ParticipantI noticed several allusions to the Holy Grail in this episode. The box that the Sorcerer’s Hat is in even looks a little bit like a chalice. I think in the Once universe, the Hat is the holy grail for all intents and purposes.
I also had a thought about the difference between wizards and Sorcerers. We’ve heard several times that Rumple is the most powerful wizard in all the lands. I’m thinking there are different classes of magical beings, and Wizards are ranked below Sorcerers in this class system, which is why the Sorcerer is potentially more powerful than Rumple, a Wizard.
What I’m most curious about is where is the Sorcerer currently?
Part of me thinks he’s been trapped in the hat, possibly by the apprentice. BUT, since there is now a big abandoned mansion (where Rumple found the Hat) in Storybrooke, I think the mansion’s new presence could hint that the Sorcerer is actually in Storybrooke, which also leads me to believe he could’ve had a hand in writing the book.
Even if the Sorcerer had nothing to do with the book, him having a mansion in storybrooke would suggest he’s there… possibly.

ParticipantShe’s in Wonderland. Will was brought to Storybrooke by the second curse, as he was by the original one. Now he’s looking for a way back. …That would be the simplest explanation, but they’ve probably come up with something way grander.
I hope this is the answer. Dr. Whale wasn’t in the Enchanted Forest when Regina cast the first curse, but he was still brought to Storybrooke. We’ve heard that the DC affected all the lands, so it would be a stretch for Snow’s curse to bring the Knave from Wonderland.

ParticipantShe crossed the town border. She followed Emma in S3b.
I can get on board with this, but there’s still more to their connection. Snow Queen would’ve had to have known Emma before S3B.

ParticipantMy only thought is that the Snow Queen must have a method of magic that allows her to travel between the lands. Right now, my best guest is that she can materialize into a blizzard and then fall into another land and rebuild herself from the snowflakes.
The big problems with this theory is that she would’ve had to use this ability to travel to a land without magic, but that would be impossible if she was traveling by magical means.
It’s not likely that Rumple would’ve helped the Snow Queen travel to a land without magic since he himself could not do so without the dark curse. If she was a victim of the DC, I suppose its possible that her magic neutralized some of the effects of the Dark Curse, allowing her to keep her memories and travel outside of storybrooke. However, Rumple would’ve had to be involved somehow. Snow Queen would’ve only known about Emma because of Rumple – I think we can read that much into their encounter at the end of 4×03. Since Rumple lived without his memories for those 28 years, Snow Queen’s business with Emma had to have been settled before the dark Curse struck the Enchanted Forest.

ParticipantI think the Ice Queen’s sister, Anna and Elsa’s mother, definitely trapped the Ice Queen in the urn.
IQ told Elsa that Anna trapped her in the urn because she wants Elsa to feel that same pain that most likely pushed the IQ into becoming a villain.
IQ wants something from Elsa, and she possibly wanted it from Emma once too.

ParticipantSo why was Pan more poweful than Rumpel? Was it because of some kind of Neverland magical belief thing? Or because Rump was sort of unwilling to kill his father?
Also, I always kinda thought Pan’s power was fueled by Rumple’s belief, which was why Rumple had to kill Pan the way he did. Rumple had to die too because he was the one who named Peter Pan, thus, first believing in him.

ParticipantI actually didn’t like the scene between Henry and Rumple, and that’s not just because Neal wasn’t mention once, but that is part of it.
Henry’s motivation for coming to see Rumple seemed too out of character for Henry. Wanting his fake memories back? What? I get that he was made at his mom and hurting. He took it personally that Regina didn’t want to see him. He’s young, he’s allowed to do that – make something about him that’s not really about him. Kids can be melodramatic.
But wanting to forget Regina? That makes no sense. Through every situation, Henry has held on to hope more so than any other character. For him to suddenly lose hope like that felt out of character to me. In season 1, Henry didn’t just forget about Emma when she put up her walls. I was a little insulted (for Regina) that Henry would’ve so easily forgotten her if Rumple had been willing to help out with the magic.

ParticipantWELL if that’s the case… Merlin’s role in Arthurian legend traditionally ends with him getting trapped inside a cave/tree/rock and often has his magic stolen in the process. Merlin’s in the hat. Not sure how the hat will tie into THIS arc (like others have suggested, it’ll probably be the ultimate fate of the Snow Queen) but I’d bet a whole lot of cookies he’s knocking around in there somewhere. It’s the only thing this made me think of, honestly, really curious to see where they’re going with the hat.
I didn’t know that about Merlin. Now I’m hoping he is in the hat.
PanTheMan
ParticipantThe hat steals magic. I have no idea what that means for this arc. Are they going to put the hat on The Snow Queen and suck her magic away? Also, the whole person goes in: well that will be entertaining…
Since we have characters like Elsa and Emma, who both are at odds with their magic and wish they didn’t have it, I’m worried what this hat could mean for them. I wouldn’t want to see either one of them lose their magic, or be trapped in a hat. Most likely, the hat will the the Snow Queen’s fate. The writer in me knows our heroes will be fine. I hope.
See, I can’t see them taking away Emma’s magic again. They did that once and then she got it back when she realized where home was…bit repetitive.
I agree. However, the device of being sucked into a prop, has also been done in Once. My first thought was Pandora’s Box. Although, the hat sounds a little more final than Pandora’s box.
PanTheMan
ParticipantDoes this mean that the Sorcerer himself wasn’t at all magical, he’s just some guy who used the powers of others that had been stored in the hat?
I think the Sorcerer must be magic because I think he/she would’ve created the hat with their magic. But I could totally be wrong. I like your idea Phee. Makes me think of the Wizard of Oz in Once, since he didn’t really have magic either.
