Yeah, @hjbau I’m with you there. If this is what TL is, by all means let them have at it.

At this point Pod!Emma and Captain Personality seem to make as good a match as anyone else. It’s sad that over the development of CS the show runners had to dismember Emma’s character to the point where all that is left is an emotionally stilted, intellectually and morally incompetent husk of the former strong but complexly vulnerable woman she was in the first seasons. But yeah. Much as I no longer have any stakes in Emma’s character, I still don’t want to see CS canonized. Ugh.

@POM – yup, all that. Not to mention that from the in story perspective Belle’s decision to seek help from Zelena is to me borderline reprehensible. I mean go to Emma. Or Regina if you want dark magic. No matter how much you disagree with your hubby, going to the person who kidnapped and tortured him only to then kill his son seems so… Frankly, just so darn stupid and irresponsible. Same as her buddying up with Hook. I don’t like what they did to Rumple’s character but there’s a bit of an issue when Belle’s friendships are consistently wit Rumple’s main enemies.

So, on the one hand, I’m excited Robbie Kay is back — Pan was a great villain. On the other hand, I am somewhat less excited about where I think this whole thing is going. I have a very strong suspicion that, as the show is seemingly working very hard to redeem Zelena, they are going to once again use Rumple as the foil — the entrenched villainous-villain — the same way they did when they were trying to make Hook look better. And while I understand why the show runners might outsource this role to Robert Carlyle: he’s an amazing actor, and can probably pull off being interesting to the audience despite his character’s utter lack of development. But only up to a point. Anyway, I hope they pull off something more original than what they’ve done with Rumple (and Rumbelle) for the last 2 seasons, but it looks like they’re already backtracking to the tried and true version of that same damn story.

I thought this was a pretty good episode overall, though I think there are some weird muddy premises in there that I don’t know how I feel about.

    Liked:

The Mills women. I adore Barbara Hershey, and she just does Cora so well — from the icy Past!Cora to the repentant UB!Cora. Lana and Bex were also wonderful and the scenes with the three of them were mostly really good

    Cruella punching Emma.

The return of Peter Pan, terror that he is. I am actually looking forward to seeing what he and Rumple will be up to.

    Mixed:

I don’t know about the message that what Zelena really needs is to find a “new love” with Hades. With the presumption that this is somehow a replacement for the love she’s missed out from Cora? As if romantic love and mother-daughter love are somehow the same sort of thing? And what about baby Pistachio, wouldn’t that be a more logical source of completion for Zelena? Unless this is set up as something that, in retrospect, will turn out to be bad advice. Narratively speaking, warnings from the dead should probably be taken seriously — when Cora says she thinks that something about this place has “warped” Hades, perhaps she’s right?

    Disliked:

Babies as props. Seriously. Robin wandering around the woods logging a car seat. I mean, this is so utterly hilariously ridiculous, I can’t even. Or leaving the baby on the hood of a car. In the rain. Just sitting there. Someone, for the love of all that is holy, get Robin to a babywearing class. It’d be such a useful skill to have, seeing how he insists on using a bow.

Oy, the Rumple/Belle scene. No idea where this is going, but I suspect more of the same. More of the same Rumple’s gonna Rumple, and Belle is going to throw a tantrum as soon as she finds out. I am so so sad to say this, but I am so utterly sick of the repetitive writing for the Rumbelle plot. At this point, if the writers decide to do another “Rumple for the evilz all the way” storyline in this arc as well, they are just wasting the audience’s time.

    @Phee
, I’m with you. I can’t help but feel that OUAT is trying really hard to make me ship Zades, which makes me conclude that it’s up to something. I don’t trust this one bit.

David usually makes me yawn and/or roll my eyes these days, but the second James got outta that car, I was interested.

Looks like Josh Dallas is having a lot of fun with the role.

Nice try, but the Pregnancy for Regina seems out of the question. She cursed herself to not bear a child against Cora in season 4. Remember?

I do — and if that wasn’t a set up for a future narrative arc that would reverse the effects of this decision, I don’t know what is. Not to mention that this wouldn’t be the first time OUAT retconned something it previously presented as axiomatic. There’s always a loophole, and all that.

Anyway, I think it’s definitely a plot line they might pursue at some point, if the show runs that long. But I can also see how they wouldn’t go there right now. There’s a baby boom on the show as it is — maybe there’s an allotted baby quota they can’t exceed?

I’m not sure what to make of that third tweet unless he’s hinting that Robin can come back (which in light of a few things has upped it chances by a hair) but the second one does seem to indicate a death-goodbye scene.

My cookies are on a Robin death/Regina pregnancy combo, where Robin sacrifices himself for Regina/offspring. Or something in that vein.

This makes it look like Regina is clearly in the wrong yet the show will play it as Regina having the right to do this. I hate when the show gives Regina a holier than thou attitude because it makes her more unlikable.

Yeah, I thought that was really weird framing too. Unless it’s a sign that the show runners are now growing bored with Regina, and Zelena is the new redemption-bound-villain shiny.

Also, @Slurpeez, a million times THIS. I am so sick of the redemption-by-baby trope. Please. Someone. Make them stop.

<p style=”text-align: left;”>Late to the party as well so RG and others have already summed up much of the problems with how this LGBT relationship was handled. So I have a slightly different point.

<p style=”text-align: left;”>It annoys me to no end that we all sort of accept that a particular character is Disney property and hence “untouchable.” LETA not forget that Disney is a giant capitalist machine with quasi-colonial sensibilities that appropriates stories from a common cultural patrimony and makes a profit. By trying to control how these characters are then used and by whom it tries to privatize that commons. There is plenty of litigation around this very question — what specifically can and cannot be used in other media products. Not to mention that with Mulan’s story we have the added bonus of cultural appropriation.

<p style=”text-align: left;”>So I would have LOVED to see A&E push back in some way.

I have a theory about ZELINA’S father…. I think Cora is going to reveal that ZELINA’S dad is actually RUMPLE …. as evidence by … ZELINA having magic from birth … Zelina’s RED hair. I think RUMPLE had disappeared for a brief time, Cora thinking she had been abandoned slept with the gardener telling him she was PG but it is actually RUMPLE’s child. Big eewwee factor with ZELINA holding Rumple hostage and causing her brother’s death…. …. this is my theory I am and I am sticking to it. . .

lol I sure hope not. But I also think they burned that bridge with the captivity plot — unless the network is really trying to push the envelope on what they mean by “family” show.

Also if Zelena were Rumple’s 2nd born, Hades could just claim her by virtue of the contract. No need for elaborate seduction schemes.

More realistically I think it’s going go turn out that Regina and Zelena met in the past. Either way it’s going to be the retcon of the century.
