor Tracy meant the series Bates Motel. Filming was scheduled to end on February 6th. according to BCFilm Commission (Tracy’s tweet was from Feb. 5th). She plays Norman Bates’ teacher and advicer on the show. The 10-episode first season of the series will start airing March on A&E. If there will be more than one season is at the moment unknown.
But go on and come up with scenarios of Blue Fairy’s death. One never knows if and when it might happen 😉

Cora referred to him as Master…a name that has master for a meaning might work.
The mention of names meaning “Master” reminded me of something else. Did anybody else ever notice that the writing on the wall above Regina’s office says “Magister”? That’s Latin for “master” or “teacher” but I always found it odd that they used the masculine “Magister” instead of the feminine “Magistra”. Could there be any significance there?
Latin magister can be translated as teacher, master chief, head, superior, director. In late Roman Empire and Byzantine Empire the magister officiorum was a senior administrative official. You can still find that meaning in the term magistrate. Seeing that the door above which the word is written in Regina’s office leads out of her office think it’s not so much refering to Regina. Simple would say it tells, that behind the door is not a simple floor but the main office of town administration. Figuratively could be a hint that Regina is no master 😉
The first name that came to my mind was Reginald. No idea why. 😆 Than I thought maybe it’s something as common as John. Or something connected to mythology like Alberich (the name of the dwarf who guards the treasure of the Nibelungen). But I like the idea of Gold’s first name being Damien. Has a ring to it.

ParticipantThanks, Nonnie and TimeSpacer for the interesting links. Who says, entertainment is just there to make people numb and dumb. 😉 Just imagine some physics teacher asking class, if they watched Once Upon and wondered about the science refered to in it – and starts a lesson in physics and science history.
The book is definitely on my wish list now.¯\_(?????? ?)_/¯

That’s exactly what I meant. We are talking about fairy tales here and fairy tales are designed to teach us lessons through metaphors. It would be completely logical to use the cane in this way: The magic is his crutch, the cane is a crutch, therefor the cane contains magic. Th
Think we’re talking about different ideas, or draw different conclusions. I was talking about a crutch in a psychological sense. So I used it as a metaphor, right, but as a picture, that Rumple / Mr. Gold thinks he needs something outside of him to rely on, to lean on, something to distance himself from his own actions and maybe feelings, something to help him copy with his feelings of guilt and failure. That is not a conscious decision, it’s a psychological mechanism and process, something Rumpel isn’t controlling. I see the limping as a habit (by now), thus he still needs a cane. In a similiar way magic has become a (psychologcial) crutch to him.
It’s not logical to me to make the cane a magical object. I don’t think it’s magical at all.

ParticipantThis difference between pre-Dark-One Rumplestiltskin (limps, using a simple wooden staff), Dark One Rumple (agile like a trained athlete) and Storybrooke Mr Gold (while cursed and post cursed – limps, using the cane) is so visible, that I doubt that the writers haven’t given it any thought so far. It’s quite an essential mark of the character, of the different personalities of Rumple.
I like the idea, that the knife might be hidden in it, but unfortunaly it is unlikely – just look at the dimensions of the knife, the width of the blade. And in Broken (2×01) we can see him using the knife to summon the wraith while he is leaning on the cane.
Agree with SpinningGold, that Gold might have had access to magic in (still) cursed Storybrooke, regardless when he remembered that there is magic and that he is Rumple. Gold’s shop is full of stuff, and like Regina’s trinkets she brought with her, there probably have been some things carrying magic in Gold’s shop. But, before the curse was broken that was all magic that was there, littel bits captured in things. Wouldn’t see curing his leg high on the list of Gold to use up that little bit of magic. And the same view I have when it comes to create the curse. That Dark Curse was pretty sure some complicate thing, avoiding limping was something rather unimportant to have in it.
Why doesn’t Gold heal himself now, that there is more magic in Storybrooke? Is there something to heal, or something he could heal? Don’t think it is all an act to appear less threatening, although agree he might use it to fool people into believing he is not much of a physical match to any of them, nevertheless think he is limping for real. But that doesn’t have to mean there is (still) a physical reason for it, it could be mental.
We don’t know when Rumple started limping, what happened. Could be he was indeed injured, but doubt that happened in a fight in the Ogre war, otherwise people wouldn’t have called him a coward. They seemed to care little even, that Rumple was having a bad leg. Hook certainly didn’t care, he challenged to fight a man obviously physically no match to him, with a physical handicap and no experience in sword fighting (what an honorable code pirates have). And at least Rumple made it sound like there was little to no empathy from the villagers or town people. It made me wonder, if Rumple’s leg was injured in some very foolish, clumsy way, if that was what saved him from having to fight as some food soldier, if people evenutally thought he inflicted an injury on himself, if maybe he even did it himself to not fight – people do a lot of things out of fear or being desperate out of whatever reason. Could as well be, that Rumple was limping all his life, but that limping was something recruiters of the Duke at some point didn’t take as a reason anymore to be exclude froms serving as soldier. I don’t have an answer, how it happend that Rumple started limping, but I think knowing how would help to understand why Mr. Gold is still limping.
I suspect by now at least it is more of a mental thing. Could be a way to excuse himself. Because he has a bad leg he can’t do all the things a man, a good father normally can do, or should be able to do. I am not saying, there is anything a father should be able to do besides loving his children, but societies have images and create expectations, how a person should behave to fullfil a role, and we internalize many of these expectations. Not even saying, someone with a bad leg can’t do pretty much everything like someone with two uninjured legs. But Rumple might have felt for a long time, that he was failing the people he love, and the limping is as much an expression of failing to do what he thinks a capable man would do, as much as an excuse to fall back onto to avoid any profound reflection, why else he might have done some things or not done. It’s as strange as it might sound the easy way out. A crutch to lean on. As magic is a crutch too.
In other words: the limping is a habit. Something he relys on to make him feel secure. Nothing he does all on purpose, it’s a coping mechanism.
(and if anyone wondered, I do use the different names to distinguish between the different personalities of Rumpel / Mr. Gold, although maybe not always consistently)

Not really keen on seeing another vampire or vampire story, but the idea with Van Helsing showing up as a colleague / friend of Victor sounds attractive.
Victor believed science is stronger than magic, and think that is still an interesting question to explore, in Storybrooke and / or The World without Color.
As they brought up the issue of duality, monster and human, monster or human. Of course that is something they explore with Rumple, Ruby and even with Philipp as well, a classical motif in fairy tales as much as in some Gothic fiction. But Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is another story I could see them do with this setting.
And would love some Edgar Allan Poe touch.
Once upon a midnight dreary …Speaking of Gothic fiction:
Just read that ABC ordered a pilot for “Gothica”, a series which is decribed as a ” gothic soap opera” including elements and figures from Gothic fiction, meaning Frankenstein, Dracula, Jekyll & Hyde, Dorian Gray and others.¯\_(?????? ?)_/¯
