Tweet may, or may not give insight into who will star as Snow's mother, if she is the queen the title refers to.

Doubt that this tells what some think it does (and sometimes I hate talking about spoilers 🙄 )
This casting call info leaked a while ago for this episode
For episode 2.15, the guest role of Edith is being cast. She's 50, kind, and serves a wealthy family whose members think of her as one of their own, and to whom she's very loyal.
source: spoilertv.com
Sounds more like the role for Lesly Nicol, who was born in 1953, and seeing her picture I very much can see her exactly as that character.
Snow was fairly young when she lost her mother, so I guess her mother was more likely in her 30s or maybe 40s. Of course an actress can play a younger character sometimes, but in this case I'm rather sure, that Lesly Nicol is not it.
Connect the dots. Or follow the yellow brick road. 😛
And for more information about casting calls and more spoilers see spoiler section (as long as the episode hasn’t aired). There are already threads about it. Just saying.

I think Ethan will be someone more significant than a random real worlder lured back into town. Didn’t they say that he’ll be recurring with the possibility of sticking around next season, or am I making that up? If so, he’s gotta be someone significant.
Yes, here’s the information from the casting call.
The casting call described him as “a major recurring guest star role with an option for next season […]. A character named Barrett. He’s in his 30s, kind and smart, but also has a very dark side and has beliefs and a way of life that he will fight fiercely to defend.”
I also think that he’s not just some random person but most likely some kind of book character, or possibly just an outsider who visited the town several times before and knows that something isn’t right about it. I think it’s more likely the former though because if he’s just an outsider, I don’t know there’s much he could do besides threatening to tell everyone about Storybrooke but even then I don’t know if people in our world would actually believe him. He could be killed off easily too if they went that route, imo, unless he does turn out to be someone really important like in slurpeez’s theory, but if he’s a book character with some kind of dark powers, it’s a good way to have him become the next Big Bad or one of the next Big Bads for next season.
This season he appears innocent because he is laid up in the hospital possibly seeming like he’s on the verge of dying. I could even see him befriending people that have been connected to the hospital like Dr. Whale, Snow, Belle, and/or the Blue Fairy, and everyone believing that he’s a harmless regular guy until they reveal the twist.
Makes some sense to me. Looking at the casting call it just cries for more than a simple someone from our world.
By the way, the name mentioned in the casting call might be not the name they will use for the character, but it reminded me of Syd Barrett, one of the founding members of Pink Floyd, who wrote such nice songs as ‘The Gnome’ and ‘The Scarecrow’. Both songs are on the debut album of the band, ‘The Piper at the Gates of Dawn’, which includs also the song ‘Matilda Mother’, a song about a kid listening to the mother telling fairy tales. And on the US release you can find the song ‘See Emily play’. Not that this means anything.
Guess the ideas of some people here start to have some affect on my imagination 😉 😆
Sounds like some packed episode with all the stories mentioned in the synopsis. Rumble looking for a way out, Belle stumbling upon Hook, while in her past she goes hunting with Mulan, SnowCharming hunting for a house, and then the story of the stranger. All this in just 45 minutes (just thinking about it takes me more time).
Excited about the flashback story with Belle and Mulan, but wondering, how it will tie in with what’s going on in Storybrooke. So far the flashbacks always had a tie to what we see happening in the episode in Storybrooke, beyond giving more background to one of the characters.

ParticipantSwell! Besides what this news implies, we’re going to learn more about Cora and guess Regina’s background, always like to see one of the Charmed Sisters on screen. Rose McGowan as some practice playing magic, she played not just one of the Charmed sisters (witches) but in one episode of Charmed an evil enchantress (a former life of Paige) and an evil sorceress / witch in the latest Conan film adaption.

