Not sure if I believe myself, but here goes. 🙂 I think that Barrett could be Bae, and that it’s not so farfetched. Yes, this is yet another the-new-character-must-be-Bae post. But here’s why.
While I do love the all the Bae theories so far (especially the Peter Pan ones!), I think that a crucial aspect of Bae’s character is that he hates magic. In The Return, we saw that he wouldn’t let his father heal the scrape on his knee. Later on in the episode, Rumple asks him what kind of world the bean will take them to, and Bae answers, “A better one.”
Most importantly, it was when August tried to use magic that Rumplestiltskin – immediately and without a doubt – realized that August was not his son.
So I don’t think this character quirk is something the writers would easily renege on. Plus we now know that magic brought a lot of pain into Baelfire’s life: it was used to force children to war, ruined his father, was used to kill his mother (even if he doesn’t know this)…and I’m thinking that whenever Bae comes into the picture, he will be furious at Rumpel for bringing magic to our world. He might even be ready to fight to “remove” magic from our world and defend his magic-free lifestyle. If defending a way of life is in the casting announcement describing Barrett (plus the fact that Barrett is a major recurring character), I think he could be Bae.
Also, I think it would make Bae an interesting foil to his father. Rumple is crippled by cowardice, and thus inseparable from magic; he has even given magic to others (like Regina and Cora) despite knowing the risks. Bae is brave, and if he despises magic wholly and completely, it will be interesting to see how father and son reconcile, and if true love can exist between them even though they are at such different extremes in so many ways.

I think some sort of understanding between Rumple and Bae will be endgame, ultimately, but it’s going to be a very looooong and difficult road before we get to that.
naomiParticipantI agree – I really think Bae ended up in our world. For now. 😉
I mean, it was alluded to (with the Looking Glass, and Jefferson’s hat, etc.) that there were multiple ways of travelling to-and-from different worlds; as long as the world you left and the world you arrived in both had magic. Rumple was probably aware of those methods…I’m almost certain he knew people who could get to Wonderland and Neverland…But then how would the writers explain why he couldn’t reach his son? He could visit those worlds but he didn’t try? Or he tried looking in Wonderland, that “specific annoying little world”, but missed Bae? That he cast the curse by mistake and brought Bae over with everyone else in FTL? Or maybe Bae learned how to travel between worlds independently of the curse? All interesting possibilities…but to me it’s one too many twists. I really think Bae ended up in the land without magic. And most importantly we have to remember – Bae doesn’t like magic. Even simple magic to heal a scraped knee.
BUT that doesn’t mean boring old non-magical Bae can’t still have an amazing story. 😀 Bae is still a “lost boy” after all, which might hint at his role in the future. We still know he’s brave, to a fault. That he thinks he can fight. I can’t wait to see where they take his character!
And yes, I am aware that this thread is not about Bae, but the Mystery Man. My two cents: I wouldn’t mind if Michael Raymond-James plays a major character like Baelfire, because he’s a powerhouse actor and all the emotional scenes would be amazing.
naomiParticipantThere seem to be a lot of clues that the Mystery Man is the White Rabbit. And…I don’t think that idea is too farfetched, if the symbolism is taken less literally. Some time ago people were theorizing that Emma was supposed to be the “Alice” in the show, and that Storybrooke was her “Wonderland”. This is meant figuratively, of course, rather than the actual “Wonderland” we’ve already seen with Jefferson and Regina.
If that’s correct, then who would be Emma’s White Rabbit? Someone who can travel between worlds – as he did in the Lewis Caroll version – and causes her to fall down the rabbit hole. Henry’s father perhaps?
As a completely separate idea: If he is the White Rabbit, wouldn’t that make him loyal to the king and queen of hearts? I’ve heard on the podcast that people were thinking that the Queen of Hearts was actually Cora. It might be interesting if this “Mystery Man” was part of a group who helped Cora get to Storybrooke…
