ParticipantI think episode 4 of Gotham will do as well as the first 3 because people will be curious to see what direction the season is going to go after the stupid decision to kill off Jerome. However, I think episode 5 will be the real indicator of interest in the season whether it will start to drop or remain steady.

My thoughts on that second sneak peek: I don’t like how Hook is treating Dark One Emma. Perhaps it is being written like that to play in with Belle’s line “It’s far easier to hate a dark one than it is to love one” but it just seems odd and a little OOC that he would spend 3 seasons chasing after Emma and that, now that she’s the dark one, he wants nothing to do with her. I feel quite confident predicting that until Hook gets over his issues with Emma being the dark one, then a CS TLK won’t work. Remember Belle’s line about Rumple in 315 “I love him, all of him, even the parts that belong to the darkness”. Until Hook can learn to love ALL the parts of Emma including the darkness, then no amount of kissing is going to break the Dark one curse.
The thing I find almost unsettling about the clip is that Hook refuses Emma’s offer of talking and having lunch “like old times” when she’s dressed in her Dark one outfit, yet he’s more accepting of the offer when she’s wearing her Sandra dee dress. Not only that but Emma’s body language when she’s apologising before making the offer, it just doesn’t sit right. It’s like she’s being made to apologise because she’s not the woman Hook wants her to be and she doesn’t want to be rejected by him so she’s being quite submissive.
Adding this part in this thread because I’m less likely to be yelled at here: I find that scene of Emma and Hook to have an undertone of a domestic abuse vibe about it. Because Emma isn’t the woman Hook wants her to be, Emma feels like she has to apologise to him. She wants to talk and have lunch with him “like old times” but he’s not interested. It’s only when she puts on her Sandra dee form (which a lot of us ages ago said didn’t suit the Emma Swan we met in season 1,2 or 3A) that Hook allows her to have lunch with him. It’s like he’s trying to diminish her sense of self-esteem.
His concern doesn’t seem to be about helping Emma, he dislikes that Emma isn’t the woman he wants her to be. I’ve never been the biggest fan of CS but accepted that it was happening and that we’d be subjected to it until the end of the series. But this scene right here, it’s not right. It is so wrong on so many levels. This isn’t just about Hook wanting to free Emma from the dark one curse, this is Hook rejecting Emma just because there’s something “wrong” with her. That is not true love at all. That is not even love.

ParticipantOh dear, does anyone recall that tv show where the rugrats babies grew up? *going down memory lane*
i’m old and want old tv backI remember that. Also the wild Thornberries, Pocket Dragons, Pinky and the Brain, Batman: the animated series, UBOS, X-Men Evolution, and the show whose them tune still sends shivers of excitement down my spine, X-Men: The animated series.
The 90s/early 2000s, when children’s TV was still good.

ParticipantMaybe it’s Belle? Which would be interesting to see how DO Rumple reacts. Remember how Belle said she loves ALL of Rumple, including the darkness (or whatever that line was), plus if TLK is to work on the dark one, then surely the darkness must be involved in the TLK as well?

ParticipantCameron Monaghan did an interview with TV Guide which seems to confirm Jerome’s death.
http://www.tvguide.com/news/gotham-postmortem-cameron-monaghan-the-last-laugh/
“Theo becomes kind of this twisted father figure character to Jerome in a certain way and it’s a really nice reflection to have Jerome murder his father and then his father figure to murder him within the same episode,” Monaghan says, noting that Theo ultimately realized that his goals could be better achieved without Jerome as a wild card.
“Jerome is extremely dangerous and extremely volatile,” Monaghan says. “I think one of the defining factors of him is that he doesn’t take a step back and because of that, he’s extremely unpredictable. I think Theo had an awareness of that and utilized it to his advantage. But he knew that if he kept him around for any longer, his own self would probably be in jeopardy as well. So, he had to take out the free radical in the situation.”
🙁
The writers have shot themselves in the foot good and proper. No matter who is revealed to be the “actual” Joker down the road, they’ll always just be known as a copycat of Jerome.
Gotham is basically doing what Once does, show us one thing but tell us the opposite. Jerome was shown to clearly be the Joker in all but name but the show is telling us that he isn’t. The show could’ve sent Jerome back to Arkham and left the audience with a *nudge nudge wink wink* in regards to whether or not Jerome is the actual Joker.
Here’s a question: If the writers did decide to bring Jerome back despite his death (the same could be applied for any dead favourite character on any show), but the way it was written was really plot devicey (ie It was all a set up, Jerome wasn’t really dead at all, etc) Would you accept it just to have your favourite character back on screen and involved in storylines again?