ParticipantThanks, TheGoldenKey,hope you had great holidays too, and wish you a good start of the New Year. All the best.
It is rather easy to have some knowledge about German literature when one grew up in Germany and had luckily some good teachers 😉 Besides that I have been interested in fantasy (and science fiction) literature, movies, TV shows for a while now, so aquired a bit of knowledge over time. I hope Once Upon a Time will give us a lot more to discover and talk about, looking forward to more chats.
Looks like we have a different understanding of folklore, wouldn’t call Goethe’s work folklore, not even parts of it, but agree, that some of his motifs made way into folklore, like the image of a sorcerer’s apprentice conjuring powers he can’t control. Well, it’s one of the poems maybe everyone in Germany had and has to analyse at school and eventually learn to recite.
Would call the connection made by some between castle Frankenstein near Darmstadt and Shelley’s novel folklore, but a modern one, at best maybe told the past 70 years. There is no prove of Shelley ever having known about the castle nor about Dipple, it’s all speculation based on some assumptions of two authors (Scheele and Florescu, possible one based his ideas even on the other) – but, okay, there is no way to disprove, that she knew, she did indeed travel the Rhine and came within maybe 20km of the castle. It is an interesting question, why Shelley choose the name Frankenstein, but why should it have to do anything with a real excisting place? In the novel Dr. Frankenstein’s home and lab is not in a castle by the way, that is the invention of later movies. And sorry for more nitpicking, but Ewers didn’t write about a female Frankenstein, his Frankenstein was very male as well, only the “monster” he created was female, whose monstrosity mostly was being very beautyful but amoral (hmmm) and created by in vitro fertilization (edit: without consent, so like in Shelley’s novel can ask, who the real monster is, while Shelley barely called Frankenstein’s creation a monster, it’s a term used by others). If you like, can see parallels in Ewer’s novel to Regina’s story.

Kitsis and Horowitz never cease to amaze me. We not only get a wonderful storyline and series, but if we are open and pay attention to all their clues, they take us on an educational journey that money just can’t buy! Love them!
Not sure, if what we see and find are all intentional clues by Kitsis and Horowitz, think we might see more than there is occasionally, but that shouldn’t reduce the fun to discover and dig into it. It’s inspiring, I too am amazed and thankful for what they do with this show.

I know there many far more intelligent and much better at writing then I am. So I was wondering what connections could be made from Neal Cassady to literature, movies etc. If anything has is a repeat then pardon I meant no disrespect more than anything I would like to know what are the thoughts etc.
I found this. It seemed the life seemed correlate greatly with the character. However I am sorry to say I have not read these particular works but I am going to attempt to. I was wondering if there might be any indication to who Neal might be.
Thank you.
Don’t be too impressed, has nothing to do with intelligence, it’s just a bit more knowledge aquired and maybe writing practice. :ugeek:
There has been some talking about a possible reference to Neal Cassady before. But don’t worry, think that discussion isn’t all finished, so okay to bring it up again. In my opinion might be though not much of a story there, just a nod to a cultural icon. Kitsis and Horowitz said, that the Rolling Stones inspired them to the title of episode 2×07 (Child of the Moon) as much as it inspired some of the set design on that very episode (producers podcast). Rolling Stones -> beat generation <- Neal Cassady. Just saying. Probably would be very interesting to learn, what other music and bands Kitsis and Horowitz like to hear (know of Led Zeppelin besides Rolling Stones), what movies, shows, books had influence on them. ;) @Faux Pax wrote:
What I see neither is Bae having magic like Emma – how so? Doubt he was a child of true love.
But what about Henry? If Neal is Bae and if he is Emma’s true love, then couldn’t that mean he has his own kind of magic? And if we consider the fact that Emma is the end of the curse, but Bae was the beginning, then it could have interesting implications for just what kind of magic he has.
Well, let us concentrate on Bae here, maybe? I can follow you with the thought, that Bae is at the beginning of the curse and Emma at the end, with or without magic, and could be an interesting kind of meta-story one way or the other if Bae is Neal and thus Henry’s father, but that still doesn’t make me think of Bae having magic – and that is what I am talking about, no if Henry has or Emma.
There were no signs before, that Bae had magic, he only used magic once attempting to get his father back – and the means were given to him by the Blue Fairy. Alright, we haven’t seen much of Bae to be any sure about it, but that would be a more cynical twist in my opinion to let Bae himself have magic. His parents, Rumple and Milah hadn’t a true love romance as far as we know (maybe they thought so at first, but seeing where their relationship went hardly can call it true love),so what should have made Bae have magic?

