Maybe Merlin will be Evanna in disguise?
Exactly! Or, in reverse, for Evanna to be Merlin in disguise. Either way, it would make Rumple and Lily half-siblings (lets not think too hard on that one), with the added benefit of firmly anchoring Mal to the Charming/Stiltskin family baobab. How bout them apples?
[adrotate group="5"]nevermoreParticipantI don’t see why she’d be surprised though. Mal is a dragon. She mated with a dragon. It seems simple enough that Lily would be a dragon. Plus, ya know, she hatched from an egg. Mal must have known.
You’re right, that makes sense. I couldn’t quite remember what her sense of “awe” was about, just that it was there — but yes, it’s probably simply that she was seeing her daughter in dragon form for the first time. And obviously their fundamental species-similarities would be a source of delight for Mal. I’m still curious whether Papa Dragon is, like Mal, a humanoid (if he’s Merlin then obviously he is), and if so, whether Mal knew that.
nevermoreParticipantWhat if Lily was conceived when Maleficent was in human form? Her father might just be a regular human.
This might have been mentioned by someone already, but did Maleficent seem surprised that Lily had the capacity to turn into a dragon? Obviously, I’ve no idea what the genetics of “weredragons” might be, but either the surprise means that without special training it isn’t that easy, or that papa dragon might be more human (or differently “were”) than Mal. Unless I’m misinterpreting Mal’s reaction.
nevermoreParticipantI think its a given on this show. Have we ever had ONE season where the villain wasn’t related to the main cast?
Yup, exactly. And the other thing OUAT likes to do is combine multiple characters into a single one. So I could see how Morgana turns out to ALSO be Guinevere as well as Rumple’s mom. 😛
nevermoreParticipantHook: “Dried up….dead…and useless.” Emma: “That’s it! I knew since then he was the one.” CS Baby: “That doesn’t sound like love to me…” Emma: “What are you talking about, the chemistry was like, so totally there the entire time and if you didn’t see it, you’re just blind or something. Gah, such a hater. Whatevez.”
lolz!!! That’s brilliant.
Also, @Rainbow — I totally forgot that this was the circumstances of their first meeting. This actually makes me think that when the writers introduced Hook, they didn’t have a clue they were going to do CS. Because really, there’s no way to “pretty” that one up. The only solution is to sweep it under the rug, and pretend it was like that when they found it.
Jane has talked about Hook and Spike’s similarities and how that helps her understand and write Hook (which makes me vomit but moving on)
Well, now that’s just depressing. I suppose they both favor long leather trench coats and guy liner? Seriously, though — they did both start off as villains, but the crucial difference is that Spike was originally comic relief. And the show kept his deeply flawed, humorous, and pretty self-reflexive side when they developed the character into a regular. At the same time, when he’s not posturing, he’s got some pretty insightful commentary on the other characters and their relationships. I think OUAT tried to do this with Hook, but without the humor, and these relatable flaws, it makes him come off as spewing banalities.
The problem is that the writers try to give Hook too many desirable qualities which are mutually exclusive: you can’t have a rogue without humor, the smoldering dark’n’handsome heartthrob without convincing internal conflict, or the wizened sage without… well, earned wisdom, and you can’t have all three together (the rogue trickster can’t be wise, the sage can’t be a conflicted heartthrob, and the conflicted heartthrob can’t be humorous and tricksy)
nevermoreParticipant1) Where did Emma go?
Either the DO vault or Camelot, I suppose.
2) What is Merlin’s backstory?
Considering that in the original story he is sired by an incubus, I’d love to know who daddy dearest will be in OUAT.
I’m not sure about the origin story, but I’m going to guess that Merlin is currently entombed/imprisoned somewhere (by whoever stands in for Niviane) — and this is why he’s never seen, and only shows up as a column of blue and red smoke. Now, wouldn’t it be a hoot if Niviane were the Blue Fairy?
3) Will we see Arthur/Guienvere/Lancelot?
The first two, yes. Lancelot only in passing or briefly mentioned.
4) Who was the original Dark One?
Whoever was the lucky person Merlin tethered the original darkness to. Total crackpot: Keeping with Arthurian legend, how about Mordred? Then, as he betrays Arthur, and is slain by him, Arthur becomes the next DO. It’s preposterous in terms of timeline, but that’s never stopped A&E before
5) Who will have control of Emma’s dagger?
I would like it to be Henry. Or the Charmings. But I think it’ll probably be Hook. Although it might at some point be stolen by Lily to enact her plans for revenge against the Charmings, and also to tie in that plot line with her search for her father.
6) Will we see Zelena again? Will we see August again? Will we see Ursula again?
Yes, Maybe, No. I think Zelena will die in childbirth, thus reconciling with Regina at the last moment (the price of fertility vs the price of infertility and all that sort of universe balancing itself out creepiness). Then Zelena is out of the picture, and the problem for OQ is solved.
August might show up for two seconds to further the plot.
