ParticipantAlso, with the Dark Curse, crossing the border meant a memory wipe of some kind. Not this time. This time you turn into a tree, indicating a very different kind of spell.
Not necessary. Losing your memory while crossing the town border only applied to after the curse broke in Season 2. During the days of the curse in Season 1, something bad would happen to you before you were even able to cross the border. When the 2nd Dark Curse happened, crossing the town border instead would get you dragged into the woods by flying monkeys. You would then get bitten, and eventually transform into a flying monkey yourself. After Zelena was defeated, Elsa created an Ice Wall that prevented anybody from exiting the town. After Ingrid was defeated, some of Ingrid’s magic remained. The remaining magic meant that crossing the border would prevent you from crossing back over, but you would retain your memory. So it’s clear to see that Storybrooke always creates some sort of consequence for crossing the town line, possibly as a built-in measure to keep the magic and mystery of Storybrooke contained to the town itself.
Fair enough.
How about just landing in SB rather than it being built?
The only thing I can of that would counter this is that SB was already there because only the diner was taken to FTL via the portal, and thus the DC would put back what was there, plus dump the others all over the place.
It would be nice if it wasn’t the dark curse, I do feel that we need a refreshing change and it would be a nice twist.
Still think that the dreamcatchers hold our hero’s memories, though.

ParticipantParticipant I can’t see it going beyond season 5, but if there is to be a season 6, it would be nice to see -Science vs magic picked up again -Reasons why our land is ”without magic” or has residual magic that people have forgotten about -Reasons why RH and EQ can exist together in the same world at the same time, (and be born at roughly the same time) even though they were ”known about” by the people of LWM at different points in our history -Reasons why we the people of the LWM know about these characters, and at different points in our history.
For the selected above questions I offered this theory elsewhere that I think really works:
THEORY: The Author records and spreads the stories to generate belief. Magic runs on belief. Magical realms run on magic. If belief is gone those worlds will cease to exist. Its like the “God Needs Prayers” trope. Something similar happened in the Kingdom Keepers book series about the kids at Disney world who had to fight the Disney villains. Every child making wishes and believing every night at Disney world actually brought the characters to life. If its the same thing in OUAT, if they don’t tell the stories people will not believe in magic and these worlds will never be. Merlin is a prophet. And so was Rump. And we know the future is never truly what it seems. That explains a lot. Merlin foretold things of the future for certain stories and told them in advance to certain people who passed the stories down. The details were not exact and of course they got changed a lot too as they were passed down but eventually the stories came true as he foretold. The Author records the true events as they occur.
I think its a sound theory.
Yes, I have a similar theory that I came up with during the summer break between season 2 and 3, inspired by 1) the Neverending Story and 2) Wendy telling stories to the Lost Boys in the original Peter Pan and 3) Sophie’s World
I would like the writers to actually provide answers to my questions, however. I don’t want to just theorize, and it would make a great short season 6 😉

-Reul Ghorm, the original magic?
-How/why these magical realms were created (which could be tied to answering the last two).
…It would be great if season 6 was existential, and and got right down to the core concepts of the show …..oooh and…..
-Perhaps a restoration or addition of magic to our world.
-Everybody going on a big fat world tour before heading back to a modernized FTL.

ParticipantOh that infinite bottle of sand.
I wonder if there is enough to sprinkle over the tree to get Merlin out of it, at least temporarily (seeing as this dust only gives the illusion of broken things being fixed?).
Or would that be too easy?

ParticipantMaybe they cast an unknown because
-the original DO will be seen only briefly in human form and/or
-he will end up wearing a ton of prosthetics anyway a la Voldermort.

ParticipantAs I said on the likes/dislikes thread, Merida does not seem to be the obvious choice to make Rumple brave. Threatening to kill Belle might, though (and where was she btw?).
And doesn’t giving lip back to the Dark One and resisting her already make him brave?
My hope is that the next episode will give a satisfactory explanation as to why Merida would be a better option (other than the play on her movie title).

ParticipantWriting this without reading the others. I will go back and read them afterwards.
I was wrong about Guinevere being Morgana or Nimue. I still think Arthur knows exactly what is going on and has not lost his memories in present day SB.
LIKES
-Snow and Charming plot to catch Arthur in the act. It was nice to see them have something to do. Though I would like to see some character development for these two, too.
-Henry/Violet
-That the gauntlet has an explanation/use, though I wasn’t expecting one because I don’t see it as important as filling up the larger plotholes, continuity errors, and dropped threads.
-The place where the dagger was protected held some significance -Snow had her vision in there-and it wasn’t just some random jungle room.
-Arthur having a backstory that didn’t involve child abuse, it was something different-bullying. Bullying has the same effect on the brain as child abuse, so it was a realistic reason for present day Arthur to feel the need to prove himself to himself and to others, and resort to shady means to do so. Sometimes the bullied becomes the bully, even when it came from other children.
Edit: I also think we were meant to think that the bullying was continual, it wasn’t a one off incident, given the state that Arthur is in now.
DISLIKES
-Arthur using the magic sand stuff to control Guienevre.
-Not enough Regina.
-I am surprised that Emma’s way to make Rumple brave did not involve threatening to kill Belle. This would have been a more obvious choice than Merida.
-Confusion over the black goo. Is it just spare goo to protect the dagger? I thought the goo represented the Dark One darkness, and it was all inside Rumple?
-I thought it was a bit slow. Maybe it was the lack of Regina? Anyway, I usually like slow episodes that allow character development for the main characters, but seeing as their wasn’t any other than Arthur’s backstory, I was a tad bored.
8/10

ParticipantIf Emma goes to the Underworld, then I hope 5B won’t be about the others going to save her. That’s what this half of the season was supposed to be. It’d be repetition.
I guess they want to do a repeat of them going of the NL, except this time it will be the Underworld.
If one or both of Henry’s mothers end up in the Underworld, would that mean that Rumple or Henry would be the final savior/hero?

ParticipantOut of all the characters in folktales and mythology, Morgana le Fey is the one I wanted to see the most since this TV show began. I cannot pretend I am not deeply disappointed. I would not be satisfied even with elements of Morgana intergrated into other characters, unless Nimue/Guinevere goes by another name, Morgana, as well.
I am glad that we will get to see RH’s dark side. However I think waiting until 5B to do it was a big mistake and may have p***sed off enough fans for them to stop watching because this is one of may aspects (the lack of a decently dark past) that has made Outlaw Queen seem implausable (in addition to the whole Regina locking up Marian etc). ”Wait and see” just doesn’t cut it with this generation, and A&E have a track record of plot holes, continuinity errors and fundamental questions going unanswered.

ParticipantI don’t think that he will be alive for much longer, though. Does anyone else think that either Arthur or Guinivere cast the curse using Lancelot’s heart? (probably Guinevere?)
Yeah that’s where I’m leaning as well.
I didn’t realize that you had come up with this idea already. I don’t usually have time to read many of the threads and posts. Good to see that others are thinking along the same lines, though!