You have to remember, too, that Eddie, Adam and the other writers are telling their version of the story. Not mine or the fans. There are so many differing opinions that I really feel they can’t appease different fan groups. They have to go with what they want to write.
Very much agree with that. Furthermore: As I see it, it is their work, they are the ones putting in many hours of work for this show and not us. Yes, they get paid for it, but that doesn’t make them slaves to our wishes. We don’t depend on watching the show, but they depend on their work. So whatever they do, whatever stories they write, I am sure they never do it without regards and respect to what fans and critics are saying about their work. But if they follow all voices they only can mess up, they have to make choices – and these choices will please some people and some not. Talking about ethics here? Alright, then we should show some respect for those putting in much hard work to create the stories we merely consume (and I think there are different reasons why people enjoy fiction, here in the form of a TV series, distraction is just one of them).
Now about ships not sailing … Not much of a shipper anyway, and more likely it would affect my enjoyment of the show at the moment, if some ships would sail. 😉
Besides that some of the ships I would go for, if for any, I expect to never going to happen, quite simply, because they would stress the tolerance of a number of viewers. I am very much used to ships not sailing, only in fan fictions and personal dreams.

For the most part, people seem to easily ship two people together if they have one scene together and good chemsitry. I like the different types of relationships–True Love romantically, mother and son, mother and daughter, father and daughter, brother and sister, best friends, and worst enemies.
Exactly!

I’m fairly certain that they made a point of letting us know that Reggie was not only the sorcerer’s apprentice but also Rumple’s Frankenstein monster. A few things stand out about 2×05, The Doctor. Rumple calls Reggie his apprentice when he says “excellent work my apprentice”. Rumple goes even further by stating to Dr. Frankenstein “thanks to your efforts, I’ve made my monster.”
So we have Reggie as both the Frankenstein monster and the sorcerer’s apprentice.
Both these stories originated in old German Folklore. Sorcerer’s Apprentice in German is “Der Zauberlehrling”. Disney’s sorcerer’s apprentice came from the German poem “Der Zauberlehrling” by Goethe. It is quite often compared to Frankenstein in that an inanimate object comes to life. Note that David Anders tweeted a clue about his character as being “fully inanimate”.
*Puts on her academic cap and looks over the rim over her glasses*
That the novel ‘Frankenstein, The Modern Prometheus’ by Mary Shelley or the poem ‘Der Zauberlehrling’ (The Sorcerer’s Apprentice) by Goethe originate in old German folklore is rather new to me. I know there is the rumour, that Shelley visited castle Frankenstein near Darmstadt and on the way heard stories from locals about Johann Konrad Dippel, a German theologian, alchemist and physician, but that is unproven and more likely the product of some creative minds (can offer you an interesting article in German about the making of the myth of castle Frankenstein as inspiration and place for Shelley’s Frankenstein). More than obvious is the inspiration by the myth of Prometheus. And it is said, that Goethe might have been inspired by a novel of an ancient greek author, Lucian. But I’m always open to learn, so I’m wondering what your source is.
Goethe’s poem and Shelly’s story show resemblance, seeing that in both someone conjures powers they can’t control, as there are resemblances to the jewish folklore of a golem and to Goethe’s Faust, in which the former student of Doctor Faust, Wagner, creates an homonculus. Would say the resemblance to Goethe’s drama Faust are stronger than to the poem, but that is my opinion. Not sure if the writers thought of both when writing 2×05, but very well one can feel reminded of them watching the episode.

Another German book, called “Der Zauberlehrling”, by Hanns Heinz Ewers, was the first in a trilogy. It was inspired by Goethe’s poem of the same name. The second book, called Alraune, was based on the Frankenstein myth and was about a female Frankenstein type monster (Rumple’s female monster Reggie).
I am surprised someone on this board has heard of the works of Hanns Heinz Ewers. It’s hard to get the horror triology you mentioned as books, has become only easier now as ebook. Ewers has a bit of a bad reputation, not just because of his somewhat difficult (political) views, but as well because of his work, his horror novels were quite graphic.

Okay, where were we … Baelfire liking or not liking magic, using or not using magic, having or not having magic. Or something.
Can’t see a connection of Baelfire to the Sorcerer’s Apprentice. That would imply in my opinion, that Bae would try or tried to use magic to satisfy whatever wish or need he had or has, while overestimating himself. Now you could argue, he did so with the bean, but it’s not like it couldn’t have worked well, his father, Rumple was the one to shrink back, that was not Bae’s fault, no overestimating of his powers here. If anything he made the fault to trust the wrong people (if you like, the Blue Fairy, but more thinking of his father here).
What I see neither is Bae having magic like Emma – how so? Doubt he was a child of true love.