We will never see or hear of Ursula ever again. *sigh*
7) Will we other lands besides the EF and (maybe) Camelot?
Avalon? Faery?
8) Who is Lily’s father?
Merlin. Who was probably stuck in dragon form through some kind of magical plot device, and hence doesn’t actually remember fathering Lily.
9) Will Rumple wake up? When?
If he does, it will probably be midway through the season.
10) Will Henry get a new quill?
Nope. And the fact that he’s the new author will never be mentioned again.
11) Is the Apprentice dead?
As a doornail.
12) How will the SB gang find Emma?
They will try to summon Emma and find that for some inexplicable reason it doesn’t work. They will then figure out some way to follow the “tether” between Emma and the dagger, which will point to where she is. We will then be introduced to yet another magical way to travel between the realms that we had no idea about, and off they go. The Scooby gang will consist of Hook, Regina, Robin, Henry, and maybe Charming. The rest will stay in SB.
nevermoreParticipantWhich of course we aren’t supposed to do because “it’s just a TV show” and we’re supposed to just “sit back and enjoy the ride.” Cause media isn’t worthy of being critiqued!? Because it makes them uncomfortable to admit that their favorite show/character has some very serious problems and therefore let’s IGNORE THEM (sigh. I’m in a bad mood tonight)
This. Don’t you just hate it when you’re told to ‘sit back and enjoy the ride?’ It’s like the kissing cousin of “don’t you worry your pretty little head about it.” The thing that annoys me with OUAT and its fandom (present company excluded) is precisely the fact that any “issue” with the show, be it consent, problematic characterization, morality, double standards, race/gender/class… whatever, is never addressed by the show itself, but is instead left to be an actively divisive question that gets the fandom growling at each other, and whenever the show runners get confronted with it, they try to either deny it was their intent, or bicker about definitions.
Watching and following OUAT is like being in a relationship with a manipulative sociopath.
And that is why I appreciate Game of Thrones. Sure, it’s got issues in spades, but it’s actually honest about them.
nevermoreParticipantt makes me think that what we need is a thread where it is ok to actually be critical of Hook because it feels like there’s a bit of a gag order (imposed and policed by certain people who flip out if you dare suggest anything bad about him, but also get up in arms if you suggest that maybe those he’s in conflict with aren’t the worst of the worst and totally deserving of every bad thing happening to them, but most of all that he did to them.
lol. That’s actually amusing, in a sad sort of way (about the gag order bit). Sadly, though, I don’t think such a thread is possible, unless it has a very boring title that has nothing to do with Hook at all. Maybe it could start as a discussion of a ship that never even made it to the docks — like Grumpy and that pink fairy, remember, from S1? Surely, no one will have particularly strong feelings about that one, and hence won’t click. Right?
On a serious note, I think this particular thread has sort of become the grab-bag for all OUAT “dissenters” — not only people who are Swanfire shippers, but anyone who is articulating a critique of the show. The treatment of Neal is the center of gravity around which most of these critiques rotate, because it’s so damn symptomatic of everything that has gone wrong with OUAT and has made a show that is obviously beloved by many so distressingly irritating.
I personally appreciate the “safe space.” My limited experience of CSers (I don’t know if SQ is similar) is that they tend towards a “if you’re not with us, you’re against us” online presence, while simultaneously feeling victimized by all the “minority” ships. *Sigh*
I honestly do not expect the writing to suddenly improve just because they have one new, inexperienced voice on the team for next season–but I can’t help but feel Vasquez leaving is still a good sign, because between her writing the Hook backstory graphic novel and the episodes she’s done and things she’s said in interviews, I’m feeling a bit hopeful that the writers might be gearing up for another change, some kind of “reset” to where the story went in the last season.
Ah! That’s fascinating. I was wondering this exact thing, i.e. whether there was a couple of writers who were super pro-Hook. Mystery solved! Of course, her leaving isn’t necessarily a sign that things will suddenly improve. I’m sure they have a party line. Although I also have the impression that the right hand doesn’t always know what the left one is up to.
nevermoreParticipantYa kno, I was just thinking what if the Darkness feeds off the love/goodness in a person’s heart? Rumpel had been the DO for 3 centuries and had very little of it left. Then Bae dies. So he has even left. The Darkness was almost complete and Rumpel was changing drastically.
Yep. It can also help explain the apparent floundering. (As in, no, it’s not bad writing, it’s the curse!)
The darkness is “alive” in some way–it was seeking someone out and seems to have deliberately chosen Regina
Yes, but that’s really the question. If you don’t know the nature of something, it might appear purposeful when it’s actually just following some kind of basic law of physics. (I’m blanking on a good example. Pulsars, maybe?). The darkness could be seeking some kind of baseline condition. Knowing OUAT, it will be BOTH *twitch*
nevermoreParticipantSome speculated that Hook could either be or be the son of Davey Jones.
Ha! I love it. And while we’re at it, why not aim big?
