ParticipantIf he gets enough magic, he can be free of the dagger’s control–the chief limit to his powers. He can be free and keep his powers…But it’s also pointing to addiction
Oh, this quest can easily turn into Rumple going around and getting all the power he needs and once he gets all those powers, struggling between breaking his curse or keeping the hat to make himself more powerful.
I get that after essentially being a slave, Rumple would want to make sure that it never happened again, I just wish it didn’t involve lying. If it really is to have all the power but be free of his curse, then can’t he explain this to Belle? I actually think she’d be supportive given that she saw what it was like when Rumple was controlled. The more Rumple lies, the bigger hole he digs.
I agree and he really isn’t making matters any better by using other people to cover his tracks too.

ParticipantSo I guess the two questions are: how old is the Dark One power and who was the real original Dark One?

ParticipantI’m not sure if I’d say this is the oldest event, because it largely depends on how long Zoso was alive for and what point of his life did this event occur. The flashback with young Rumple and his dad Malcolm might still be the oldest event that we’ve seen.
I actually think the Malcolm/Rumple thing is the oldest and here’s why. I think at this point in Zoso’s life he’s looking for a way out. He wants to rid himself of the curse. After he fails with the hat, he’s going to start looking for a desperate soul. So I think this is the second oldest.
I agree. But it was nice to hear he wasn’t the First Dark One and there have been many others before Zoso.

ParticipantI struggled with writing my initial post and re-wrote it like three times before posting what I did and this thread ends up on three pages in less than 24 hours. I’m impressed.
I’ll address a few posts first:
It’s hard to write for a ensemble cast to give them all equal screen time, it all comes down to storyline.
I’ve been saying this forever.
I don’t think Adam and Eddy and the other writers look at charts and say, ‘Hey, X character hasn’t really had a lot of screen time this season, so let’s base our story for next season around this character.’ They write where the story takes them and that’s the way it should be. It goes back to that interview A&E gave awhile back that you can’t write a TV show like Once based on polling. It just doesn’t work that way.
No offense to the chart, but I’ve seen them before, and I think stuff like that fuels the animosity toward characters.
I 100% agree with this.
I think this is a very good discussion to have (as long as it stays polite and friendly and doesn’t disintegrate into something nasty).

ParticipantQuestion: Any Once Upon a Time scoop about ‘Rumbelle’? —Serena
Ausiello: Sunday’s reveal that Rumple is after the Sorcerer’s hat and all the magic it contains certainly doesn’t bode well for the couple’s future. “He definitely loves her and wants to be with her, but the hat existed long before she came along and will probably exist long after she’s gone,” muses Robert Carlyle. “This quest is so massive for him. This addiction is huge. [It] drives Rumplestiltskin more than love.”http://tvline.com/2014/10/21/greys-anatomy-spoilers-amelia-addiction-season-11-ask-ausiello/
You know what? I don’t disagree with this at all, especially after watching last Sunday’s episode tonight.
I mean, Rumple in the past basically admitted that he needs more power in order to be freed of the Dark One’s dagger and that could still be the case in the present. He is addicted to magic.
I said in the chat earlier that I think Rumple knows Belle would never abuse the dagger’s magic it holds over him and yet, he refuses to tell her the truth about switching the daggers with a fake one. But you know, I really don’t trust Rumple nowadays, especially when he lies to Belle’s face and manipulates people around him more blatantly to cover his tracks. He could still want to use the hat to somehow override the power of the dagger, or just to simply gain more power in general.
But I definitely agree he loves power more than Belle, because otherwise he would have told her the truth episodes ago.

ParticipantI finally saw the episode. It was good. I wish there was more on the date. I would have liked to have known what they talked about on the date. I wanted to see all that awkwardness if there was any. Did Emma ask about Milah, or anything about his past, did she ask about Liam? I can see Emma wanting to know more about him than wanting to talk about herself.
But good episode.
Rumple is such a — jerk is being too polite. Hook blackmailed Rumple but what he’s doing now to Hook is far worse. Rumple is basically playing mind games with Hook and seriously, that is messed up. There really isn’t anything about Rumple’s character at this point that I feel sorry for. I mean, how many times is going to swap the knife before he gets caught? If he loses Belle, then so be it. Seriously. Belle deserves much better than Rumple, who seems to love power more than her. That is not the kind of man she deserves.
I like how Emma put Hook first on the date. She could have run off after Will but she turned around and stayed and explained to him that it’s not important, that Hook is more important than some thief that basically has no escape out of town. Emma made sure he understood that and at the sheriff’s station that she truly enjoyed the date and had a good time regardless of that little run in. And I loved hearing the Captain Swan theme, especially a different variation of it. It’s still very beautiful.

Participant@motormouthcrazy the teen was a young Emma, Snow Queen was her guardian, trying to force her to use/discover powers.

ParticipantI’ve seen this point made on tumblr, where if you love this character on Once, you must hate the other guy. While that might be true for some, I think you can like two opposing characters even though there’s reasons to dislike one over the other.
At one point, I loved Rumple and Hook. Rumple was my first favorite on this show, but I also sympathized with Hook when he first appeared. I still love Hook (especially his current story arc), but I can’t find any sympathy for Rumple this season. His actions frustrate me to no end. His attitude in general is just down right disturbing.
I do think, ultimately whether you love Hook or hate him, comes down to a couple of things: his actions (where the character started), who he’s with currently (Emma) and fan’s personal preference.
Personal preference is very important. Not everyone has the same background and feels the same way about the same character. Some people will naturally gravitate towards certain characters, feel for what they’re going through and not feel something else for a different character.

ParticipantI have a theory Marian will be unfrozen by true love’s kiss from Roland. Roland’s likely too young to understand how true love’s kiss works, but I can see him, thinking if his mommy does die this time, he’d at least want to kiss her goodbye. And he loves her despite not knowing her very long.
I can’t think of the idea that Marian has a different true love out there because I have no idea who that would be. It’s not Robin, that is for sure.
Plus, you know, we’ve seen true love’s kiss can still work without having your heart in your body.

ParticipantI think it’s likely that someone is going to get a piece of glass magically stuck inside their heart. Top contenders right now: Rumple, Emma, Regina.
I think it’ll be Emma.
