I think the fact that August is now wooden is going to be a perfect opportunity to repeat his story. I think he’s going to be on a redemption quest, and that’s going to involve repairing the Swan-Cassady family.
[adrotate group="5"]naomiParticipantNeither Neal or August would have known they were saving “magic”. No one knew Rumple would be bringing magic into this world, but Neal probably knew that breaking the curse would free Emma’s parents.
naomiParticipantSo Eddie Kitsis and Adam Horowitz were recently asked about the box in their Official Podcast. Here’s what Eddie said:
“The question I have is…what could he possibly see in there…what would August possibly know that would make him give up on the woman he loves? It’s gotta be something.” – Eddie KitsisThey also said they were going to reveal what was was in there “before the end of the year”. (Year or season? Year, I hope. 😉 )
They hardly revealed anything, but just thought I’d post it for inspiration. Theorize away!
naomiParticipantFavorite part: The scene where Neal gives Emma the keychain and her reaction.

I think it may have been a picture of the dagger, but it could be a fairy or a shadow. Whatever it was, it convinced me that Neal is Bae. Emma took her son being poisoned to make her believe. Neal just looked into a box to make him believe. He looked more resigned than shocked at whatever he saw. Emma was freaked out. So that makes me really think he is Bae.
I saw a lot of hurt in his eyes. It was almost as if whatever he saw brought back really bad memories. That’s why I’m also inclined to believe it is the picture of the dagger, He must have assumed the curse August was talking about had been cast by his father, and so it was his duty to set things straight.
You bring up a good point. Whatever was in the box…August didn’t try to use it to convince Emma about magic in Season 1. I wonder why? Either because it wouldn’t have triggered the same response in her (i.e. the picture of the dagger). Or maybe he lost said magical item and couldn’t show it to her (i.e. Tinkerbell/the shadow flew away)? 😕
naomiParticipantJust thinking out loud here…
August’s license plate is from Kansas.
Maybe it’s something from Oz-related? Ruby slippers? A flying monkey? LOL. I think it’s time for me to give up and go to sleep.
naomiParticipantAgreed. I know a lot of people are shipping Emma and Capt. Hook, and I can sort of understand that because Hook is a wonderfully snarky villain and downright one of the most hilarious and entertaining characters on this show.
But, I feel Neal and Emma have to be endgame. They just have to! Maybe it would have been OK if Neal was a murderous criminal, or was married, or if he had lied to her about being a thief, etc. but after watching the episode and seeing that he was really sincere and honest…it breaks my heart.
Feel really sorry for this guy. Bae never seemed to catch a break in life (mother left, war, father becomes the dark one, trapped in a world alone)…
^^^ Bae is definitely the producers’ punching bag. If I could attend one of public conferences the writers go to (like Comicon or Paleyfest) I would wear a shirt that says STOP HURTING HIM. Lol.
ETA: I just realized that Emma spent two years in Tallahassee after she left prison. She was probably still waiting for Neal.
Yup. There goes my heart.

If Emma truly loved Neil, why wouldn’t it have worked as a kiss between the two? Why did it have to be Emma and Henry?
I agree. I’m very confused by this. The way I interpreted it…Emma needed to use TLK in Storybrooke to break the curse, and the reason it was so difficult is because she couldn’t love at first. And she couldn’t believe in magic.
But Neal sure as hell believed in magic (after he saw whatever was in that box. Grrr.). So he could have helped her believe. With the help of August, both of them would have known about the curse, and both of them could have used TLK. It would have been so much easier!
Otherwise, if we think about August’s plan to separate Emma from Neal, thus leaving her alone and bitter…how could that possibly guarantee that she would go to Storybrooke on her 28th birthday? Especially since August didn’t know that Emma was pregnant with Henry when he separated them. Did he plan to knock on her door in Boston and say, “Hi, I was the boy who found you as a baby. You need to break a magical curse.”
But maybe Emma had to find true love in Storybrooke. Maybe “the first-born child of Emma Swan” was written into the curse and had to be brought to Storybrooke in order for the curse to be broken.
Eager to hear more interpretations, because at the moment I’m lost. 😕
naomiParticipantI don’t know if I’m glad Neal turned out to be…completely good. LOL. On one hand, it means that there’s a chance for Emma and Neal to reconnect after/if he shows up in Storybrooke (and a chance for Henry to have a father!) But on the other…the fact that he really loved Emma just makes their break-up all the more painful. I find it really sad that he didn’t know she was pregnant.
Lil’Red, I will stand with you in that delusion. How else would it make sense? Did August have a pet dragon in that box? A ogre head? WHAT
naomiParticipantAt least we know the origin of the postcard, finally!
The writers really didn’t us many hints that Neal might be Bae, as popular as that theory is. I guess we’ll have to wait and see. On that note, I wonder if Rumple will be equally as suspicious as we are…considering Neal received his postcard and will probably show up in Storybrooke sometime soon.
What I don’t quite understand is why Emma had to even go to prison. Was it to deter her from a life of crime? Because otherwise, what if Neal just ditched her? She would have waited and would have still been really hurt when she realized that she had been abandoned. But at least she wouldn’t have been locked up…