ParticipantPersonally I’d have been fine with it if they’d recaptured him and thrown him back in Arkham, leaving us to believe that Jerome stews away in there and does indeed become Joker some day. But I know that many comic fans straight up hated the idea of Joker being given an origin story, because a big point of the character is that he doesn’t have an origin story, he just IS. Even if people enjoyed Cameron’s performance as Jerome, they would still not love the aspect of it that was giving Joker an origin story.
I disagree. Gotham is so AUish at times, I think it would’ve worked to have THIS Joker have an origin. Even if they never called Jerome the Joker, he was clearly the Joker. In the comics, the Joker must’ve come from somewhere, we just don’t know where exactly. If Gotham is indeed written as an AU, with things suggesting that it is instead of following continuity, then the writers have more freedom to play around. You’ve got your unchangeable events eg Wayne murders and Bruce becomes Batman, but HOW you get from point A to point B is up to interpretation. They could’ve had Jerome be the actual Joker with an origin and still had the Joker/Batman dynamic. Plus whose to say that over the years, stories about Jerome wouldn’t have gotten more outlandish and distorted until the point that the fact couldn’t be separated from the fiction. The audience might know where Jerome came from but the other characters wouldn’t.
So the way they did it, they got to play with a Joker-esque character, they got to have that element of crazy in the show’s universe, (and seriously a show about Gotham would have felt incomplete if they never touched on Joker at all), but in the end, we still don’t know who Joker really is, he’s still a mythical enigma, as he’s always been. It’s like they got the best of both worlds IMO.
We know he’s someone who will be inspired by Jerome, but he’ll be smarter, he’ll make sure he’s always in charge, so no one gets the better of him, the way Theo got Jerome, (and yes it was obviously a part of Theo’s plan all along to kill Jerome, setting him up to be a vicious threat, then taking him out in a very public way, thus endearing himself to the people of Gotham, making it easier for him to take the whole place over). So as scary, and unhinged, and bold, and crafty as Jerome was, we’re left with the knowledge that someone out there will be next level, someone out there will some day be WORSE. And I’m sure we’ll never actually see that person, but knowing they’re lurking out there somewhere makes the idea of him plenty foreboding, (it’s often just the idea of something you can’t see that’s scarier than seeing the actual thing).
I disagree. The Joker has always prided himself on being original, the one and only, he gets annoyed if someone tries to steal his act. So for the “real” Joker to copy-cat someone else’s act is an insult to the character.
On the other hand, however, it’s very possible that perhaps Jerome WAS the Joker. This show killed off Maroni who was responsible for turning Harvey Dent into Two Face before he could turn Harvey Dent into Two Face. That screws with comic continuity right there. I don’t think anything will become of the mad people inspired by Jerome, the show has other stories to tell.

ParticipantOkay, one more passing thought on Hook. But I need to discuss his selfishness. It’s rather selfish of the Pirate to waltz into Rumple’s shop and demand to know things from Belle, no? I mean, he’s curious about why TLK wouldn’t work, I understand that and in this case going to Belle is a natural idea. But…but…he doesn’t even inquire after Rumple or how Belle is doing. Instead he insults the love of Belle’s life to her face (bloody crocodile) and doesn’t even ask how she’s coping all while her *husband* is laying there at death’s door! It’s all about him and his needs and his desires and his agenda. It makes their drinking at Granny’s together hollow and not resonate because once again, it’s about Hook’s man pain but at no point does he turn to her and inquire after how she’s doing.
I guess I should be fair that no one in SB, apart from Grumpy at the ball, is asking after Belle, but no one is seeking her out either.
I admit when I was watching it, I didn’t notice it, but now that you mention it, you are absolutely right. I’m not against a friendship between Hook and Belle, but I do think that Hook needs to show some compassion and regret over his actions towards Belle rather than it just being ignored and forgotten. At the moment the friendship seems one side in Hook’s favour with Belle being forgiving yet Hook has done nothing to earn that forgiveness.
